A complete audiovisual spectacle full of perfectly animated choreographies, excellent visual effects, impressive explosions, demonstrations of totally absurd powers and battles that leave you literally breathless. All this and more is what this series has to give. However, as it usually happens with most anime that become so popular overnight, Solo Leveling is one of those works that lacks a lot of depth in terms of its characters and originality in terms of its story. This, clearly, has caused it to receive negative reviews from its audience.

To get right into this, I think it's superfluous to go back to what many know what this anime is about. It's practically the typical protagonist who starts out as a weakling, the weakest of them all, but is suddenly given a certain power that helps him become stronger and stronger until he becomes practically invincible. That, in a nutshell, is the exact description of what Sung Jinwoo is. As for the story, it's practically "the hero's way", facing various strong enemies, defeating them after a great battle and then gaining more power as he levels up (being the only one who can do it, that's why it's called "Solo Leveling" then). Beyond this there is not much to talk about, the truth, since its story is so superficial and simple to know that all our attention is taken by the audiovisual spectacle that shows us from beginning to end. That is why what we will see most in this new season are battles and non-stop action, as well as an incalculable demonstration of power by the protagonist, of course.

Y es que no hay nada mejor que ver un anime muy bien producido y con una animación que te deja literalmente con la boca abierta. Un completo espectáculo audiovisual repleto de coreografías perfectamente animadas, excelentes efectos visuales, explosiones impresionantes, demostraciones de poderes totalmente absurdos y batallas que te dejan literalmente sin aliento. Todo esto y más es lo que tiene esta serie para dar. Sin embargo, como sucede normalmente con la mayoría de animes que se vuelven tan populares de un día para el otro, Solo Leveling es de esas obras que carecen mucho de profundidad en cuanto a sus personajes y originalidad en cuanto a su historia. Esto, claramente, ha hecho que reciba críticas negativas de su público.

Para entrar de lleno en esto, creo que está de más volver a hablar de lo que muchos saben de qué trata este anime. Prácticamente es el típico protagonista que empieza siendo un débil, el más débil de todos, pero que de repente se le otorga cierto poder que lo ayuda a ser cada vez más y más fuerte hasta que se vuelve prácticamente invencible. Eso, en resumidas cuentas, es la descripción exacta de lo que es Sung Jinwoo. The common thing is to get the typical work that replicates "The hero's way", only with another name and a different vision, plus one or another detail without more. Sometimes it seems that they don't even try to do something original on their own and just try to satisfy the audience by giving them what they want: action, strong characters, incredible battles and fanservice, even.

That's why it doesn't surprise me to see Solo Leveling win an award as "Best Anime of the Year" recently with works like Frieren, Dungeon Meshi or Chi. But in an industry where numbers make the difference, you can't expect original and worthwhile works to make it with so much hype and demand for generic and quickly consumable content. It's a low blow, myself included, as I was also one of those who at first preferred to watch something shorter, quicker and easier to understand and entertain me. Now, with an unstoppable amount of new products, new works and new series constantly being produced and broadcasted, it is normal that quality is increasingly overshadowed by quantity. On the other hand, I also consider the fact that no matter how inauthentic and complex it may be, a work should not be considered bad either. Sometimes you just want to tell a story that is entertaining and that fulfills everything you are looking for in a certain area. Like a romantic comedy or a fantasy story, they always manage to cover the superficial and thus succeed and that's it.

Y no es que me queje de esto, ya que en cuanto a entretenimiento no siempre se puede optar por algo bien elaborado y a la vez original y que te deje reflexionando. La mayoría de la gente prefiere buscar algo que sea entretenido, más que nada. Es por eso que muchos animes populares carecen de protagonistas con desarrollos de personajes profundos o historias que te dejen con el corazón en la mano. Es una sorpresa encontrarse con esto dentro del género de acción o de fantasía actualmente (como es el caso de My Hero Academia que cumple con dar muy buenos personajes y una historia que te atrapa por lo auténtica que es, pero estoy hablando de una obra de hace casi una década atrás). Lo común es conseguir la típica obra que replica “el camino del héroe”, sólo que con otro nombre y con una visión diferente, además de uno que otro detalle sin más. A veces parece que ni siquiera se esmeran en hacer algo original por su propia cuenta y solo buscan satisfacer al público dándoles lo que quieren: acción, personajes fuertes, batallas increíbles y fanservice, inclusive.

Es por esto que no me sorprende ver que Solo Leveling se haya llevado un premio como “El Mejor Anime del Año” recientemente teniendo obras como Frieren, Dungeon Meshi o Chi inclusive. Pero en una industria en la que los números marcan la diferencia no se puede esperar que obras originales y que valen la pena ser reconocidas lo logren con tanta farándula y demanda de contenido genérico y rápidamente consumible. Es un golpe bajo, incluyéndome ya que yo al principio era también de los que prefería ver algo más corto, más rápido y más fácil de entender y entretenerme. Ahora, con una cantidad incontenible de nuevos productos, nuevas obras y nuevas series produciéndose y emitiéndose constantemente es normal que la calidad cada vez se vea más opacada por la cantidad. While other series like Sakamoto Days comply with being both entertaining and funny, with characters you can easily empathize with; Solo Leveling complies with just giving us a protagonist that gets stronger and stronger in each chapter. The same happens with the enemies we see in this new season, which only manage to grab our attention in just one or two chapters until they are defeated by Jinwoo, who after each battle becomes more and more invincible. Yes, it's like a copy of One Punch Man, although Saitama has better developed enemies than this South Korean copy, truth be told. And I repeat, I don't say all this to qualify this work as bad or uninteresting, I just make clear my opinion as someone who has already seen many "Shōnen" and action anime since I was little, practically.

En este caso, Solo Leveling cumple con darnos una historia en la que la fantasía típica de cazadores y mazmorras con monstruos se mezclan entre sí, con un nivel de acción sin precedentes. Lo mismo sucede con los enemigos que vemos en esta nueva temporada, los cuales solo consiguen acaparar la atención nomás en uno o dos capítulos hasta que son derrotados por Jinwoo, quien luego de cada batalla se vuelve más y más invencible. Si, es como una copia de One Punch Man, aunque Saitama tiene enemigos mejores desarrollados que esta copia surcoreana, la vedad. Y repito, no digo todo esto para calificar esta obra como mala o poco interesante, solo dejo claro mi opinión como alguien que ya ha visto muchos animes “Shōnen” y de acción desde que era pequeño, prácticamente.

The animation, the character designs, the incredible fluidity, the visual details, the drawing style, the visual effects, the movements, the choreographies and the high level battles are just some of the excellently done things we can see in this anime. I think it is no exaggeration when I say that what we will find in this season is one of the best you will be able to enjoy in terms of animation nowadays. The same goes for the sound effects and the soundtrack it has, most of all the background music in battle scenes that manage to elevate everything to the next level. And with this we must add the Opening and Ending, which manage to give us an equally fascinating show with catchy rhythms, as expected. I can say that the only good thing this anime has to offer is its audiovisual aspect. Recommended for any action fan who wants to entertain themselves and take their brains out for a while.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 as far as the action/fantasy genre is concerned.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual y técnico que tiene Solo Leveling. En esto solo puedo dar mis mejores impresiones gracias al excelente trabajo que realizó A-1 Pictures, como siempre. La animación, los diseños de los personajes, la increíble fluidez, los detalles visuales, el estilo de dibujo, los efectos visuales, los movimientos, las coreografías y las batallas de alto nivel son solo algunas de las cosas excelentemente hechas que podemos ver en este anime. Creo que no es exageración cuando digo que lo que encontraremos en esta temporada es de lo mejor que podrán disfrutar en cuanto a animación se refiere actualmente. Lo mismo sucede con los efectos de sonido y la banda sonora que tiene, más que nada la musicalización de fondo en escenas de batallas que consiguen elevar todo a un siguiente nivel. Y con esto hay que agregar lo del Opening y Ending, los cuales logran darnos un espectáculo igual de fascinante con ritmos pegadizos, como era de esperarse. Puedo decir que lo único bueno que tiene para ofrecer este anime es su aspecto audiovisual nomás. Recomendada para todo fan de la acción que quiera entretenerse y descontar su cerebro por un buen rato.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de acción y fantasía.
