A walk along the Hatibonico River channel [Eng/Esp]

When I say I live on an island, everyone thinks of beaches, sun, and palm trees. But in my case, I sometimes go more than two years without being able to see the sea. Over one hundred kilometers separate me from the ocean. However, my city has something that fascinates me, and that is precisely its rivers. Just yesterday, taking advantage of the cloudy and rainy weather, I went for a walk along the channel of the Hatibonico River, the largest river that crosses the city of Camagüey.

The Hatibonico is the main river in my city. Although its flow is quite modest, it has a historical and symbolic importance, as it was decisive for the foundation of this town, which was initially called Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe.

Today, this river is integrated into the city's urban landscape. Some trails have been built around its channel, giving pedestrians a way to be closer to nature. Although direct contact with the river and its waters is not permitted, knowing it is there, accompanying the city in its daily life, is something very pleasant.

They say the name Hatibonico is of Taíno origin, who were the island's original inhabitants. This somehow confirms that there were indigenous settlements in these lands before the arrival of the Spanish. Its exact meaning is unknown.

It is also said that when it was decided to found the town in this area, it was precisely because the river was a rich source of fresh water, which made the surrounding lands very fertile and prosperous for agriculture and livestock. Likewise, during that colonial period, its waters used to power the mills for grinding the wheat and corn that supplied the population, and it was also used for tanning hides in the tanneries, which was one of the city's main industries.

As I walked along the entire path built around the river, I could see its channel flowing in a winding manner with varying strength, as we are in a rainy season that can be intermittent.

Something else that is striking and deeply rooted in our culture are the large bridges that span the river. In the characteristic arch shape, some bridges define the landscape of this heritage city. These arches are very popular, as when the water rises to their level, the threat of floods throughout the city center can be imminent and dangerous.

The green vegetation surrounding the river is noteworthy, and some wildflowers can adorn the environment, which is also enjoyed by some animals, especially birds.

Although I began my walk with some sun and the need to put on a cap, I had to finish the walk with an umbrella because a persistent drizzle decided to accompany my final steps.

This river, which has also been celebrated by great poets and musicians, is a recurring topic in conversations among city dwellers. Although largely channeled, this natural element is part of the surroundings of the traditional neighborhoods.

It is true that, being an urban river, it has suffered the common impacts of pollution and environmental deterioration. Nevertheless, its historical value makes it a site of great interest. And for me, someone who is usually fascinated by water, I have often decided to accompany its course, just as it has accompanied the city for more than five centuries of history and dreams.

Un paseo tras el cauce del Río Hatibonico

Cuando digo que vivo en una isla, todos piensan en playas, sol y palmeras. Pero en mi caso, a veces paso más de dos años sin poder ver el mar. Más de cien kilómetros me separan del océano. Sin embargo, mi ciudad tiene algo que me fascina, y son precisamente los ríos. Justamente ayer, aprovechando el clima entre nublado y lluvioso, salí a dar un paseo por el cauce del río Hatibonico, el río más grande que atraviesa la ciudad de Camagüey.

El Hatibonico es el río principal de mi ciudad. Aunque su caudal es realmente modesto, tiene una importancia histórica y simbólica, pues fue decisivo para la fundación de esta villa, que en un inicio se llamó Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe.

Hoy este río se integra al paisaje urbano de la ciudad. Alrededor de su cauce se han construido algunos senderos que le dan al caminante una forma de estar más cercano a la naturaleza. Y aunque el contacto directo con el río y sus aguas no está permitido, saber que está allí, acompañando a la ciudad en su día a día, es algo muy grato.

Cuentan que el nombre Hatibonico es de origen taíno, que eran los habitantes originarios de la isla. Esto de alguna forma confirma que en estas tierras existieron asentamientos aborígenes antes de la llegada de los españoles. Su significado exacto se desconoce.

También cuentan que cuando se decidió fundar la villa en esta zona, se hizo justamente porque el río era una rica fuente de agua dulce, lo que hacía las tierras de los alrededores muy fértiles y prósperas para la agricultura y la ganadería. Igualmente, durante esa etapa colonial, sus aguas solían mover los molinos para moler el trigo y el maíz que abastecían a la población, y además se utilizaba para el curtido de pieles en las tenerías, que fue una de las principales industrias de la ciudad.

Mientras caminaba por todo el sendero construido alrededor del río, podía ver su cauce corriendo de manera ondulante con mayor o menor fuerza, ya que estamos en una época de lluvias que pueden ser intermitentes.

Algo también que es llamativo y muy arraigado en nuestra cultura son los grandes puentes que sobre el río se tienden. En la característica forma de arcos, algunos puentes dibujan el paisaje de esta ciudad patrimonial. Esos arcos son muy populares, pues cuando el agua asciende hasta su nivel, la amenaza de inundaciones en todo el centro de la ciudad puede ser inminente y peligrosa.

Llama la atención la verde vegetación que rodea al río, y algunas flores silvestres pueden adornar el entorno, que también es disfrutado por algunos animales, sobre todo las aves.

Aunque comencé mi paseo con algo de sol y con la necesidad de colocarme una gorra, debí terminar la caminata con una sombrilla, pues una pertinaz llovizna decidió acompañar mis últimos pasos.

Este río, al que también han cantado grandes poetas y músicos, es recurrente en las conversaciones de los citadinos. Y aunque en gran parte está canalizado, este elemento natural forma parte del entorno de los barrios tradicionales.

Es cierto que por ser un río urbano ha sufrido los comunes embates de la contaminación y el deterioro ambiental. No obstante, su valor histórico lo convierte en un sitio de mucho interés. Y para mí, a quien el agua suele fascinar, he decidido a menudo acompañar su curso, como él ha acompañado a la ciudad por más de cinco siglos de historia y de sueños.
