Week 353 | My Splinterlands Art Contest Entry | The Gorlodon
For this week's card, I chose The Gorlodon. ๐ As you can see, I am focused on creatures and elements for the previous weeks compared to humans. I wanted to draw beyond human anatomy and to explore more about it. ๐
This creature looks like a combination of an octopus and a crab, the size of a megalodon. Megalodons are super big sharks that lived in the dinosaur era, I believe. Some say they still exist to this day, but scientists are sure that these creatures are now completely extinct. The vast ocean carries a lot of mystery and eeriness. Ugh, I cannot imagine living with them, haha. By the way, I watched the two movies about megalodons. It sure gave me an idea of how these creatures live.
I skipped last week's contest because I had a busy schedule. ๐ The whole week was a combination of scramble and chaos in an organized way. Though I had the time to draw, my body wanted to rest instead. I posted this early for the week since it was supposed to be posted later last week.
Supposedly, this is my entry for last week, but it was not finished before the deadline. Anyway, here is my art process. Enjoy! ๐
Art Process
- sketch and lineart
I first looked up a picture of a hermit crab because I felt it resembled the outline of this creature. Using its outline, I added more details from the original art like the tentacles, single eye, and sharp teeth. The limbs and hands looked like tridents, so I just patterned them to look like forks, haha. I used a pencil-textured brush.
Before, I used to use a cell brush with no texture at all. I kept experimenting with brushes on what I liked, and then I discovered different textured brushes. That was when I started liking pencil textured brush. I think it made my art more interesting. ๐
- basecolor and shading. Added the color background.
I copied the base color from the original card. Using my eyes, I can see deep blue and indigo. But with the help of some default tools on Clip Studio, I can exactly know the shade. Using the color picker tool, I can copy the color of the subject. I can also adjust the hue and contrast of the shade if I want to.
Here, I experimented with different shades of purple and blue, and sprayed orange to maroon for the accent color. I also do manual color skimming just using my eyes. Sometimes, the light and shadows affect the color, so it really depends on how you want your subject to be. The environment also has a big impact on the colors. For example, for this art. It is under the sea. So naturally, it is dark and less light.
For the background, I chose green because of the underwater plants.
Final Art
Since I had some Clippy Points going expired, I decided to spend them on an image brush. Clippy Points are used to buy brushes, 3D models, etc, in the Clip Studio Asset store. I had the chance to get tons of free Clippy Points by just logging in to the software. It was an easy task and tadaaa~ I got a lot of brushes! ๐
I bought some image brushes of kelps, seaweeds, and sea grass. Lastly, I added bubbles and lightning.
Software: Clip Studio Paint Pro
That is it for this art blog. I will see you at the next one!
