The Ohře Valley Hike

I'll be completely honest with you. We set out for the Ore Mountains in Northern Bohemia with a rather noble intention, at least from the Czech point of view. My girlfriend and I made our way to Perštejn intending to explore the local microbrewery for Beer Saturday this weekend. However, just driving there, doing the necessary sampling, spending the night, and returning safely to Prague would feel a tad dull. So instead, we devised a plan for a two-day hiking expedition in the Ohře River valley, followed by an ascent to the mountains to explore the mines in Mědník. These mines are a part of the Ore Mountain Mining Region, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Initially, we planned to tackle the trip in reverse. But, due to a bus breakdown that left us in Kadaň (where we had intended to catch a bus back home), we opted to begin with the more chill segment that suits hangover survivors better: a stroll through the valley. On the bright side, Kadaň held a town festival, and the locals dressed up in Middle Ages costumes. Unfortunately, our bus mishap cost us about an hour, limiting our time to mingle with them. Anyways, this is Kadaň as seen from the Ohře.

Budu k vám upřímný. Do Krušných hor jsme se s T. vydali z nejušlechtilejších možných důvodů. V Perštějně (neplést s Pernštejnem!) je minipivovar, který si zaslouží zmínku v rámci Beer Saturday. Ale dojet tam, splnit ochutnávací povinnost, přenocovat a vrátit se do Prahy, to by bylo tak trochu... Nezáživné. A tak jsme si naplánovali dvoudenní túru údolím Ohře, a pak taky do hor, nebo spíš českých hořiček, nedostali jsme se ani tisíc metrů nad moře. Každopádně štoly na Mědníku kousek od Perštejna jsou součástí Hornického regionu Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří, světové památky UNESCO.

Původně jsme chtěli jít naopak. Ale autobus měl poruchu, a tak jsme museli vystoupit už v Kadani, odkud jsme se původně chtěli vracet do Prahy. A tak jsme začali klidnější túrou podél Ohře, která se spíš hodí k rozchození kocoviny. Na druhou stranu jsme v Kadani potkali místní slavnosti, na které se lidé oblékli do středověkých kostýmů. Ale v rozbitém autobuse jsme ztratili spoustu času, a tak jsme se tu nemohli dlouho zdržovat. Každopádně tohle je výhled na Kadaň od řeky.

Those are snapshots of the medieval vibe on the way to the castle. It's admirable that in a town with a population of 18,000, seemingly hundreds enthusiastically participated in the festivities. What a spirit!

After weaving our way through the throngs of peasants, beggars, merchants, servants, and who knows who else, and leaving Kadaň, we unexpectedly came across a knight. He was open to having his photo taken, but only on one condition: that I only snap pictures when he was standing still. Given the heat, he wasn't fully decked out in his costume and joked that while riding, one might catch a glimpse of his undergarments. Whether or not that was true, I wasn't about to dispute the claim with an armed nobleman atop his horse.

Když jsme se prodrali skrze všechny ty vesničany, žebráky, obchodníky a nevolníky, a čert ví, koho všeho ještě, ven z Kadaně, narazili jsme na rytíře. Na fotky zapózoval rád, ale jen, pokud ho nebudu fotit v pohybu. Tvrdil, že kvůli vedru nemá celý kostým, a tak by mu mohlo být za jízdy vidět spodní prádlo. Jestli je to pravda, nevím, ale s ozbrojeným šlechticem na koni se není radno hádat.

Having left Kadaň and all horse-riding knights in our wake, it's time to return to the present day. This region is abundant in coal resources and has numerous coal-fired power plants. The neighboring Prunéřov Power Station is the largest in the Czech Republic, with power lines crisscrossing the landscape in every direction.

Kadaň i se všemi rytíři je za námi, a tak se vraťme do současnosti. V severních Čechách jsou uhelné pánve i elektrárny. Včetně té největší, Prunéřov, ke které se sbíhá vedení ze všech směrů.

Though this region used to be the most environmentally degraded, with the forests of the Ore Mountains suffering greatly from acid rain and air pollution, times have since changed for the better. Since the fall of communism in Czechoslovakia, the environment has seen significant improvement. The Ore Mountains are now thriving, perhaps embodied by the spirit carved into this once-dead tree.

Severní Čechy... To nebyl region tak úplně region "razovity", spíš region tak nějak "na piču", mám-li si vypůjčit slovník ozajistých haviřů. Místní lesy trpěly. Hrozivě. Byl tu i oscarový snímek Ropáci, na který T. připravuju, ale ještě ho neviděla. Každopádně pádem komunismu se situace začala měnit, a dneska už se dá v Krušných horách dýchat. A co víc, dneska se tam i Pražák jako já cítí jako v přírodě, Krušné hory opravdu prokoukly. Snad i díky duchům, kteří je střeží. Třeba tomuto.

All jesting aside, the mountains are now rejuvenated to such an extent that they can host beavers and mushrooms, as evidenced by the ones in the following photo.

Ale žerty stranou. Vrátili se sem bobři houby tu rostou jako po dešti, jak dokládají tyhle fotky.

Once we left the river for a while and climb up a hill, we could note the cooling towers of the Prunéřov plant in the distance. While they may resemble a nuclear facility, the plant actually burns coal.

Když jsme na chvilku sešli od řeky do kopečka, všimli jsme si Prunéřovat v dálce. I když jeho chladicí věže připomínají jadernou elektrárnu, jde samozřejmě o elektrárnu uhelnou.

Nevertheless, our route led us through open meadows and eventually back to the river.

Nás nicméně cesta provedla mezi loukami zpátky k řece.

Kde jsme narazili na "land artovou" galerii Mariánské údolí.

The gallery is in the woods, just on the outskirts of Klášterec nad Ohří. This town, with a population of around 14,000, boasts a sumptuous castle surrounded by a vast park of dendrological importance. As we strolled along the river, we somewhat bypassed the town, merely glancing at the castle from the park. A wedding was in progress there, and considering our less-than-formal hiking attire dripping with sweat, we opted against intruding to snap photos from the inner courtyard.

Lesní galerie je na kraji Klášterce nad Ohří, městečka s nějakými 14 000 dušemi, a také honosným zámkem v rozlehlém anglickém parku s mnoha významnými stromy. Když jsme k zámku dorazili, zrovna se v něm konala svatba. A protože jsme byli v outdoorovém a lehce propoceném oblečení, nechtělo se nám rušit svatebčany a prodírat se na nádvoří.

Apart from the castle, Klášterec nad Ohří also takes pride in its mineral springs and a modest spa area, though it appears somewhat neglected. The most renowned local spring, named Evženie, is protected with a cabin, where one can fill up for a mere pittance—roughly a penny per liter (well, to be precise, 3 CZK, which equates to about 15 US cents). Every so often, locals arrive with large bottles to collect the water, which surprised me. Given the water's high mineral content, you shall not consume it in large quantities. I can't imagine that storing it for several days in a plastic bottle would do its quality any favors. I also found it intriguing that someone is employed to supervise the water collection and handle the coin payments. Anyways, we filled up a small bottle to go and continued our journey.

Kromě zámku se Klášterec pyšní také minerálními prameny a malou lázeňskou kolonádou, i když ta má asi svá nejlepší léta už za sebou. Asi nejznámější místní pramen, Evženie, je chráněný budkou, ve které si za pár korun můžete minerálku natočit do vlastních lahví. Litr za tři koruny, půl litru za dvě. Místní si pro vodu jezdili s velkými lahvemi a brali třeba deset litrů, což mě celkem překvapilo. Evženie je hodně silná minerálka, a takovou vodu nemůžete pít po litrech. A několikadenní skladování v lahvi asi vodě na kvalitě moc nepřidá... Taky mě zarazilo, že je tu zaměstnaná paní, která pramen hlídá a vybírá drobné. Každopádně jsme si vyhodili z kopýtka, natočili malou lahev za celé dvě koruny a pokračovali v cestě.

After leaving the spa behind, our journey by the river led us through several "cottage colonies." These cottages are a quintessential feature of the Czech Republic, with nearly every family owning one. In the Ohře Valley, many of the "cottagers" are avid fishermen. As we wandered, we noticed numerous benches and chairs at the banks. And then I spotted this socket hanging from a tree trunk. Are there no electricians around!?

Když jsme lázně nechali za zády, cesta nás vedla skrze několik typických chatových osad. Pro našince běžný pohled, navíc skoro každá rodina nějakou má, ale pro cizince vesměs velká exotika. Spousta chalupářů na Ohři jsou rybáři, a tak byly břehy plné laviček a židliček. No, a pak na mě vybafla tahle zavěšená zásuvka. No, já tedy nejsem elektrikář, ale tohle bych na svědomí mít nechtěl :)

After covering more than 20 kilometers on foot, we finally arrived in Perštejn, our resting spot for the night. The locals there certainly have their priorities straight; the signs point to the town center, railway station, and, most importantly, the brewery. The very reason for our journey.

Když jsme měli v nohách něco přes 20 kilometrů, dorazili jsme do Perštejna, kde jsme měli zarezervovaný nocleh. A místní moc dobře vědí, co je důležité, stačí se podívat na tenhle rozcestník. Ano, pivovar, náš cíl.
