Even to this day I still wonder why I spent time watching a fishing anime like this one. But when I remember what its plot and characters are about I clearly realize why. While it's not one of the best sports anime I've seen to date (and I've seen very few), I must admit that in terms of visuals and storytelling it's quite an enjoyable piece of work. Clearly, it is not like the famous work Blue Box since this one does not focus on romance, but rather on a curious mixture of drama with light comedy, possibly. And the way the story is told along with the way the characters are developed by introducing narrative elements that make you think about simple yet indispensable things in life is what makes this anime special, at least for me. As a fan of any kind of well-made work, it is a pleasure to have enjoyed this series which is obviously not for everyone.

Aún al día de hoy sigo preguntándome el por qué le dediqué tiempo a ver un anime de pesca como este. Pero cuando recuerdo de qué va su trama y sus personajes me doy cuenta claramente del motivo. Si bien no es de los mejores animes de deportes que he visto hasta la fecha (y eso que he visto muy pocos), sí debo de admitir que en cuanto a lo visual y narrativo es una obra bastante disfrutable. Claramente, no es como la famosa obra Blue Box ya que este no se centra en el romance, sino más bien en una curiosa mezcla de drama con comedia ligera, posiblemente. Y es que la manera en la que nos cuentan la historia junto con la forma de desarrollar a sus personajes introduciendo elementos narrativos que te ponen a pensar en cosas tanto simples como a la vez indispensables en la vida es lo que hace especial a este anime, al menos para mí. Como fanático de cualquier tipo de obra bien hecha, es un placer haber disfrutado de esta serie que obviamente no es para todo el mundo.

As I told you above, the story revolves around the tragic life of Tsunehiro Sasaki, who with so many problems and with only two years of life, is a young college student who spends his time in debt while living alone to avoid getting involved in social habits or customs. That is why with what he receives from his parents he subsists by living in rooms and staying away from society to avoid any kind of humiliation. Still, after having his life saved by a couple of young fishermen, he feels gratitude and gives them a chance to trust them and share a moment of peace and tranquility while he learns to fish. However, we also learn that fishing is not just any easy hobby to pursue and we see how our protagonist slowly learns the basics as they spend time together with their new group of friends and fishing lovers. But his harsh reality, his debts due to the loans he took and his illness will not leave him alone, so he will look for a way to face such problems with the help of his new friends.

I suppose that some of you who read this post will find this premise interesting, mostly because of the main character and his tragic story. That very thing was what motivated me to watch it to the end and, while it didn't quite live up to my expectations at the time, it did manage to entertain me enough to be a simple Spokon anime. Leaving aside the fishing theme, which in this anime is what we will see 90% of the time, I would like to mention the way the characters in this story are developed. Personally, it is already common to see cases of anime with protagonists or characters that always have a certain traumatic past or a life so tragic or short for their age. For some reason, tragic stories of this style abound in Japan, which makes it a habit to see them in most of the works that are currently broadcasted. Of course, I mention this being in the drama category, but in the sports category it is not normal to see an anime as emotional and deep as this one. That's why this anime is so special because it develops its characters so well.

Como ya les conté arriba, la historia gira en torno a la trágica vida de Tsunehiro Sasaki, quien con tantos problemas y con tan solo dos años de vida, es un joven universitario que se la pasa endeudado mientras vive solo para evitar envolverse en hábitos o costumbres sociales. Es por eso que con lo que recibe de sus padres subsiste viviendo en habitaciones y alejándose de la sociedad para evitar cualquier tipo de humillación. Aún así, luego de que le salvarán la vida un par de jóvenes pescadores, siente gratitud y les da una oportunidad de confiar en ellos y compartir un momento de paz y tranquilidad mientras aprende a pescar. Supongo que para algunos de los que lean este post le resulte interesante esta premisa, más que nada por el protagonista y su trágica historia. Eso mismo fue lo que me motivó a verla hasta el final y, si bien no llegó a ser lo que esperaba en su momento, sí logró entretenerme lo suficiente para ser un simple anime Spokon. Dejando de lado el tema de la pesca que, en este anime es lo que veremos en el 90% de las veces, me gustaría mencionar la forma en la que desarrollan a los personajes de esta historia. En lo personal ya es común ver casos de animes con protagonistas o personajes que siempre poseen cierto pasado traumático o una vida tan trágica o corta para su edad. Por alguna razón en Japón abundan mucho las historias trágicas de este estilo, lo cual hace que ya sea una costumbre verlas en la mayoría de obras que se emiten actualmente. Claro, esto lo menciono estando dentro de la categoría de drama, pero en la de deportes no es normal ver un anime tan emocional y profundo como este. Es por esto que llega a ser tan especial esta obra por desarrollar tan bien a sus personajes.

As he learns to fish, our young college student begins to get closer to those who saved him and becomes his new friend and fishing companion. It is here that we see the character's emotional change or evolution as he gets to experience so closely what it is like to have company and enjoy such simple things as fishing or eating with his new friends.

As quiet as this play seems, it is interesting to see what life is like for a young man who doesn't have much time to live and decides to spend it with his new friends fishing and eating. We also learn about some of the other characters and how fishing helped them cope and overcome various difficulties in their lives. We also learn the value of friendship, responsibility, the consequences of misusing money and how terrible it is to get into debt or lose money due to a mistake or fraud. There are several lessons that we can extract from the different themes that one can find in this fishing anime, really. And while it is true that you can learn a few interesting things about this sport, the way in which the practice of fishing is used as a method to develop a story so complete and full of feelings and exciting moments is what I like most about this anime. That's not to mention the kind of humor it has, which is not stale or teenage humor with bad double-entendre jokes, fanservice or awkward and unnecessary moments. It's a nice and easy to digest humor if you like this kind of works, of course.

Empezando por su protagonista, Tsunehiro Sasaki, nos lo presentan como un joven muy poco sociable que acostumbra a estar encerrado mientras se endeuda con temas de apuestas y préstamos de muy alto costo. Luego de recibir la terrible noticia de su enfermedad terminal decide restarle importancia a su vida o su futuro del cual no ha pensado mucho desde que entró a la universidad. Ya estando en lo más hondo de su lamentable vida es cuando recibe la ayuda por parte de un pequeño grupo de desconocidos y amantes de la pesca. Lo que me gusta de este anime es la forma en la que nos ilustra dicho evento de manera tan visual cuando el protagonista se hunde en el mar y lo salvan de ahogarse en las profundidades. Ahora con un nuevo hobby por aprender como lo es la pesca, este dedica gran parte de su tiempo a este tipo de deporte no tan profesional. Mientras aprende a pescar, nuestro joven universitario empieza a juntarse más con los que lo salvaron y se vuelve su nuevo amigo y compañero de pesca. Es aquí donde vemos el cambio o evolución emocional del personaje al llegar a experimentar tan de cerca lo que es tener compañía y disfrutar de cosas tan sencillas como pescar o comer con sus nuevos amigos.

Por muy tranquilo que parezca esta obra, es interesante ver cómo es la vida de un joven que no tiene mucho tiempo de vida y que decide pasarla con sus nuevos amigos pescando y comiendo. También conocemos el caso de algunos otros personajes y de cómo la pesca los ayudó a sobrellevar y superar diversas dificultades en sus vidas. También aprendemos el valor de la amistad, la responsabilidad, las consecuencias del mal uso del dinero y de lo terrible que es endeudarse o de perder dinero por algún error o fraude. Son varias las lecciones que podemos extraer de los diferentes temas que uno puede encontrarse en este anime de pesca, la verdad. Y si bien es cierto que se puede aprender unas cuantas cosas interesantes sobre este deporte, la forma en la que se utiliza la práctica de la pesca como método para desarrollar una historia tan completa y repleta de sentimientos y momentos emocionantes es lo que más me gusta de este anime. Eso sin mencionar el tipo de humor que tiene, el cual no es un humor rancio o de adolescentes con chistes malos de doble sentido, fanservice o momentos incómodos e innecesarios. Es un humor agradable y fácil de digerir si te gustan este tipo de obras, por supuesto.

Last but not least, let's talk about the technical and visual aspect of this anime. Being from the same studio that animated one of my favorite Isekais of all time, it is understandable that it has a level of visual quality far above many known Spokon anime. Leaving aside the animation style it has, which although it has a somewhat "special" way of animating the characters; we must admit that the level of detail and fluidity in most of its episodes is to be highly valued. There is also the use of 3D in planes or scenarios with backgrounds and landscapes very well done and attractive to the eye. The way of drawing scenarios of the city, the sea, the fish and many other details are very noticeable and pleasant to watch. The color palette is also variable and very well usable, added with the excellent use of shadows and lights with changes of environment and landscapes. The soundtrack is also remarkable, not so much for its sound effects that, although they are well done, do not call much attention as it does its musical themes, background and ambient music. In short, this is an anime for lovers of quiet but at the same time emotional stories.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 as far as the sports and drama genre is concerned.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado técnico y visual que tiene este anime. Siendo del mismo estudio que animó uno de mis Isekais favoritos de toda la historia, es de entender que tenga un nivel de calidad visual muy por encima de muchos animes Spokon conocidos. Dejando de lado el estilo de animación que tiene, que si bien tiene una forma un tanto “especial” de animar a los personajes; hay que admitir que el nivel de detalles y fluidez en la mayoría de sus episodios es de valorarse bastante. Además está el uso del 3D en planos o escenarios con fondos y paisajes muy bien hechos y atractivos a la vista. La forma de dibujar escenarios de la ciudad, el mar, los peces y muchos otros detalles se notan mucho y es agradable de ver. La paleta de colores es también variable y muy bien utilizable, sumado con el uso excelente de sombras y luces con cambios de ambiente y paisajes. La banda sonora es también destacable, no tanto por sus efectos de sonido que, aunque estén bien hechos no llaman mucho la atención como lo hace sus temas musicales, su música de fondo y de ambiente. En resumen, este es un anime para los amantes de historias tranquilas pero a la vez emotivas.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8.5/10 en lo que respecta al género del deporte y el drama.
