Glass bottles contain more microplastics than plastic bottles

I was surprised to read this news today. We all think that it is safe to use Glass bottles when compared to plastic bottles, but a recent study has found that glass bottles had more plastics compared to plastic bottles. The main reason was that the glass bottles had a cap that was made of plastic and that plastic cap was continuously leaking plastic into the bottle. From what we understand, if we go fully glass, this may not have been a problem but just because we used a small amount of low-quality plastics, many people were affected because of this, and it was even identified to be a cancer causing agent.

This happened in France, and a French study revealed this finding. People are switching to metal and glass alternatives, like how it used to be before. There are even bottles made out of bamboo. The problem with these innovation is that they all include a small element of plastic in their product, and ultimately that will end up in creating troubles. If we choose the natural products, then we have to make sure it is fully natural and we are not even using plastics in packaging or transportation material. Sometimes, some amount of plastic might be necessary, but we have to be careful with how much we are spending and how much waste we are creating out of it.

I was using metal bottles for my needs. Espcially the bottles that can withstand heat is of great demand. There is a small rubber portion in the cap of the bottle, and that rubber portion is used to keep the bottle sealed tightly. But what happens is that sometimes the rubber is not made of pure rubber; instead, some plastic is mixed. That keeps mixing up in the water and even changes the taste of the water. There should be a solution for this. Today, safe alternatives are available, and Silicone is a good alternative. I was asking AI if Silicone is safe compared to plastic products.

Silicone is generally considered safer and more environmentally friendly than plastic, though it's not without its considerations. While both are polymers, silicone is more stable, less likely to leach chemicals, and doesn't break down into harmful microplastics like many plastics do. However, silicone is not perfectly inert and can release chemicals under certain conditions, and its recyclability is limited.

Because Silicone is not easy to break down, I think it should be used widely for sealants in the water bottle so that Silicone does not wooze out into the liquid and even if that happens it is not a threat or as bad as microplastics which can straight away cause cancers. Glass bottles can still be a good option but the caps should not be made of plastics but instead cork or silicone can be used.

hmm glass bottles here have a metal cap, not a plastic one...also plastic bottles have plastic cap so it will also ruin the water but you have the full bottle too

as for metal, avoid alluminium, that drops it and you drink it

Did you thought about the inner layer of the metal cap? ;)

Next time I'll give a look, but I'm pretty sure I seen rust on a cap of a bottle I kept at home in the inner part

At least we in Europe have a plastic seal part in these. But anyway, everything today is filled with microplastic - it is almost unavoidable. Time to think about our (plastic-) consumerism

That's true, we use too much plastic and I see it also from how much plastic garbage I produce, everything is inside plastic

deep sigh! We're not going to make it out of life alive anyway..

Thanks for the information, this is really interesting to note !

We definitely need to find a way of recycling plastic usage in this our present world actually I must confess
