Old 'N' New
I'm not good enough
'Cause you got another
Like me, new
An old hand's always better
You forget 'cause the new
Is all shiny and minty
Sweet scents of jasmine and rose
Emits, clouding your memories
Until a shiny nut falls off
It's rickety-rack
I smirk at your sober return
An old hand's always better.
A small incident happened earlier today that got me to pen down this short poem. I've no idea what the style or type of poem this is but in this contemporary age, most writers adopt the free style. So bear with me.
A close relative was offline for two days and I was very worried. It's just unlike him. Ah, I remembered his roommate, searched and got his phone number in an old email. Crazy, right? We do what we have to in circumstances like this. Finally, I got in touch with my cousin and the reason for his absence was his new iPhone crashed and he'd taken it for repair. He was very unhappy and livid about it.
I reminded him of the old phone he had before buying the new one. It was like this young man had amnesia or something but he exclaimed and promised to switch his SIM card to the old phone until the new one was fixed. I shook my head at his oblivion and fell into a reflection of being cast aside and forgotten. That's what my cousin did to his old phone.
We find it offending and hard to accept that we are easily replaceable, especially by something new, trendy and shiny. Some workers are worried that in this age of artificial intelligence, they'll lose their jobs and relevance. We buy something new and quickly cast aside the old.
Do we consider what happens when the "new" becomes faulty? We switch back to the "old" that was cast aside and forgotten. Or we return to the old when the novelty of the new wears off. This same thought works for experience. Never underestimate familiarity and experience because they hold a unique charm. You have a new friend and are swayed by his charm and forget your old friends.
I'm not against anything new but how about we keep them both close? Love both the new and old. Juxtapose them like twin blades and make good use of them. Maybe it will make your work perfect. Just saying…if it doesn't work, choose what you must! Hehe.
What meaning do you make of these verses? I'll gladly welcome your thoughts in the comments.

Your poem beautifully encapsulates the delicate dance between valuing the old and embracing the new. May I know, how do you usually find inspiration for reflecting on such universal themes in your poetry?
Hello, @rak7! Thanks so much for reading my poem. Hehe. I think I'm an introspective person and observe people and things a lot. I often draw inspiration from my personal experience, reading books and the world around me. Thanks again for the kind words. !PIMP 🙂

When I read the poem, I didn't think you were talking about an object, but about the relationship between two people and that's fine, you made an analogy and I think it came out well. Greetings.
I see what you mean! It's actually like a persona poem, speaking from the point of view of another person, figure or object. I imagined it's the old object fuming at its abandonment and possible reconciliation with its owner. Still, the poem could also depict human relationship. Thanks so much for your insightful comment. 🙂 !PIZZA
