BUILDINGS, TRAFFIC, AND SCULPTURES ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF PULA

avatar

The day started as an ordinary Friday in November. I was planning to stay at home the whole time and prepare tons of photographs for future posts, but ...

(Enlargeable)

... but at half past ten AM, a friend needed a ride to the city. The city in question is Pula, the nearest one to the place where I live, and the friend in question is Denis, better known as @denisdenis here on Hive.

I don't remember why we were there, or what had to be done, but I remember, and the photographs I'm presenting here, clearly show, that we spent some time on the outskirts of the city when we finished all the important stuff.
Since I'm running pretty low on gas and money these days, I always insist on taking a bit of photographs when I'm driving around, at least for a relatively short post like the one I'm writing today.

In the opening photograph above this stretch of text, you can see the road that leads straight back to my hometown, and on the other side of the road, there are some colorful shops and businesses. In the distant background of the shot, you can see a cluster of houses in that suburban neighborhood.

(Enlargeable)

This lovely, old-fashioned pattern ...

(Enlargeable)

... is part of the large mosaic that covers most of an interesting house that stands out from all the other buildings around it. I mean the shape of the house isn't anything to write home about, many houses in the area look exactly like that, but the mosaic makes it attractive and special.

(Enlargeable)

The sky above me was pretty cool and dramatic. An interplay of sunlight and clouds created a free spectacle up there.

Here you can see the branches of the oleander in the yard. Only one flower on the entire tree was showy and fresh. That damn scarcity! Just like the house that flower was special too.
In the following photograph ...

(Enlargeable)

... I zoomed in on the houses across the road. There isn't much I can tell you about them. Just some ordinary suburban homes. There is a bit of diversity when it comes to the color of their facades.

(Enlargeable)

Not far from those houses, closer to the fairly large roundabout, there is this modern building finished a couple of months before the photograph was taken. It still looks empty.

(Enlargeable)

One of the most iconic things in that pretty unremarkable neiberhood is this dog-shaped balloon on the roof of the local pet shop.

At one point a car and a van passed in front of me. They were both white and looked pretty good in the scene. That's why this photograph was taken.

Here I zoomed in on some details of a tall billboard by the side of the road. These things represent trees, I guess. Nice design. Not too bad, not too bad.

Here you can see the tower ogf the big modern church, the only church in that suburban part of Pula. Its name is the Church of St. John the Baptist. It was built in 2005. I'm not an admirer of its design, but hey, it's a church - amen. God save the architect.

In one of the side streets that led to the green areas behind the suburbs, I came across a house of sculptures.

I was aware that the house was there but I never checked what it has to offer.

It's a cool place with some cool sculptures on display.

(Enlargeable)

Some of the sculptures were embedded into the garden wall. The things shown in this photograph smell like a secret society. I wonder what @lasseehlers could tell me about them.

(Enlargeable)

Is this a portrait made in stone ...

... or the remains of a petrified dude?

(Enlargeable)

Here you can see some minimalist shapes. The photograph is black and white but everything seemed pretty colorless at that point becouse the weather was getting totally cloudy, so it doesn't look much different from the rest.

(Enlargeable)

For me, the most interesting part was this covered terrace. Not so much for the sculptures but becouse of the light that wasn't as dull as on the outside.

Everything looked better here.

Quite surprisingly, this seahorse didn't look like a fish out of water among other petrified things. Its reflection and some vivid red details were nice additions to the scene.
This was the last photograph I took that day. Half an hour later we were back in Medulin, the small town where we live. My street is called Regi, and @denisdenis lives in the street called Sharaie - but hey, who the fuck cares about that.

When I first saw the first photo, I was thinking it's a wall paper or some rubber Carper until I saw the second photo. It looks amazing!

I love the Billboard, especially the green colour it caught my attention.

I won't be that surprised if the place with the interesting looking sculptures turns out to be a place for a secret society. The sculptured dude will seem scary when look at in a moonless night :)

The maps of all the buildings are very beautiful and the weather is also very nice when clouds is in the sky so it is a lot of fun to walk around.

ordinary suburban homes

Ordinary to you. Looks nothing like suburbs I've see in the U. S. This is a typical middle class Long Island suburb:

Levittown houses public library of congress.jpg
Public domain.

There are more affluent suburbs where the houses are further apart (some actually have acres to themselves), but this gives you an idea of the model most Long Island communities were built on. After WWII these communities sprang up like mushrooms. Levittown, pictured above, was probably the most famous.

The great part about traveling (or reading blogs from people around the world) is experiencing what 'ordinary' is to them.

Nice blog. Sculptures are fascinating too. Reminds me a little bit of Pompeii.

Good to see a bit of American suburbs in a cool black-and-white shot. 🙂 Even better to hear a few words about the recent history of your area. 😃 Your comments tend to be like little posts. That's a compliment, of course.

Yes, I also like to travel the world through the eyes of bloggers here on Hive.

True. 😃 Can be a bit boring in winter, but it makes up for everything in the summer.
