The basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe is an early Christian basilica located in Ravenna, built in the first half of the 6th century. This basilica was consecrated in 549 and was dedicated to Saint Apollinare, the first bishop of Ravenna.

La basilica di Sant’Apollinare in Classe ha un’architettura antica frutto dei continui cambiamenti culturali che sono avvenuti nello storico passato della città di Ravenna.

The name Apollinare comes from Apollinare of Ravenna who was a Roman bishop who lived between the 1st and 2nd centuries. He died in Classe. Classe is a district of the municipality of Ravenna and it is there that the Basilica was built. It is said that the Basilica was built on the site of Apollinare's martyrdom.
Il nome Apollinare deriva da Apollinare di Ravenna il quale è stato un vescovo romano vissuto tra il I secolo e il II secolo. Egli morì a Classe. Classe è una frazione del comune di Ravenna ed è proprio lì che è stata costruita la Basilica. Si narra che la Basilica sia nata nel luogo del martirio di Apollinare.

This basilica is a UNESCO-protected property and has been declared a World Heritage Site among the Historic Early Christian Monuments.

The basilica has three naves and these are bordered by columns with marble shafts
La basilica è a tre navate e queste sono delimitate l’una dall’altra da colonne con fusti di marmo

Inside the basilica, there are several sarcophagi arranged along the walls. Some of these appear to date from the 5th to the 8th century, so they are more than 1,000 years old.
All’interno della basilica ci sono diversi sarcofagi disposti lungo i muri. Sembra che alcuni di questi siano databili dal V all'VIII secolo, quindi hanno più di 1000 anni.

The wall mosaics of the basilica are, in my opinion, the most valuable feature of the interior of this building. In the decoration of the apsidal basin is the figure of Apollinaris placed in the centre. This decoration dates back to around the middle of the 6th century.

One of the most characteristic external features of the basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe is the circular bell tower, dating from the 10th century and thirty-seven metres high.
Uno dei tratti esterni più caratteristici della basilica di Sant'Apollinare in Classe è il campanile circolare, databile al X secolo e alto trentasette metri.

Devo ammettere che essere dentro a questa basilica costruita prima degli anni 1000 fa senso. I mosaici sono impressionanti. Direi che è uno dei luoghi storici italiani da visitare.
Secondo quanto ho letto è una forma di omaggio quindi, è un'architettura magnifica, le colonne, la cupola, anche le scale, è una bellissima basilica
È una chiesa costruita nel 550 dopo Cristo, Una testimonianza importante. Infatti è stata dichiarata patrimonio dell’umanità dall’UNESCO
Avevo sempre sentito parlare di questa basilica ma è la prima volta che la vedo.
E' un monumento splendido ed unico nel suo genere.
