The Gorilla God's Go-To Girl: Balancing Comedy and Drama - Review

The Gorilla God's Go-To Girl

credits

Recently, I have been searching for some animes to watch, looking for something that I have not seen before. I was expecting to see something exceptional, not the same stories that I have watched before. I wanted to see a female protagonist, and then I found this anime called The Gorilla God's Go-To Girl. Yeah, that's a long name, and the story is kind of weird for me. Actually, it's my personal opinion because other people might have a different point of view about it. Well, I would say it's my first time watching this anime, and I don't know how to explain what I felt about it. Anyway, let's begin.

Here's the trailer; you can watch it to gain some knowledge about the anime I am talking about. I started watching this anime randomly, even without watching the trailer, and it's my first time watching it because I am sharing it here with you guys. The trailer is not that great, but it sets up something resembling a reverse harem. Our main protagonist received the Gorilla God's blessing, and she is scouted by the royal knights, which looks very interesting. I have read a few similar stories in Manhwa where they receive blessings from animal gods, but I do not remember the names. Actually, this type of anime is up to my taste; I really like it.

Spoilers Ahead!

The story begins with a girl named Sophia Reeler. In her world, there is an event when individuals turn 16 and receive blessings from various animal gods at that age. Sophia is a shy girl who always tries not to stand out, but now it is Sophia's turn to select a card. She closed her eyes and chose one, and it's the Gorilla card. She now has immense strength and has become a superhuman with the power of ten men. However, she doesn't want anyone to know about her ability, as she wants to stay out of everyone's sight.

But little did she know that she would be required to be one of the knights because of her super strong powers. She was asked to participate in the tests, and on her way to the camp, she saw an old man struggling to pick up his things. Our protagonist felt bad but didn't want to reveal her powers; still, she could not help herself from helping the old man, and she grabbed the heavy items all by herself and carried them for him. This depicts how powerful our female lead is.

After that, our female lead encountered one of the main characters, Louis Scarrel. When they first met, Sophia didn't acknowledge him, but she was admiring how amazing he looked; she was mesmerized by his handsome face. Louis helped her find the camp where she would be taking the test, and after that, she went on and finally found the place she was looking for. Later when she was on the ground Louis appeared as the knight and Sophia was shocked.

During the test, she got to meet Isaac. He is a blond guy with a very athletic build, and his animal card is a dog. He can run very fast and passed the running test. After that, when it was Sophia's turn, she broke through the wall while running, as she was feeling very lightweight and didn't know how to control her powers. This scenario impressed everyone with her performance, as at first, everyone thought lowly of her because she was a girl. The ground was full of boys, so they didn't expect a girl to participate with them.

The second guy she met was Eddie, another black-haired guy. He doesn't talk much, and his animal card is a cat, which explains very well why he does not communicate that well, but he does when it's necessary. As the test ended, Sophia and Isaac were on their way to exit when they saw Eddie being bullied, so Sophia saved him with her power. Eddie was smart enough to realize that Sophia had the Gorilla God's blessing power. As time passed, Sophia grew close to Eddie and Isaac.

Well in the story there are many things you would be interested in but I am not going to spoil it all for you guys, I have only described about episode 1 and there's many more episodes you will encounter many new things. I like how fast forward is everything there's no slow burn. But one thing I didn't like that the animators didn't put any effort into the details such as back ground characters they don't even have a face, every time I watch the new episodes when I see characters with no face it makes me uncomfortable I don't know why but I have never noticed things before as much as I do now.

It's obvious I would have high expectations after watching so many high visual animes. My expectations are very high for qualities. Anyway, I still like the storyline it's smooth like butter. I like the boy characters they are really admirable and my favourite is Issac he is really a cutie. Other than that I don't like seeing weak female leads like someone who is dumb and doesn't know how to handle things. Our protagonist is shy I hope she gets better with time as she posse's the most powerful gods power which is Gorilla. She was chosen for a reason and I like that there's lots of comedy scenes. There is romance and I really like to see romance plus comedy. I want to see Sophia to fight gracefully and always keep her head high.

Moreover, I feel they could make the animation much better then it would be more interesting, even if the story is good but if the animations is not that well then it's a turn off for me.

Ratings: 6.5

I understand what you mean at the beginning, I also like to see unique and special works in this anime industry. That's why I always look outside of the fantasy, action, and romance genres, even though they are genres that are quite exploited by repeated series. As for the story, I like that they mix romantic comedy with fantasy and a bit of drama at the end. It also has its moments of action, but nothing special. Honestly, from the beginning I assumed I wasn't going to expect much from this anime, starting with it being a fantasy and romantic comedy anime, I repeat. Also, I didn't expect anything special about the animation since it's from a studio I'm not familiar with. Once again, these kinds of works simply seek to tell the same old story, with a few minor changes here and there. If you expect too much from a copy of a copy of a copy, you're obviously going to be disappointed.

Good review.

I have seen worse but they still pay a lot attention to the animation and background characters. I don't know why in 2025 they would animate in such condition. Thanks, I am glad someone could understand what I was demanding, and you're right I should not expect from them.

They're called Low-Budget Adaptations. Normally, one would expect an adaptation to be high-quality, but that's not always the case due to budget. Sometimes the works they want to adapt don't sell more than a million copies, and they only manage to pay a low-budget studio to adapt them with a little money. This is mainly intended to increase sales of their original works. And in the fantasy genre this is seen in abundance.

Having been with this for the last two years, I can assure you that there are dozens and dozens of anime like this each season. That's why I always look for works that are more science fiction, adventure, drama, mystery, slice of life, or even sports.

Look good review to this anime, I saw his little trailer by a Spanish youtuber giving the anime of this season that is happening, it is the typical anime that do not expect much sincerely, just focus on comedy, romance and fantasy with a touch of drama. I don't say it for bad, in fact this kind of anime I like to watch it so I don't get bored of the same genres that one sees almost all the time, in fact I watch them when I have breakfast or dinner hehehehe.... but anyway, as you say with the issue that the animators or cartoonists do not put the eyes to the people who are in the background, sometimes that happens constantly, and it is not because of laziness, there are times that make the eyes are often difficult to draw and sometimes they do not want to give priority to them and focus on their main characters, in fact the most expensive in animation to do are the eyes and meals...
When it finishes its broadcasting I will watch it without problems
Good review and greetings.

I also do the same, I watch while eating everytime. It's not only about the eyes, it's about the importance of the other characters. I wish they had put some more efforts because it makes the scenario look realistic.

Thank you 🌷

Well, it also happens that the author of the manga doesn't draw the eyes or the faces of the characters in the background, and that gives the animators a big point in not wanting to do that too. But very few studios change those things. But I understand a little bit what you are saying.

I don't read manga a lot so don't have any idea, I have read few manhwa and they draw pretty well the background characters, I guess it varies author to author.

The idea actually sounds really fun. A shy girl who suddenly has the strength of a gorilla and has to hide it... I can imagine the comical situations that would come out of that.

But I totally understand what you're saying about the animation. Phew, what a bummer when that happens! The thing about faceless background characters is something that really takes me out of the story for me too; it feels like it was rushed. It's a shame, because from what you're saying, the plot and the characters do seem interesting. Thanks for the discovery and for your honest opinion.
