Rudy's stomach issues are back to normal, and he is no longer constipated. Constipation is one of the top problems when it comes to a rabbit's health, and it can be deadly.
Every day while I clean his litter box and take the old grasses he did not eat out of the cage, I will set a carrot in the "window" of his house and he will eat it and go back to sleep for another hour or two.
Yesterday I tried once again to give him celery instead of a carrot. He wasted no time running out of his house and boxing my hand. He also had a few words to say to me. I wish I knew what he is saying, or maybe I don't want to know. I never knew rabbits could make a noise.
I call it talking because he will run right up to me and start squeaking. I will move to the other end of his cage, and he will run to where I am and squeak at me some more.
They say rabbits don't eat the bottom part of a carrot in the wild because they are underground, so they only eat the tops. Whether rabbits eat them or not, Rudy loves carrots. So a carrot, if I had to rank it! would be his favorite food. I even gave him a few blueberries, and he went for the carrot first.
We saw a wild rabbit eating the flowers from this weed, so I researched it before cutting it for Rudy.
It is called Bidens alba, but some call it Spanish needle. I have always called it a pain to get rid of. But now that I have researched it, I am finding it is a beneficial weed.
It is used to treat inflammation, arthritis, eczema, and skin infections. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties, and is used to treat colds, flu, and urinary tract infections. Some studies show that it may have anticancer properties, and it could inhibit the growth of cancer cells. It is used to help with urination and flush out toxins. I do not know how you use it for these things.
But you can make a poultice from the leaves and put it on a wound, it helps with healing and scarring. It is also said to treat MRSA. It can also help your immune system.
Bidens Alba has been used safely and effectively in traditional medicine for centuries. In Jamaica, they make a tea from the leaves (or the flowers soaked in rum) for colds and toothaches. I think the rum would help, A LOT. The flowers are also edible.
Not a very good picture, but this is why I hated this weed. I have always called it Preacher's lice. Every flower will turn into these little burrs. When you brush up against it, they stick to your clothes, not in a cluster like in the picture, but each little sticker gets you.
I need to research every weed on my property. There is no telling how many weeds I have that are good weeds. Another weed I found was Chamber Bitter, and I found it can help people who suffer from kidney stones. As far as Bidens Alba goes, how would you rank it?

Glad to hear that Rudi's stomach's problems are finally normal now. For Bidens Albà, I'll also rank it higher since it is also beneficial.
Thank you for the good wishes for Rudy. Yes Bidens alba has a lot of benefits, and all this time I thought it was a terrible weed to have around and have been trying to get rid of it, now I will keep an area for it.
What a cute bunny. Rudy looks happy, just have to keep his insides happy. !BBH
Thank you, I hurt when he does not feel well, so I am glad he is back to normal.

Remember, a "weed" is usually just a plant growing where a human decided they didn't want it to be. Some are invasive, but many are just natural plans doing their natural plant thing. Others, like dandelions and purslane, are edible, and as you noted, many have been used medicinally as well.
Dandelions are edible? That's a shocking discovery. Can it be like used to make soup?
People usually add the leaves to salads, flowers are used to make dandelion wine, and even the roots are edible. Just don't harvest them too late or they get bitter, and don't eat them from places which may have been exposed to herbicide.
Noted. Thank you so much.
@teknon you can also make tea from the roots of dandelions.
Pardon me if this is a novice question, but do you boil the roots in the kettle or just steep them in hot water like tea until they release their nutrients?
To make dandelion root tea, wash and chop dandelion roots, then roast them in the oven for about 10-15 minutes until they are dark brown. Add 1-2 tablespoons of the roasted roots to hot water and simmer for 5-10 minutes. Strain the roots from the liquid and enjoy your tea, adding honey or another sweetener if desired to reduce any bitterness.
This is knowledge our ancestors knew, and over time, we have gotten away from their knowledge of plants. Rudy loves dandelions, but I can not give him too many of them. He eats purslane, too.
This was such a fun and informative read!
I couldn’t help but smile at Rudy boxing your hand over the celery. Haha, rabbits really do have their own personalities.
My dad has a rabbit too, and it’s the same way with food. Once they decide what they like, you can’t trick them into switching, no matter how healthy the alternative is.
I had no idea about Bidens Alba though, never even knew the name. I’ve always just seen it as a weed, but now you’ve made me curious about what other ‘weeds’ might be hiding benefits. If I had to rank it, I’d say Rudy definitely has the right idea, carrot first, then maybe the rest later. Hehehe.
Thank you for reading and your nice comment. Is your dad's rabbit a wild one or a tame rabbit? Rudy is a wild rabbit, he is a cottontail. One of my dogs found a nest and killed Rudy's sibling. Rudy did not have his eyes open yet, I hand fed him, he will be 2 years old this December. Rabbits do have unique personalities.
You asked about dandelions in soup, which made me wonder about Bidens alba. This is what AI said about it.
You can make soup with Bidens alba. The young leaves, flower buds, and young flowers of this plant, also known as Spanish Needles, are edible and can be cooked like potherbs. In many parts of the world, people boil the leaves and shoots and add them to soups and stews.

Oh poor thing.
My dad’s rabbit is tame, but sometimes she acts just like a wild one. Once she got out of her pen, darted straight into the farm, and immediately started digging an escape tunnel. I guess those instincts never really go away, haha.
She has cute bunnies now though. They’re about 2months old.
This is helpful. Thank you so much.
