It is the time of the year where performance appraisal is drawing to an end where leaders finalize the inputs of each of the individual employees and rank it against the rest of the other employees from other department.

This is an exercise that takes up alot of time as there will be endless disputes and discussion to whom is a better performer than the other. While the fundamentals are truly based on performance and merits, there are others whom can use alternative performance indicators and brute force their way through. This is something that does not sit well with me, while alternative indicators might showcase that an employee can display certain traits, but to me, that is not what the company hire these people for. One can be great at organizing events, but if that person's role is an engineer, why not leave organizing events to the professionals.

If an engineering company is ranking their employees by attributes and capabilities that is not part of their main function, then what kind of people are we exactly appraising?

Well written piece, I totally agree there’s no totally fairness, an employee to be rank by another employee is a different idea to digest.
