Today I want to share something special with you, and if you’d like, I invite you to join me on this little journey.

Here’s the story:

On the Greek island of Rhodes, located in the southeastern Aegean Sea, there was a city with the same name as the island, which also served as its capital.

This city gained great fame as the site of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and it survived various sociocultural periods in human history, including the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and the Ottoman Empire.

However, it’s not about this Greek Rhodes that I want to tell you, but rather about another smaller one, located in the province of Cienfuegos, Cuba. Although it’s not directly on the Caribbean Sea, it is surrounded by the waters of a river with a name of Taíno origin called Damují (the Taínos were one of the peoples who lived in Cuba before the arrival of the Spanish).

This small town, also called Rodas —or affectionately known as the Villa del Damují—, was originally named El Lechuzo , presumably because in the wooded area of that time, many of these nocturnal birds, known as owls, could be found.

In 1869, the town adopted the name Rodas. Some say it was in honor of General Captain Caballero de Rodas, while others claim it was suggested by a local personality who visited the famous Greek island and proposed the name.

What matters is that the journey I’m inviting you to join began right on the river, where I admired the beauty of the landscape and discovered some small boats that show how fishing traditions remain an integral part of the region’s identity. I was particularly struck by a boat with a land-vehicle motor used to navigate the waters—a true example of Cuban resilience.

Later, I walked along the Prado promenade of the town (whenever I visit a Cuban city, I always find these kinds of promenades) and enjoyed two important moments.

First, the gazebo, a place where various cultural activities are held on weekends.

Second, the fish sculpture, a symbol of wealth and prosperity that reflects the identity of the town.

On the Prado promenade, several cultural institutions are also present, and I decided to visit the municipal museum. There, I was able to admire beautiful handmade crafts, such as plates, glasses, and other utensils, as well as an old record player that evokes past times.

I also visited a room dedicated to the history and traditions of the town, and finally, I couldn’t miss the room showcasing the history of the ancestors of the region. It was a short but spectacular tour.

After enjoying the museum, I decided to end my day sitting near the Damují River, drinking coffee and enjoying the breeze under the shade of the trees, while waiting for transportation to return to the city of Cienfuegos.

En la isla griega de Rodas, ubicada en el sudeste del Mar Egeo, existió una ciudad con el mismo nombre de la isla, que además fue su capital.

Esta ciudad alcanzó gran fama por ser la sede del Coloso de Rodas, una de las siete maravillas del mundo antiguo, y sobrevivió a diversos períodos socioculturales de la historia de la humanidad, como el Imperio romano, el Imperio bizantino y el Imperio otomano.

Sin embargo, no es de esta Rodas griega de la que les quiero hablar, sino de otra más pequeña, situada en la provincia de Cienfuegos, en Cuba y aunque no está directamente frente al Mar Caribe, sí está rodeada por las aguas de un río con nombre de origen taíno llamado Damují (los taínos fueron uno de los pueblos que habitaban Cuba antes de la llegada de los españoles).

Esta pequeña ciudad, también llamada Rodas —o conocida cariñosamente como la Villa del Damují—, tuvo como primer nombre El Lechuzo , presuntamente porque en la zona boscosa de aquella época abundaban estas aves nocturnas conocidas como lechuzas.

En 1869, el poblado adoptó el nombre de Rodas. Algunos dicen que fue en honor al Capitán General Caballero de Rodas, mientras que otros aseguran que fue sugerido por una personalidad local que visitó la famosa isla griega y propuso este nombre.

Lo importante es que el recorrido en el que los invito a acompañarme comenzó precisamente en el río, donde pude admirar la belleza del paisaje y descubrir unos pequeños botes que nos indican que la tradición de la pesca sigue siendo parte de la identidad de la región. Me llamó mucho la atención un bote con motor de vehículo terrestre para abrirse paso entre las aguas; pura resiliencia del cubano.

Luego caminé por el paseo del Prado de la ciudad (siempre que visito una ciudad cubana encuentro este tipo de paseos) y disfruté de dos momentos importantes.

Primero, la glorieta, un lugar donde se realizan diversas actividades culturales los fines de semana.

Segundo, la escultura del pescado, un símbolo de riqueza y prosperidad que refleja la identidad del pueblo.

En el paseo del Prado también están presentes varias instituciones culturales, y decidí entrar al museo del municipio. Allí pude apreciar la hermosa artesanía manufacturada, como platos, copas y otros utensilios, así como un antiguo tocadiscos que evoca épocas pasadas.

También visité una sala dedicada a la historia y tradición del pueblo, y por último no pude dejar de explorar la sala que muestra la historia de los antepasados del territorio. Fue un recorrido breve pero espectacular.

Después de disfrutar del museo, decidí terminar mi jornada sentado cerca del río Damují, bebiendo café y disfrutando de la brisa bajo la sombra de los árboles, mientras esperaba el transporte para regresar a la ciudad de Cienfuegos.
