Of all the anime related to drama and mystery, I haven't found one that has hooked me as much as this anime did. As I've surely mentioned before, these genres are commonly not as popular or commercial in this industry. However, this anime adaptation caused many to take notice of a work with interesting yet disturbing stories, characters that are hard not to empathize with and secrets that leave you with a head full of questions. Its success has been so notorious that it has been nominated for awards such as "Best Anime of the Year", for example. Undoubtedly, this work has a lot to offer to a much larger audience than usual. And that's not to mention that it has a quality... an aesthetic and visual superiority that has no equal. Animated by the same studio that produced one of the greatest anime in history (that's right, I'm talking about Pokemon), it is to be expected a level of quality and visual details above the ordinary. But we'll talk about that in more detail at the end.

Let's start first talking about its story, which seems to be inspired by the ancient Imperial China of the Tang dynasty with some Ming dynasty. A fictional country with a powerful emperor with concubines, ladies-in-waiting, eunuchs and a whole special staff gathered in the famous Emperor's Palace. We already know Maomao, a young girl who has lived almost all her life in one of the lowest and most dangerous neighborhoods of this fictitious country and who, under the care and upbringing of her grandfather, takes on the work of an apothecary with more than notorious knowledge and experience in herbs and medicines of all kinds. Being sold as a slave to work in this huge palace, our protagonist will be known to the Emperor's close staff and will later be bought by Jinshi, a supposed eunuch and manager of this place. Her days in this huge and complex palace will be full of incidents, deaths, assassinations, attacks and many other secrets related to the royal family and their relatives.

De todos los animes relacionados al drama y al misterio, no he encontrado uno que me haya enganchado tanto como lo hizo este anime. Como seguramente ya he mencionado antes, estos géneros comúnmente no son tan populares ni comerciales en esta industria. Sin embargo, esta adaptación animada causó que muchos se fijaran en una obra con historias interesantes y a la vez inquietantes, personajes que son difíciles no empatizar con ellos y secretos que te dejan con la cabeza repleta de preguntas. Su éxito ha sido tan notorio que ha tenido nominaciones en premios como “Mejor Anime del Año”, por ejemplo. Sin lugar a dudas, esta obra tiene mucho para ofrecer a un público mucho más grande de lo común. Y eso sin mencionar qur tiene una calidad… una superioridad estética y visual que no tiene igual. Animada por el mismo estudio que produjo uno de los animes más grandes de toda la historia (así es, hablo de Pokemon), es de esperarse un nivel de calidad y detalles visuales por encima de lo normal. Empecemos primero hablando de su historia, la cual parece estar inspirada en la antigua China Imperial de la época de la dinastía Tang con algo de la dinastía Ming. Un país ficticio con un poderoso emperador con concubinas, damas de compañía, eunucos y todo un personal especial reunido en el famoso Palacio del Emperador. Ya conocemos a Maomao, una joven que ha vivido casi toda su vida en uno de los barrios más bajos y peligrosos de este ficticio país y que, al cuidado y crianza de su abuelo, adopta la labor de boticaria con conocimientos y experiencia más que notoria en hierbas y medicinas de todo tipo. Al ser vendida como esclava para trabajar en este enorme palacio, nuestra protagonista se dará a conocer ante el personal cercano del Emperador y será comprada posteriormente por Jinshi, un supuesto eunuco y encargado de este lugar. Sus días en este enorme y complejo palacio estará repleto de casos de incidentes, muertes, asesinatos, atentados y muchos otros secretos relacionados a la familia real y sus allegados.

As we can notice, this work is very different from many anime of the genre that I have known and talked about so far. Its oriental cultural mix and the way in which they build a whole country ruled by a powerful emperor is the first thing that jumps to the eye. But what we will see most in all its episodes are cases related to the staff of the Emperor's Inner Palace. We also meet the different concubines and their ladies-in-waiting, as well as other equally notorious and interesting characters (as is the case of Jinshi). What I like about all this is that the play takes its time to develop the story very well, while focusing a lot on the incidents within the palace and the secrets behind each important member. While for many this may be something slow and boring, personally I am fascinated by how they develop everything so well with a level of quality and detail that has no comparison. All this without losing the emotion and interest that is transmitted in each episode.

I repeat, finding a perfect mix of mystery, drama and even comedy is something very, very difficult to achieve in this huge industry. Usually works like these are forgotten by fans as well as by the creators themselves who leave the production of such works after a resounding failure. But in this case I believe that the impossible has been achieved since we are in front of a perfect work in terms of story, well done characters and a mixture of drama, mystery and humor that has no comparison. The good thing about all this is that they know how to give their time to each thing, without hindering epic moments with jokes or leaving out secrets to be forgotten with time. Regarding the latter I think this anime manages to develop its story so well that every event, every detail, every feature, character, object and its meaning has such a significant value and importance in the end that it's hard not to let anything go unnoticed. Obviously, its characters (especially its protagonist) have a great influence in this regard.

Como podemos notar, esta obra es muy distinta a muchos animes del género que he conocido y hablado hasta ahora. Su mezcla cultural oriental y la forma en la que construyen todo un país regido por un poderoso emperador es lo primero que salta a la vista. Pero lo que más veremos en todos sus episodios son casos relacionados al personal del Palacio Interior del Emperador. También conocemos a las diferentes concubinas y sus damas de compañía, amén de otros personajes igual de notorios e interesantes (como es el caso de Jinshi). Lo que me gusta de todo esto es que la obra se toma su tiempo para desarrollar muy bien dicha historia, a su vez que se enfocan mucho en los casos de incidentes dentro del palacio y los secretos que hay detrás de cada miembro importante. Si bien para muchos esto puede ser algo lento y aburrido, en lo personal me fascina mucho el cómo desarrollan tan bien todo con un nivel de calidad y detalles que no tiene comparación. Todo esto sin perder la emoción e interés que transmite en cada episodio.

Repito, encontrarse con una mezcla perfecta de misterio, drama e incluso comedia es algo muy pero muy difícil de conseguir en esta enorme industria. Normalmente obras como estas quedan en el olvido tanto por los fans como también por los mismos creadores que dejan de lado la producción de dichas obras luego de un fracaso rotundo. Pero en este caso creo que se ha logrado lo imposible ya que estamos ante una obra perfecta en cuanto a historia, personajes bien hechos y una mezcla de drama, misterio y humor que no tiene comparación. Lo bueno de todo esto es que saben cómo darle su tiempo a cada cosa, sin obstaculizar momentos épicos con chistes o dejar de lado secretos para que sean olvidados con el tiempo. Con respecto a esto último creo que este anime consigue desarrollar tan bien su historia que cada acontecimiento, cada detalle, cada rasgo, personaje, objeto y su significado tiene un valor e importancia tan significativos al final que es difícil no dejar pasar desapercibido nada. Evidentemente, sus personajes (en especial su protagonista) tienen una gran influencia en este respecto.

Another character that is very hard to ignore is Jinshi, the supposed eunuch and caretaker of the Emperor's Palace. Beginning the play, he seems to be a character who may come from a high lineage, despite now fulfilling a humble position of servitude such as being a eunuch. However, his way of speaking, acting and leading within the palace casts doubt on all of the above. That and his inevitable physical appearance that is not at all comparable to any other man now in this huge place. The secrets behind this iconic character who serves the Emperor's concubines will be revealed little by little in this series, even more so in this second season where it will focus more on his secrets and those of the royal family, even. On the other hand, there are also things that can be clearly noticed, such as the feelings he has with Maomao, a simple apothecary and servant of one of the Emperor's favorite concubines. Yes, there is even some romance in this anime, it seems.

These are cases that bring out the nastiest and most disgusting side of the human being. Themes such as revenge, hatred, envy and rancor are just a few notable points in this regard. That's why, despite having a somewhat innocent and sometimes adult humor, this anime is clearly not for everyone. Still, I recommend this anime to any fan of the drama and mystery genre.

Last but not least, let's talk about the technical and visual aspect of this anime. As I mentioned above, this series was produced and animated by two studios, one of them being OLM, a giant deservedly recognized in this industry for animating popular works such as Pokemon, among others. Its visual and aesthetic quality is a clear example of this. Visual details, character designs, quality and fluidity in its animation are just some of the many good things we can find in this work. It is no small thing to say that a drama and mystery anime like this has a quality that can compete even with other much more famous anime (remember that it was nominated along with anime such as Solo Leveling, Frieren and Dungeon Meshi). And at the moment of truth, its animation and audiovisual aspect stand out quite well, despite being a work that mostly does not have intense or moving moments. But we still have scenarios that are wonderful to look at.

The same can be said of its visual and sound effects, which are well done to a certain extent and do their job very well. Its soundtrack, on the other hand, is one of the best things this anime has to offer. It manages to give it emotion and elevate the moments of drama and mystery to a higher level, besides setting the mood of its episodes very well, which are not few (just remind you that its first season has 25 episodes, the same seems to be going to happen with this new season). As for its Openings and Endings, they are the best I've heard of an anime to date. Some openings are even some of my favorites of the year for their rhythm, visual aesthetics and music in general. In short, this anime is perfect for anyone who likes stories that make you think with characters that are hard to forget.

Personally, I give it a well-deserved 9.5/10 rating for the drama and mystery genre.

Más en lo que respecta a esta segunda temporada, veremos la aparición de nuevos personajes que terminarán convirtiéndose en los enemigos principales del emperador y de la protagonista. Sin entrar tanto en detalles y así dar spoilers, solo diré que una de las sirvientas y concubinas más misteriosas de todo el palacio tendrán mucho en común. Lo que me gusta de todo esto es que, aparte de desarrollar de una forma tan precisa y especial a cada uno de sus personajes, este anime también cumple con causar cierto impacto en su audiencia al mostrarnos el “lado oscuro” y perturbador de la vida de este palacio y de los anteriores emperadores que existieron en en este gran reino. Estos son casos que ponen en evidencia el lado más desagradable y asqueroso del ser humano. Temas como la venganza, el odio, la envidia y el rencor son solo algunos puntos notables en este respecto. Es por eso que, a pesar de tener un humor un tanto inocente y a veces para adultos, este anime no es para todo el mundo, claramente. Aún así, este anime se lo recomiendo a todo fan del género del drama y el misterio.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado técnico y visual de este anime. Como ya les mencioné arriba, esta serie fue producida y animada por dos estudios, siendo uno de estos OLM, un gigante merecidamente reconocido en esta industria por animar obras populares como Pokemon, entre otras. Su calidad visual y estética es una clara muestra de esto. Detalles visuales, diseños de personajes, calidad y fluidez en su animación son solo algunas de las muchas cosas buenas que podemos encontrar en esta obra. No es poca cosa el decir que un anime de drama y misterio como este tenga una calidad que puede competir inclusive con otras mucho más famosas (recordemos que estuvo nominada junto con animes como Solo Leveling, Frieren y Dungeon Meshi). Y es que al momento de la verdad, su animación y aspecto audiovisual resaltan bastante bien, a pesar de ser una obra que mayormente no tiene momentos intensos o movidos. Pero aún así tenemos escenarios que son maravillosos a la vista.

Lo mismo se puede decir de sus efectos visuales y de sonido, los cuales están bien hechos hasta cierto punto y cumplen muy bien con su trabajo. Su banda sonora, por otro lado, es una de las mejores cosas que tiene este anime para ofrecer. Consigue darle emoción y elevar los momentos de drama y misterio a un nivel más alto, además de ambientar muy bien sus episodios, los cuales no son pocos (con solo recordarles que su primera temporada tiene 25 episodios, lo mismo parece va a suceder con esta nueva temporada). En lo que respecta a sus Openings y Endings, son los mejores que he escuchado de un animes hasta la fecha de hoy. Algunos openings son incluso de mis favoritos del año por su ritmo, estética visual y su música en general. En resumen, este anime es perfecto para todos los que les gustan las historias que los pongan a pensar con personajes difíciles de olvidar.

Personalmente, le doy una merecida calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de drama y misterio.
