On the road from Valera to Boconó, in Venezuela’s Trujillo state, lies a spot that’s a must-stop for everyone traveling along this Andean route: Árbol Redondo.

Situated at approximately 2,300 meters above sea level, the temperature hovered around 13°C (about 55°F) even as morning approached 10 a.m.

There’s a gas station and a couple of small shops where you can buy hot chocolate while you acclimate and take in the Andean scenery—surrounded by vegetable fields and offering sweeping views of the Trujillo mountains.

The road to Boconó struck me as one of the most beautiful routes in western Venezuela, winding through valleys and intensely green mountains, with a refreshing crispness in the air that always leaves you longing to return.
