Green Tiger Beetle (Cicindela campestris)

I have been spending lots of outdoors time lately doing activities with the kiddos. I am not much of a photo guy but I think I'll start taking pics and blog about them to spice things a bit

We even do some treasure hunting these days with a metal detecting pointer although we haven't found anything cool yet!

Anyways, here's a critter we stumbled upon today! It's nothing super fancy but it did pique my interest cause it's the first time I encountered it:

A few years ago identifying an insect would take plenty of google searches...Nowadays just a click and Google lens takes care of everything.

The answer is:

Cicindela campestris

Commonly known as the green tiger beetle, it turns out it's a pretty common beetle in Europe measuring about 12–15 mm.

Nothing special to say about them other than that they fast little buggers, speed—running up to 60 cm per second. Oh, and if you ever see one keep some distance. They have a painful bite :D

But let's be honest, you have that bite coming if you pet this angry looking fella:

Here are two vids of the species for your viewing pleasure

And here's a link to Wikipedia if you'd like to learn more!

Ok friends this is it for today!

"spending outdoors time doing activities with the kiddos" that's really great- time goes fast nothing better than beautiful moments to remember. from far "Green Tiger Beetle" looked pretty, from close not that much haha, "speed—running up to 60 cm per second" that part was kind of funny haha, after all it's indeed cool. have a great day

It's amazing how quickly we can figure species out from a photo nowadays.

Yeah at least now i can run from the famous sentence "you need to know what bug it is, you went to biology school". I just open an app that identify the animal 🤣

It looks like a scary beetle. I would avoid it and I don't think getting bit would feel nice either.

Great that you are spending time with the kids and playing with a metal detector can be very fun!
We got a metal detector too a while back and it was the hottest attraction once we got it. Altough the hype does die down after a while 😅.

The bugs look nasty from a far, beautiful from a mid distance and alien lookingly creepy at close distance. I like the green though.

Well we mix things up all the time so hopefully it will last for a while.... I probably enjoy it more than the kids 😂

That's pretty cool! I love seeing colorful insects, but that one I'll pass on picking up if it has a nasty bite. I love Google's reverse image search, you can out pretty much anything anymore in a couple of clicks!

Yikes. I live in winter wonderland. Not because I like the cold, but because I don't like bugs.
