El Barquito, a stopover on the way to Cienfuegos [en/es]
This past weekend, we set off on a family trip to Cienfuegos, known as the Pearl of the South in Cuba. It was my husband, my mother, and me—filled with excitement and carrying the vivid memories of so many past visits, since my nephews are from Cienfuegos and we make the trip at least once a year to see them. Although our destination was clear, we made a stop along the way at a roadside rest area in the province of Matanzas, near the town of Australia, on the road that leads to the Zapata Swamp.
This roadside rest stop, called El Barquito, is located in the municipality of Jagüey Grande and has earned its reputation as a landmark for travelers thanks to its themed atmosphere and culinary offerings. What sets it apart is the visual and symbolic tribute it pays to the Zapata Peninsula, one of Cuba’s most unique tourist destinations. It’s hard to stop there without feeling the urge to keep going toward the Ciénaga, where the landscape is both stunning and immersive. If you’re nearby, don’t hesitate to visit. We had family waiting for us in Cienfuegos… otherwise, who knows.
El pasado fin de semana emprendimos un viaje familiar rumbo a Cienfuegos, la conocida Perla del Sur de Cuba. Íbamos mi esposo, mi madre y yo, llenos de expectativas y con el recuerdo vivo de tantas visitas anteriores, pues mis sobrinos son cienfuegueros y al menos una vez al año los vamos a visitar. Aunque el destino era claro, en el camino hicimos una parada en un parador de carretera ubicado en la provincia de Matanzas, muy cerca del poblado de Australia, en la vía que conduce a la Ciénaga de Zapata.
Este parador de carretera, llamado El Barquito, pertenece al municipio de Jagüey Grande y se ha ganado su lugar como punto de descanso emblemático por su ambientación temática y su servicio gastronómico. Lo que lo distingue es el homenaje visual y simbólico que rinde a la Península de Zapata, uno de los polos turísticos más singulares de Cuba. Es difícil detenerse allí y no sentir ganas de seguir hasta la Ciénaga, donde el paisaje es hermoso y envolvente. Si estás cerca, no dudes en ir. Nosotros teníamos a la familia esperando en Cienfuegos… si no, quién sabe.
The first thing that caught our attention was a white boat with blue and red stripes, installed as a monumental sculpture outside. On its side, the inscription "Zapata Peninsula, Cuba" reminded us that we were in a wetland of crocodiles and legends. This piece, which seems ready to set sail into history, stands on a bed of rocks and vegetation that reinforces its symbolic character. The image I took there captures that moment of pause and contemplation, as if the boat were inviting us to sail.
Lo primero que nos llamó la atención fue una embarcación blanca con franjas azules y rojas, instalada como escultura monumental en el exterior. En su costado, la inscripción “Península de Zapata, Cuba” nos recordó que estábamos en tierras humedas de cocodrilos y leyendas. Esta pieza, que parece lista para zarpar hacia la historia, se alza sobre un lecho de rocas y vegetación que refuerza su carácter simbólico. La imagen que tomé allí captura ese instante de pausa y contemplación, como si el barco nos invitara a navegar.
Inside the rest stop, rustic décor blends seamlessly with regional elements. We found wooden lamps, stone-clad walls, and a taxidermied crocodile that, far from being intimidating, serves as a playful nod to the area’s iconic wildlife. There are well-designed vendor stalls offering our delicious and refreshing piña colada, along with clean and functional restroom facilities for travelers. The souvenir shops showcase crafts and items that celebrate Cuban identity and the beauty of this region.
Dentro del parador, la decoración rústica se entrelaza con elementos de la región. Encontramos lámparas de madera, paredes enchapadas en piedra y un cocodrilo disecado que, lejos de parecer intimidante, se convierte en un guiño a la fauna emblemática de la zona. Hay puestos de venta bien diseñados donde se ofrece nuestra sabrosa y refrescante piña colada, además de instalaciones sanitarias limpias y funcionales para los viajeros. Las tiendas de recuerdos exhiben artesanías y objetos que celebran la identidad cubana y la belleza de esta región.
The snack was simple but comforting, giving us a chance to stretch our legs, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy the lush surroundings. Although we were eager to reach Cienfuegos, this stop offered us a moment of connection—with the landscape and with ourselves. My mother, ever observant, remarked that the place had a true “soul of the road,” and my husband agreed it was one of the best roadside stops we’d ever visited.
El Barquito is a symbolic gateway to the Zapata Swamp, a tribute to its waters, its wildlife, and its history. For those traveling this route, I recommend stopping, looking closely, and letting the details surprise you. Sometimes, the places you didn't plan to visit end up being the most memorable.
La merienda fue sencilla pero reconfortante, y nos permitió estirar las piernas, respirar aire fresco y disfrutar del entorno que cuenta con abundante vegetación. Aunque estábamos ansiosos por llegar a Cienfuegos, esta parada nos regaló un momento de conexión con el paisaje y con nosotros mismos. Mi madre, siempre observadora, comentó que el lugar tenía “alma de carretera”, y mi esposo coincidió en que era uno de los mejores paradores que habíamos visitado.
El Barquito es una antesala simbólica a la Ciénaga de Zapata, un homenaje a sus aguas, su fauna y su historia. Para quienes viajan por esta ruta, recomiendo detenerse, mirar con atención y dejarse sorprender por los detalles. A veces, los lugares que no estaban en el plan terminan siendo los más memorables.
And so, with the echo of the ship still in our eyes, we resumed our journey toward Cienfuegos. The journey continued. We moved away from that little boat, happy to see our nephews, but certain that we would soon take a tour of the Ciénaga de Zapata.
