Ascending Monserrate Hill. the Iconic Viewpoint of Bogotá's Hilltop / Ascenso al Cerro Monserrate. el icónico mirador de la montaña en de Bogotá

Monserrate is one of the most iconic places in Bogotá, a fixed tourist destination in almost every guide that can be found. Perhaps for that very reason, I tried to avoid it, but thanks to the insistence of a friend, which I appreciated later, I ended up taking the trip to Monserrate hill, a privileged place to enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

The ascent is made in a peculiar cable car. While it is modern, its design is different from the lower capacity cable car I know in Venezuela.

At the departure station, I was able to admire a beautiful garden with some indigenous archaeological motifs that connect this place with its most remote past.

I was surprised in the elevator by the speed with which one has a very vertical view of the city, something I did not expect so suddenly. In addition to the speed of the ascent, it seemed to have a slight distortion in the appreciation, perhaps due to the perspective or the height above 3,000 meters above sea level.

Up there, of course, there was a large viewpoint from where one could appreciate the vastness of the valley that the city of Bogotá occupies today. There was also a large area for selling souvenirs and typical food, which looked very attractive.

We bought a couple of souvenirs, took a regulatory tour, and set off on the return after being in the area for about an hour.

We returned on foot, which took us about an hour, but it went by very quickly thanks to the pleasant conversation with my travel companion.

During the descent, I was able to better appreciate the details of the natural environment surrounding the hill, with its lush vegetation and the cobblestone paths that wind along the slopes.

I cannot deny that I enjoyed the impressive view of the city that stretches across the entire horizon of that immense valley, and I thought a lot about the great transformation of that great cultural landscape over all these years.
