Quito at night, a stroll through La Ronda and the Panecillo viewpoint - The Ecuador diary 🌙 ✨ Quito de noche, un paseo por La Ronda y el mirador del Panecillo - El diario de Ecuador

After an intense morning and afternoon on my first day in Ecuador in the streets of Quito's historic center, the evening was also quite entertaining. Vero, the Argentine girl who was staying at the same hostel as me and with whom I went out, had an Ecuadorian friend she was meeting at around 9:00 pm and invited me to go with them. These opportunities are not to be missed, so I accepted.

Después de una intensa mañana y tarde en mi primer día en Ecuador, recorriendo las calles del centro histórico de Quito, la noche también fue bastante entretenida. Vero, la chica argentina que se estaba hospedando en el mismo hostal que yo y con quien salí a pasear, tenía una amiga ecuatoriana con la que se iba a encontrar como a las 9:00 pm y me invitó a ir con ellas. Estas oportunidades no hay que perderlas, así que acepté.

Susan, Vero's friend, arrived in her car to pick us up and told us that we would first go to La Ronda Street. We visited it in the morning and even had lunch there, but at night it takes on a whole new life, it has a different atmosphere, and that's what Susan wanted us to experience.

Susan, la amiga de Vero, llegó en su carro a buscarnos y nos dijo que primero iríamos a la calle La Ronda. Nosotras la visitamos en la mañana e incluso almorzamos por allí, pero de noche cobra otra vida, tiene otro ambiente, y eso es lo que Susan quería que experimentáramos.

And indeed it was. La Ronda resembled a large street party, with live music, dancing, cultural events, and all the shops and restaurants inviting tourists to come in and sample what they had to offer.

Y efectivamente era así. La Ronda parecía una gran fiesta callejera, con música en vivo, bailes, manifestaciones culturales y todas las tiendas y restaurantes invitando a los turistas a entrar y probar lo que ofrecían.

As I was walking along and looking at all this, I tripped over something. I bent down to look and it was a card, a 3 of diamonds. I thought it was curious event and picked up the card. I don't know anything about tarot and its meanings, but later I looked it up and found that this card symbolizes “growth and expansion in different aspects of life.” Interesting...

Mientras iba caminando y viendo todo esto, tropecé con algo. Me agaché para ver y era una carta, un 3 de rombos. Me pareció un suceso curioso y me llevé la carta. No sé nada del tarot y sus significados, pero luego investigué y esta carta dicen que simboliza “el crecimiento y la expansión en diferentes aspectos de la vida”. Interesante...

We saw several traditional things here, such as aguas locas, which are drinks made with juices or infusions and mixed with alcohol; or choclos, corn prepared in different ways. Also the empanadas de viento (wind empanadas), huge, fried, and crispy; and the famous canelazo, a hot alcoholic drink made with cane rum, lulo or naranjilla fruit, cloves, and cinnamon, which is consumed to combat the cold of the Andes.

Aquí vimos varias cosas tradicionales, como las aguas locas, que son bebidas elaboradas con jugos o infusiones y mezcladas con alcohol; o los choclos, maíz preparado de diferentes maneras. También las empanadas de viento, enormes, fritas y crujientes; y el famoso canelazo, una bebida alcohólica caliente elaborada con ron de caña, lulo o naranjilla, clavo y canela, que se consume para combatir el frío de los Andes.

And, of course, we also encounter individuals who work independently on this tourist street, either selling items to tourists or entertaining them with some kind of performance.

Y por supuesto, también nos encontramos con personas que trabajan de forma independiente en esta calle turística, ya sea vendiendo artículos a los turistas o entreteniéndolos con algún tipo de actuación.

One of them caught everyone's attention because of who was with him. This man, whom you will see below, sold candy alongside his little rabbit named Esperancita, and if you bought something from him, he would give you some fresh herbs to feed his friend.

Uno de ellos llamaba la atención de todo el mundo por quien lo acompañaba. Este señor que verán a continuación, vendía chucherías junto a su coneja llamada Esperancita, y si le comprabas algo, te daba unas hierbas frescas para que alimentaras a su amiga.

We spent about an hour and a half at La Ronda, enjoying the atmosphere and trying some things, and then Susan took us to another iconic place in Quito.

Estuvimos más o menos una hora y media en La Ronda, disfrutando del ambiente y probando algunas cosas, y luego Susan nos llevó a otro lugar emblemático de Quito.

Then we headed to a small hill near the historic center, El Panecillo.

Luego nos dirigimos a una pequeña colina cerca del casco histórico, El Panecillo.

From this natural viewpoint, you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city.

Desde este mirador natural, se puede disfrutar de una hermosa vista panorámica de la ciudad.

And there at the summit, 3,000 meters above sea level, stands a giant sculpture of the Virgin of Quito, created in 1975 by Spanish artist Agustín de la Herrán Matorras.

Y allí en la cima, a 3.000 metros sobre el nivel del mar, se encuentra una escultura gigante de la Virgen de Quito, creada en 1975 por el español Agustín de la Herrán Matorras.

This 41-meter-high figure is based on the 18th-century work of Bernardo de Legarda, one of the greatest exponents of the Quito School, and is known as the Virgin of Legarda or Apocalyptic Virgin because it depicts the Virgin Mary as described in the Apocalypse: a woman with a crown, angel wings, and a chain binding the serpent beneath her feet, representing the beast.

Esta figura de 41 metros de altura está basada en la obra del siglo XVIII de Bernardo de Legarda, uno de los máximos exponentes de la Escuela de Quito, y se la conoce como Virgen de Legarda o Virgen Apocalíptica porque representa a la Virgen María tal como aparece descrita en el Apocalipsis: una mujer con una corona, alas de ángel y una cadena que ata a la serpiente bajo sus pies, que representa a la bestia.

You can enter the monument and climb a little higher, to 3,027 meters above sea level, but we preferred to continue enjoying the night view from outside and the cold weather.

Se puede entrar al monumento y elevarse un poco más, a 3.027 metros sobre el nivel del mar, pero nosotras preferimos seguir disfrutando de la vista nocturna desde afuera y del frío que estaba haciendo.

There were also several food and canelazo stands nearby, and of course we went over to have one. It tastes really good, and I didn't find it very strong in terms of alcohol content.

En los alrededores había además varios puestos de comida y de canelazo, y por supuesto que nos acercamos a tomarnos uno. Su sabor es muy bueno, y no me pareció muy fuerte en cuanto a grados de alcohol.
