Castello Scaligero - Soave (Verona - Italy)-[EN]-[IT]

The castle of Soave is a military building constructed in the Middle Ages and represents one of the best examples of a castle structure in the Veneto region (northern Italy). The town in which it is located is Soave, an Italian municipality of 7000 inhabitants. Its foundation is attributed to the Sambonifacio counts, who were the rightful owners of the castle until the early 1200s.

Il castello di Soave è un edificio militare costruito nel Medioevo e rappresenta uno dei migliori esempi di struttura castellana della regione Veneto (regione del Nord Italia). Il paese in cui si trova è proprio Soave, un comune italiano di 7000 abitanti. La sua fondazione è attribuita ai conti Sambonifacio i quali furono i legittimi proprietari del castello fino ai primi anni del 1200.

This castle belonged to Verona's best-known, historical family, the Della Scala. In fact, this castle is also identified as the Della Scala castle of Soave. The Della Scala, also known as the Scaligeri, were a dynasty that ruled the city and the lands of Verona for more than 100 years, exactly from 1262 to 1387.
This castle marked the history of the town in the province of Verona.

Questo castello appartenne alla famiglia più conosciuta di Verona, una famiglia storica, i Della Scala. Questo castello viene infatti identificato anche come il castello scaligero di Soave. I Della Scala, conosciuti anche come gli Scaligeri, furono una dinastia che governarono la città e le terre di Verona per più di 100 anni, esattamente dal 1262 al 1387.
Questo castello ha segnato la storia della cittadina della provincia di Verona.

Once inside the walls, it is impossible not to imagine what it was like to live 700 years ago inside this castle. When one then finds oneself inside, one is immediately reminded of what life could have been like here so many years ago, in medieval times.

Una volta entrati dentro le mura è impossibile non immaginare come si poteva vivere 700 anni fa all’interno di questo castello. Quando ci si trova poi all’interno dell’abitato viene subito in mente a come poteva essere la vita qui tantissimi anni fa, al tempo del medioevo.

A great deal of activity has taken place around this castle over the years. It is a typical military artefact and the history of this castle is a mixture of feudal disputes, factional struggles and barbarian invasions.

Attorno a questo castello negli anni si sono susseguite tantissime attività. Esso è un tipico manufatto militare e la storia di questo castello è un insieme di contese feudatarie, lotte tra fazioni e invasioni barbariche.

Historians have tried to dig deep into the past of this castle and it seems that this fortified construction dates back to the early 10th century. Reports and information found say that this castle was built on the initiative of Berengar I, King of Italy. Berengar I was Marquis of Friuli and King of Italy and died in Verona in 924. The importance of this structure, however, grew disproportionately when it was conquered by the Scaligeri. It was Cansignorio della Scala, lord of Verona, who restored and strengthened it between 1369 and 1375.

Gli storici hanno provato a scavare a fondo nel passato di questo castello e sembra che questa opera fortificata risalga agli inizi del X secolo. Le notizie e le informazioni trovate dicono che questo castello è stato costruito per iniziativa di Berengario I Re d’Italia. Berengario I fu marchese del Friuli e Re d’Italia, morì proprio a Verona nel 924. L’importanza di questa struttura però crebbe a dismisura quando fu conquistato dagli scaligeri. Fu Cansignorio della Scala, signore di Verona, che lo restauró e lo rafforzó tra il 1369 e il 1375.

The castle was built on Mount Tenda and allowed it to dominate the plain below. It consists of a keep (tower, common in medieval castles) and three courtyards.

Il castello fu costruito sul monte Tenda e permetteva di dominare la pianura sottostante. È composto da un mastio (torre, comune nei castelli medievali) e tre cortili.

Once inside the walls, one notices a beautiful staircase leading to the Captain's House. This was a medieval dwelling that housed the garrison. A garrison is a military unit usually placed to defend a palace or castle.

Una volta all’interno delle mura si nota una bella scala che porta alla Casa del Capitano. Questa era un’abitazione medievale che ospitava la guarnigione di presidio. La guarnigione è un’unità militare solitamente poste a difesa di un palazzo o di un castello.

The main entrance has a drawbridge and is protected by the tower of San Giorgio, so called because there is a statue of the saint on the tower.
Crossing the drawbridge, one enters the first courtyard and is immediately immersed in this medieval work that, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful castles in northern Italy.

L’ingresso principale è munito di ponte levatoio ed è protetto dalla torre di San Giorgio, così chiamata perché proprio sulla torre è posta una statua del Santo.
Oltrepassando il ponte levatoio si entra nel primo cortile e ci si trova subito immersi in quest’opera medievale che, secondo me, è uno tra i castelli più belli del Nord Italia.
