Christmas in the city of Viana do Castelo

Today, we're revisiting the theme of Christmas in the city of Viana do Castelo.
The atmosphere felt during the holiday season is truly magical. We had the opportunity to visit the city center during this special time of the year and were greeted by a combination of twinkling lights and aromas that culminate in a contagious sense of joy.

Viana do Castelo's historic center was adorned with Christmas decorations, and the streets were filled with colorful lights, decorated trees, and a truly festive atmosphere. The highlight of the stroll was the Christmas market, which stretched along the main streets. Stalls adorned with festive ornaments, local crafts, culinary delights, and handmade gifts delighted both young and old alike.
The Town Hall is located in Praça da República and here we can also find the Costume Museum installed in the Estado Novo Building. In this museum, the vast collection of one of Viana do Castelo's greatest treasures is on display, including colorful pieces of typical costume and various pieces of delicate filigree jewelry, an internationally recognized brand.
In that square we can also find the Misericórdia building, the elegant 16th century fountain that stands out in the center right in front of the Antigos Paços do Concelho building, and in one of the parallel streets we come across the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maior, which holds of a very bold medieval architecture.

At the former Town Hall, we found a nativity scene exhibition (Fifth Edition), all crafted by artisans from Viana using various materials such as bottle caps, fabric, clay, paper, and even metal.
The streets were bustling with people, enjoying the welcoming atmosphere. The sound of Christmas music echoed through the streets, and we could hear children's laughter and their joyful antics. Families explored the stalls, children admired the decorations, and many queued up to take pictures at Santa's house.

Among the activities offered, the 10th São Silvestre race on the eve of Christmas Eve is an event that generates a lot of excitement. Also, the seventh São Silvestre Kids race took place, where, as the name suggests, the little ones were not left out. The enthusiasm of the participants and the support of the public and family members created an atmosphere of celebration and healthy competition. The energy was contagious!
We decided to visit Café Natário, a place famous for its specialty: the renowned Berlin balls. It was almost a personal obligation to savor these cream-filled delights. Natário is a must-stop for locals and visitors, offering not only the iconic Berlin balls but also a wide selection of traditional Portuguese pastries.

Seated at one of the outdoor tables, we savored every bite of the Berlin balls while observing the hustle and bustle before the race began.
As the night fell, the Christmas lights became even more beautiful, transforming the scenery. The festive atmosphere continued to envelop the city, inviting walks and a hot chocolate at one of the beautiful terraces overlooking the Lima River.

The visit to the center of Viana do Castelo during the Christmas season was truly charming. From the Christmas market to the thrilling São Silvestre race, to the visit to Natário with its famous Berlin balls, each moment was filled with magic and Christmas spirit.
