Fledgling: Part 65

Greeting Readers!

I actually had time to write! I hope you enjoy the update.

Fledge was sure he had the right time and dimension. The fact that the Fell Dragon was now with them felt like a blow to his plan, but she seemed more preoccupied with antagonising her twin. He couldn’t let her get in the way of his plan. However, she seemed more interested in Saita than she was in him.

The way she had looked him up and down was unnerving. He didn’t know what recognition she saw within him, but he hoped that she would stay away from him. He was only here for one thing, and that was to get Bolx alone for a chat. Just one quick word was all he needed.

His thoughts snapped back as the two Wolven pulled the veil open to reveal a snow-covered landscape. Fledge couldn’t help but shudder. This land was deeply scarred and was barely keeping it together. Why Aidan came here he would never understand.

He did, however, consider the sheer raw power and ability it took for him to reach all the way out here with no formal training. Before he could step through the veil, Kay barrelled past and jumped into a snow drift.

She had jumped into the air, tucked her legs under her, grabbed her knees, and vanished into the depths, giggling. It wasn’t really a giggle of pleasure but rather one that seemed forced and practiced. He heard Saita sigh behind him. Clearly, she too felt that they were now babysitting an overgrown toddler. One that nearly ended all time and space, but an overgrown toddler all the same.

With a spray of snow into the air, the Dragon emerged from the snow drift shaking herself as if she were a dog. She stared at the others as if confused as to why they didn’t also join her. Instead of feeling self-conscious, she threw her arms back and collapsed on the snow once more. Now seemingly to happily make snow angels.

“This is the place.” Said Fledge to Saita. “Can you sense them?”

Saita stepped from the tear in the veil and shivered. They were hardly dressed for this weather, but she hoped that they wouldn’t be here for too much longer. She just needed to tell Aidan what he had to do, and then…

The thought halted in her head. Then what? They would get to go live their lives, and she? What was left for her? She agreed to be the Dragon, but she didn’t know what that truly entailed, and now she had Kay with her. Would she be bound by the promises Saita made?

She wasn’t overly fond of Kay, for many reasons, but there was too much guilt at thinking about possibly locking her up again.

“Saita.” Snapped Fledge. “Is this the place?”

She closed her eye and concentrated on the energy around her. While this planet wasn’t dead, it didn’t have the level of life force Saita would have expected from a planet. It had been so long since she had felt the life force from Aidan and Bolx, that she struggled to find them, but when she did, she found that they were not alone.

“I believe I have found them, but they are surrounded but also with others.”

Red-Eye pointed his snout into the air and breathed deeply. Then, a growl escaped his throat. The growl seemed to alert Kay, who leapt from the snow and came to stand before the Wolven.

“What?” she demanded as if ordering an answer.

“Jackal.” Growled Red-Eye.

Saita wasn’t sure if it was a growl or word at first, but it was Kay’s disgusted look that gave what it was.

“Who is Jackal?” asked Fledge.

Kay snorted. “No one important.”

Red-Eye gave a strange yip sound as if wanting to say something but cutting himself off. Kay noticed. She reached up to his snout and pulled him down to her level.

“What? You can speak now without the influence of the cage and me.”

“Jackal isn’t a no one. He is the leader of the Mad Pack.”

“Really, that moth-eaten rug?” queried Kay.

“Had he been faster, he likely would have killed you before you killed our previous Master.” Said Red-Eye.

That made Kay pause. It wasn’t exactly fear, but the look on her face was odd. As if she were looking back at how her history could have been rewritten. Then, a look of horror crossed her face. That was a look not even Red-eye had seen before.

“He’s going to kill Aidan and Bolx.” She snapped, and then she took off.

Except this time, she wasn’t falling through the snow. Instead, she was pushing off invisible points over the snow and propelling forward.

“How the hell…?” stammered Fledge.

“Less talk, more run.” Snapped Red-Eye as he gripped the back of the young man’s shirt to throw him onto his back.

He then looked at Saita, who put her hands up defensively.

“I’ve figured out how she does that. I’ve had time to. I can follow as needed.”

“Then follow.”

While this sounds like we're getting to the end of the story, trust me, there is still a lot left to say.
