MicroFiction: A 250 word story format that I often utilize to address the daily prompts. The story today is written using the word prompt "confidence in the system".
...To have confidence means to possess a solid trust in a belief or a person. You genuinely feel that you can place you life, possessions, or belief that whatever the situation entails will have or be in your best interest. You can rest comfortably without worry that the task will be handled correctly. I share with you a flash fiction story along those lines.
For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the @daily.prompt's publishing of 16 June 2025, @mariannewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2769: confidence in the system.
Below is my story:
I can sense it approaching. That sudden stab of fear that assaults you when unexpectedly from out of nowhere a pot drops from its place in the lower cabinet. I can hear other shiny faces demanding that it quiet down else risk Naomi frantically tearing at the knobs to investigate. I can feel her pulse synchronize with my own through her veins. Imagine her nervously glancing at the stove's clock.
Suddenly, the phone rings. My heart sinks as I realize that confidence in the system she abjectly refused to believe when her next door neighbor visited is restored.
I listen intently. In forty-eight hours, my ability to weave through this space undetected will vanish. Credibility lost.
Urgency is the utmost impression claiming my purpose.
I document previous night's traffic flow.
The day's work completed, I pull the coverlet up around my neck. Several times I doze off, but jerk back instantly. This pattern continues until daybreak.
I wake to voices unfamiliar to my device filter through the ceiling. Throwing back the covers, I tiptoe across the floorboards toward the connection I carefully installed and peer downward.
Sable, sultry strands flowing around her shoulders snap as tones of deep resonance bounce back. Two males. They work furiously. Heavy tools from belts around their waists clank in an effort to assist in the time-sensitive assignment.
With confidence, Naomi extends her arms. Gratitude in one; payment in the other.
Silent alarm installed.
Believing she's secure, Naomi phones in attack plans.
Threat assessment confirmed.

La vigilancia
Siento que se acerca. Esa repentina punzada de miedo que te asalta cuando inesperadamente, de la nada, una olla se cae de su sitio en el armario inferior. Puedo oír otras caras brillantes que exigen que se calme o se arriesgan a que Naomi rasgue frenéticamente los pomos para investigar. Puedo sentir su pulso sincronizarse con el mío a través de sus venas. Imagínatela mirando nerviosamente el reloj de la cocina.
De repente, suena el teléfono. Mi corazón se hunde al darme cuenta de que ha recuperado la confianza en el sistema que se negaba a creer cuando la visitó su vecina de al lado.
Escucho atentamente. En cuarenta y ocho horas, mi capacidad para moverme por este espacio sin ser detectada desaparecerá. Credibilidad perdida.
La urgencia es la máxima impresión que reclama mi propósito.
Documento el flujo de tráfico de la noche anterior.
Terminado el trabajo del día, me subo la colcha al cuello. Varias veces me quedo dormido, pero vuelvo a sobresaltarme al instante. Este patrón continúa hasta el amanecer.
Me despierto al oír voces desconocidas que se filtran por el techo. Tiro las mantas hacia atrás, me pongo de puntillas por el suelo hacia la conexión que he instalado con cuidado y miro hacia abajo. Sable, mechones bochornosos que fluyen alrededor de los hombros chasquean mientras rebotan tonos de resonancia profunda. Dos hombres. Trabajan furiosamente. Las pesadas herramientas de sus cinturones tintinean en un esfuerzo por ayudar en esta tarea urgente.
Con confianza, Naomi extiende los brazos. Gratitud en uno; pago en el otro.
