Argentina - Day of trekking to take advantage of the good weather: Los Perros Lagoon, Raquel Lagoon and a surprise beaver sighting. / Día de trekking para aprovechar el buen clima: Laguna de Los Perros, Laguna Raquel y castor sorpresa. 😃❤️

Autumn was treating us to some beautiful days to spend outdoors, and of course we were making the most of them. When you're passing through a place as beautiful as Ushuaia, you really want to enjoy all the mountains you can. At that time, long treks didn't require much effort on my part, so I was always planning to go somewhere. And if it was a new place, even better, so one of those days I decided to go and see Los Perros Lagoon, without knowing that I would see some other things along the way ❤️.

El otoño nos estaba regalando unos hermosos días para estar al aire libre y por supuesto que estábamos aprovechándolos. Cuando estás de paso por un lugar tan hermoso como lo es Ushuaia, te dan muchas ganas de disfrutar todas las montañas que puedas. Para ese momento, los trekkings larguísimos no requerían mucho esfuerzo de mi parte, así que siempre estaba en plan de salir a algún lado. Y si era un lugar nuevo mejor, por lo que uno de esos días decidí ir a conocer la Laguna de Los Perros, sin saber que vería algunas cosas más en el camino ❤️.

Like so many others, Naty and I had rented a car that weekend and were lucky enough to meet more people to share the costs with. We had both been in Ushuaia for a while and wanted to go far down the road, to somewhere not so touristy, and we thought it would be difficult to find guests from the hostel who wanted to go, but that wasn't the case. I suppose it sounded interesting to them to go to a lagoon that wasn't as crowded as Laguna de los Perros.

Como en tantos otros, ese fin de semana Naty y yo habíamos alquilado el auto y tuvimos la suerte de conocer a más gente con quienes compartir los gastos. Ambas ya estábamos en Ushuaia hace rato y teníamos la idea de ir lejos en la ruta, a algún lugar no tan turístico y pensamos que nos costaría trabajo conseguir huéspedes del hostel que quisieran ir, pero no fue así. Supongo que habrá sonado interesante para ellos ir a una laguna no tan concurrida como lo es la Laguna de los Perros.

This place was unknown to me, but since we didn't have a definite plan, I decided to do what suited me best to continue exploring Ushuaia. To get to the start of this trail, we had to go to Paso Garibaldi, a mountain pass with a beautiful viewpoint overlooking Lago Escondido. Tourists usually just go to the pass and that's it, but two kilometres further on is this almost 6 km trek to the lagoon.

Este lugar era desconocido para mí, pero ya que no teníamos un plan definido, decidí hacer lo que me convenía a mí para seguir conociendo rincones de Ushuaia. Para ir hasta el inicio de este sendero tuvimos que movernos hasta el Paso Garibaldi, un paso de montaña en donde hay un lindo mirador del Lago Escondido. Generalmente los turistas llegan hasta el paso y listo, pero dos kilómetros más adelante esta este trekking de unos casi 6 km hasta la laguna.

Something that surprised us about this trail was that it was in good condition and had several wooden walkways, as well as being well marked with coloured signs. We thought it might be somewhat neglected, but quite the opposite was true. We started the route in an uphill forest and by the time we finally crossed it, we came across a large beaver dam. In all our previous treks, the beaver dams were always quiet, but this time there was a beaver swimming in it, perhaps because we went unnoticed. These animals are shy and hide when they see people, so we are pretty sure that this one did not notice our presence.

Algo que nos sorprendió de este sendero es que estaba en buen estado y con varias pasarelas de madera, además de bien señalizado con marcas de colores. Pensamos que podría estar algo abandonado, pero todo lo contrario. Empezamos el recorrido en un bosque en subida y para cuando finalmente lo atravesamos nos encontramos con una gran castorera. En todos nuestros trekkings anteriores las castoreras siempre estaban tranquilas, pero esta vez había un castor nadando en ella, quizás porque pasamos desapercibidos. Estos animales son tímidos y se esconden al ver gente, así que más que seguro que este no notó nuestra presencia.

Continuing on our way towards our final destination, we came across some other curious things. First, a large number of trees that had been recently felled by beavers. Remember that these animals are pests in Ushuaia and destroy all the forests in their path, so apparently this beaver dam was something new. Second, we saw a shoe on a tree, probably left behind by ‘trekkinicienta’: we spent the whole afternoon laughing about it. Finally, a small waterfall was the perfect place for a break to recharge our batteries.

Continuando nuestro camino hacia el objetivo final, nos encontramos con algunas otras cosas curiosas. Primero, una gran cantidad de árboles recién talados por los castores. Recordemos que estos animales son plagas en Ushuaia y rompen todos los bosques a su paso, así que aparentemente esta castorera era algo nueva. Segundo, en un árbol vimos una zapatilla, seguramente olvidada por "trekkinicienta": toda la tarde estuvimos riendo de eso. Por último, una pequeña cascada fue el lugar perfecto para un descanso intermedio recargador de energías.

Walking 6 km wasn't that far, but this trail had quite a few muddy climbs, so it took us a little longer than expected. However, the day was so beautiful and sunny that we enjoyed having to go there. In total, it took us almost two hours to reach Laguna de Los Perros, and when we did, it was a relief because the moment we had all been waiting for had finally arrived: lunch.

Caminar 6 km no era tanto, pero este sendero tuvo bastantes subidas con barro, por lo que nos demoramos un poco más de lo esperado. Sin embargo, el día estaba tan lindo y con sol que disfrutamos tener que ir hasta ahí. En total, nos tomó casi dos horas llegar a la Laguna de Los Perros y cuando lo hicimos, fue como un alivio porque al fin llegaba el momento más esperado por todos: el almuerzo.

What I liked most about Laguna de los Perros was the path, and although the lagoon was also beautiful, it didn't impress me as much as others I saw. Perhaps I had done so much trekking that I had almost lost my capacity for wonder, I don't know. We were having lunch and checking our offline map when we saw that there was another lagoon nearby. Hoping to see something a little more impressive, we headed there and arrived in 20 minutes. In my opinion, it was almost the same, although I liked the mountain in the background better.

De la Laguna de los Perros lo que más me gustó fue el camino y aunque la laguna también era hermosa, no me impactó tanto como otras que vi. Quizás había hecho tanto trekking que ya casi había perdido mi capacidad de asombro, no sé. Estábamos almorzando y revisando nuestro mapa sin conexión cuando vimos que cerca había otra laguna más: esperando ver alguna un poco más sorprendente nos dirigimos a ella y en 20 minutos llegamos. En mi opinión era casi igual, aunque la montaña que tenía en el fondo me gustaba más.

This second lake, called Laguna Raquel, was not part of our initial plan, nor was the second half of this trek. According to our map, we could continue further and return to Paso Garibaldi via an alternative route. Improvising in the mountains is not a good idea, but there were five of us with some mountain experience, so we did it. I would be lying if I said I didn't have serious doubts about doing this, but to everyone's relief, I can tell you that we came out safe and sound. Sometimes taking risks leads to even more adventurous stories 😃.

Esta segunda laguna, llamada Laguna Raquel, era una que no teníamos en nuestro plan inicial, al igual que la segunda mitad de este trekking. Según nuestro mapa, podíamos seguir más adelante y volver al Paso Garibaldi por un camino alternativo. Improvisar en la montaña está mal, pero éramos 5 personas con algo de conocimiento en montaña así que lo hicimos. Mentiría si dijera que dudé bastante sobre si hacer esto, pero para tranquilidad de todos, les digo que salimos sanos y salvos. A veces arriesgarse te lleva a tener anécdotas aún más aventureras 😃.
