The Apothecary Diaries: Politics, Poison, and a Very Sharp-Witted Servant
The holiday went by really fast,I won't even lie. Happy Easter everyone... So I spent the weekend binge watching this one anime that has been on my watchlist for a very long time. I'm still watching black clover by the way, just had to hit pause for a while and watch this one, cause I got bored at one part.
The Apothecary Diaries begins not with glamour, but with captivity. Maomao, a sarcastic, brilliant young apothecary, is kidnapped from her quiet life in the red-light district and sold to work as a lowly servant in the rear palace of the imperial court. An apothecary is a person who prepares and sells medicine, using traditional and herbal methods.Surrounded by concubines, elegance, and a whole lot of gossip, Maomao intends to keep her head down and return home as soon as possible.

That plan goes out the window fast.
Early on, when two imperial babies suddenly fall ill under mysterious circumstances, Maomao, armed with nothing but her medical knowledge and a stubborn streak—quietly leaves anonymous notes pointing out the real cause: mercury poisoning from makeup. Her sharp thinking catches the attention of Jinshi, a high-ranking and suspiciously pretty court official (seriously, he gets mistaken for a woman more than once). Intrigued by her intellect and blunt honesty, Jinshi pulls her into the inner workings of palace life.
From there, Maomao is promoted to a lady-in-waiting, but really becomes more of an unofficial royal doctor-slash-detective. She uncovers medical mysteries, investigates poisonings, and navigates the deadly politics of the harem—all while trying not to get too involved (which, of course, she fails at spectacularly).
We meet characters like Lady Gyokuyou, a favored consort with a gentle heart, and Lady Lihua, a beautiful concubine with secrets of her own. Each arc presents a new mystery tied to court politics, class, or medicine—often with darker implications than they first appear.
The anime gracefully balances palace intrigue with Maomao’s dry wit and scientific curiosity. She’s not there to make friends or climb ranks—she just really, really wants to solve puzzles and maybe get back to mixing questionable herbal concoctions. And yet, she slowly becomes entangled in the politics she tries to avoid, especially as Jinshi keeps involving her in increasingly sensitive matters.
Themes of power, gender roles, knowledge, and survival run through the series, with Maomao’s cleverness acting as both her shield and sword. By the end of the season, hints about Jinshi’s true identity begin to unravel, and Maomao—reluctantly—starts to realize she might have a bigger role to play than she ever intended.

The Apothecary Diaries is a slow burn that contains a lot of details, subtle humor, and sharp observations. Don’t let the quiet tone fool youit’s a masterclass in mystery, medicine, and maneuvering in a world where one mistake could cost you everything...I guess.
Well,it was good while it lasted. Time to face the world again tomorrow.
Thanks for reading...

Wonderful anime, I love how the protagonist is solving the cases through her knowledge as an apothecary.

it's an excellent anime in several points, I've seen it twice, I love it hehe, good post!
Long live Maomao!!!!! Personally, I'm waiting for the second season to finish so I can binge-watch it. The first one was brilliant.
This is one of my favorite animes of last year, whether for its excellent animation, its interesting story, its unique and entertaining characters or for the natural way of mixing humor with mystery and suspense at the same time. I'm quite fascinated by these types of works, but I'm even more fascinated by their openings.
Good review.
