5 Minute Freewrite - Dirty Dish

Doing a challenge on 5 minute Freewrite, please see below for my story:

The sound of the dishes clinking in the sink echoed through the small kitchen. Emma stood there, her hands submerged in the warm, soapy water, her eyes closed against the steam. She hated washing dishes. It was always the same, the same dirty dishes from the same meals, day after day.

Emma's mind began to wander. She thought of all the places she had been and all the amazing things she had seen. She was so grateful for the life she had been given, for her family and her home, and yet she had grown bored with it all. She wanted something more.

Suddenly, a voice broke into her thoughts.

'Emma, what are you doing?'

It was her mother. She had come into the kitchen to find her daughter standing there, still as a statue, her hands in the water and her eyes closed.

'Oh, nothing,' Emma said, quickly pulling her hands out of the water. 'Just washing some dishes.'

Her mother smiled and shook her head. 'Well, I'm glad you're doing something productive, but don't forget about the dirty dishes in the sink.'

Emma sighed and looked back at the sink. She knew she had to finish the task, but her mind was already drifting back to the places she wanted to go and the things she wanted to do.

She grabbed a dishcloth and began to scrub the dishes, her mind wandering with each swirl of the cloth. As she worked, she imagined all the possibilities that lay ahead.

When she was done, she dried the last dish and smiled. She had done it. She had faced a task she had disliked and finished it. It was just one step, but it was a step towards a bigger goal.

Emma knew that if she could conquer the dirty dishes, she could conquer anything.
