It was already more than proven that in the northeastern provinces of my country, the afternoon heat is overwhelming, even in the middle of autumn. This climate justifies the daily siestas that everyone who lives there takes, but for me—who was traveling to explore and isn’t used to taking naps—it became somewhat inconvenient. I wanted to go out and explore without dealing with so much heat, so the best option was always to head out when the sun was going down. Even though I’m not a big fan of going out alone at night, I liked the city of Formosa because of how calm it felt and how well lit everything was 😃.

Ya era un hecho más que comprobado que en las provincias de noreste de mi país, el calor por la tarde era agobiante, incluso en pleno otoño. Este clima justifica las siestas diarias que toman todos los que viven ahí, pero para mí que estaba de paseo para explorar y que no suelo dormir siesta esto fue un inconveniente en cierto punto. Quería salir a pasear, pero sin pasar tanto calor, así que la mejor opción siempre era salir cuando el sol estuviera bajando. A pesar de que no soy muy fan de salir sola de noche, la ciudad de Formosa me gustó por lo tranquila que parecía y por lo bien iluminado que estaba todo 😃.

I had been very eager to arrive in this province since my father’s side of the family is originally from there. Over all these years, I had heard so many stories about life in Formosa that being there for the first time even felt a bit familiar. After a fairly stifling day, which I took advantage of to catch up on the blog, I used the time I had left in the evening after dinner to go out for a walk.

Había estado muy ansiosa por llegar a esta provincia ya que mi familia paterna es oriunda de ahí. En todos estos años había escuchado un montón de historias sobre la vida en Formosa, así que estar en ese lugar por primera vez hasta se sentía un poco familiar. Después de un día bastante sofocante, en donde aproveché para ponerme al día con el blog, el tiempo que me quedó a la noche después de comer lo usé para salir a caminar un poco.

What surprised me about this place was how clean and orderly everything was. The streets looked very neat, as did the buildings in the city center. There were several historic constructions, and all of them were in good condition. I had seen them in daylight on the day I arrived, but at night they were just as beautiful. I wasn’t expecting such an impressive display of lights, so it was nice to go out for a walk in the dark.

De este lugar me sorprendió lo limpio y ordenado que era todo. Las calles se veían muy prolijas, así como los edificios del centro. Este lugar tenía varias construcciones históricas, y todas estaban en buenas condiciones. Durante el día de mi llegada las había visto con luz del día, pero a la noche eran igual de hermosas. No me esperaba todo ese gran despliegue de luces, así que fue bueno salir a caminar un poco en la oscuridad.

In my opinion, the city of Formosa is quite conservative, so religion has a strong presence there. In addition to the beautiful cathedral, right by the riverfront there is a large depiction of the Last Supper, with life-size figures. These sculptures were very impressive, and with the lighting illuminating them, they looked even more realistic. I had to get closer to make sure they weren’t real people 😂.

Según mi opinión, la ciudad de Formosa es una ciudad bastante conservadora, por lo que la religión está bastante presente ahí. Además de la hermosa catedral, frente a la costanera del río se encuentra una gran maqueta de la última cena, con personajes a tamaño real. Estas esculturas eran muy impresionantes, y con la luz que las alumbraba, se veía aún más realista. Tuve que acercarme más para verificar que no eran personas de verdad 😂.

Another thing I liked about this city is that, being a border city, there was a strong military presence. The city borders Alberdi in Paraguay, and there is a boat crossing at a small local port. While many people don’t sympathize with the police, in my case—as a woman traveling alone—this made me feel safe. Plus, going out for a walk close to 10 p.m., it felt even more reassuring.

Otra cosa que me gustó de esta ciudad es que al ser una ciudad fronteriza, había mucha presencia militar. Esta ciudad limita con Alberdi en Paraguay, y hay un cruce en barco en un pequeño puerto local. Si bien hay mucha gente que no empatiza con la policia, en mi caso como mujer viajera solitaria, esto me hace sentir segura. Además, para dar un paseo casi a las 10 PM, esto me vino aún mejor.

If I had to complain about something during my time in Formosa, it would be the number of mosquitoes. Being by the river, surrounded by lush vegetation, came at a price: during this short walk through the city center and nearby areas, I got bitten by all kinds of little critters. Of course, it served as a lesson for the next day’s outing—not to leave without plenty of insect repellent.

Si tuviera que quejarme de algo durante mi paso por Formosa, sería de la cantidad de mosquitos que había. Estar a la vera del río con gran vegetación no era gratis: durante este breve paseo por el centro de la ciudad y alrededores, fui picada por cualquier cantidad de alimañas. Por supuesto, esto me sirvió como lección para mi paseo del día siguiente: no salir sin abundante repelente.

I really enjoyed making the most of the city both during the day and at night. Under both kinds of light, everything looked beautiful and well maintained. The city carries the slogan “Formosa Hermosa,” and I truly believe the authorities have made an effort to live up to it. Since it was dark, I obviously couldn’t take many decent photos of the riverfront, but that was precisely what pushed me to return to that area once again to see it in daylight—after preparing myself for the heat and the mosquitoes that would surely be waiting for me 😅.

Me gustó mucho haber aprovechado la ciudad de día y de noche. Con ambas iluminaciones, todo se veía hermoso y bien cuidado. Esta ciudad tiene el lema de "Formosa Hermosa", y creo que las autoridades se esforzaron porque así sea. Como estaba oscuro obviamente no pude sacar muchas fotos decentes de la costanera, pero esto fue lo que me obligó a volver a esta zona una vez más para verla con luz del sol. No sin antes, prepararme para el calor y para los mosquitos que estarían esperándome 😅.
