Normally, when I talk about Slice of Life anime, I tend to highlight how calm and slow most of their stories are, but in this case, I don't think the same concept applies. I'm not saying this because it has a story full of drama or action or anything like that; it's still Slice of Life, but with a much more cheerful and lively humor and pace than usual. Mono combines various elements such as photography, manga, cinema, travel, the supernatural, and popular culture. To say that it has one or two slow episodes would be a lie, literally. It's not the craziest and most frenetic thing you'll see today, but it does strike a nice balance.

Before giving you my opinion, I want to mention an interesting detail about this type of anime. It's not surprising that these animated works are common, where the protagonists are always women who we see doing a variety of ordinary things. In Slice of Life, it's very common to see this, especially in recent decades where there has been a notable growth in this type of series. Whatever the reason, it's true that these anime with their rather cute styles and somewhat absurd humor are among the most consumable in this industry. The most ironic and interesting thing about all this is that both this anime and many others of this style are Seinen demographic, meaning they are aimed at a slightly more adult audience.

Normalmente cuando hablo de animes Slice of Life suelo destacar lo tranquilas y lentas que son la mayoría de sus historias, pero en esta ocasión no creo que se aplique el mismo concepto. No lo digo porque tenga una historia repleta de drama o acción ni nada parecido; sigue siendo Slice of Life, pero solamente que con un humor y un ritmo mucho más alegre y movido de lo usual. Mono combina varios elementos como lo es la fotografía, el manga, el cine, los viajes, lo sobrenatural y la cultura popular. Decir que tiene uno o dos episodios lentos es mentir, literalmente. Tampoco es que sea lo más alocado y frenético que verás hoy, pero sí consigue un equilibrio agradable.

Antes de darles mi opinión, quiero mencionarles un detalle interesante sobre este tipo de animes. No es de extrañar que sean comunes estas obras animadas donde los protagonistas siempre son mujeres que vemos hacer una variedad de cosas comunes y corrientes. En el Slice of Life es muy común ver esto, sobre todo en estas últimas décadas donde se ha visto un crecimiento notable de este tipo de series. Sea cual sea la razón, es cierto que estos animes con estilos bastante tiernos y un humor un tanto absurdo son de lo más consumible en esta industria. Lo más irónico e interesante de todo esto es que tanto este anime como muchos otros de este estilo son de demografía Seinen, es decir, están dirigidos a un público un poco más adulto.

I honestly don't know what underlying themes or deeper issues this particular anime deals with, since its story is basically about three high school students who are members of a film and photography club and go on a trip around the country with a young manga artist who uses them as inspiration for her work. The series boils down to trips, recreations, tours, sights, breathtaking landscapes, and sources of inspiration for stories, manga, photographs, and even movies. As I said before, it doesn't have a particularly deep story, but it's not so superficial as to be completely ignored either. In one way or another, it has its charm for a certain target audience.

Personally, I admit that I had a lot of fun watching this anime from the beginning of its broadcast thanks to its interesting plot and quite attractive animation style. But before talking about the audiovisual aspect, which is surely its strongest point, I want to highlight the special way this series introduces and builds random characters in a way that captures your attention. To begin with, there is the protagonist, Satsuki Amamiya, who joined the Photography Club solely because of her admiration for the president. When she graduates, Satsuki loses her only reason for staying in the club. But she still decides to look for a new source of inspiration for her photographs.

Sinceramente no sé qué trasfondos o temas profundos trate este anime en particular ya que su historia trata -en resumidas cuentas- de tres estudiantes de preparatoria que son miembros de un club dedicado al cine y la fotografía que van de viaje por distintas partes del país junto con la compañía de una joven mangaka que las utiliza como inspiración para sus obras. La serie se reduce en viajes, recreaciones, recorridos, vistas, paisajes impresionantes y fuentes de inspiración para historias, mangas, fotografías y hasta películas. Como dije antes, no tiene una historia ni tan profunda, pero tampoco tan superficial como para ser ignorada por completo. De alguna manera u otra tiene su encanto para cierto público objetivo.

Yo en lo personal admito que me divertí mucho viendo este anime desde el principio de su emisión gracias a su trama interesante y su estilo de animación bastante atractivo. Pero antes de hablar de lo audiovisual, que seguramente sería su punto más fuerte, quiero destacar la manera tan especial que tiene esta serie de introducir y construir personajes randoms de una manera que consigue captar tu atención. Para empezar, está la protagonista Satsuki Amamiya quien se unió al Club de Fotografía solo por la admiración que le tenía a la presidenta. Cuando ella se gradúa, Satsuki pierde su único motivo para seguir en ese club. Pero aún así decide buscar una nueva fuente de inspiración para sus fotografías.

An Kiriyama is her best friend and also a member of the Photography Club. She is the one who encourages Satsuki to seek out new sources of inspiration. Her cheerful and fun personality helps the protagonist try new things, such as traveling to different tourist destinations around the country or seeking inspiration in cities, mountains, and rivers. Clearly, she also has a rebellious side where she just wants to have fun. We also have Haruno Akiyama, the young manga artist who sold them the 360-degree camera. She is usually locked in her room drawing, eating, or drinking. She is not very sociable, but from time to time she goes on trips to seek inspiration with her new friends.

Both these characters and the other secondary characters we will meet in this anime have their own unique personalities and appeal. They don't have remarkable character development, but it's easy to empathize with each one. The plot also helps to build relationships and friendships that we will see throughout the series. Apparently, one of the messages this anime tries to convey is the importance of finding motivation or a goal in our lives. It also promotes enjoying youth and the good things we have every day. Going out, traveling, or being with your friends and those things that I don't even remember anymore.

An Kiriyama es su mejor amiga y también compañera del Club de Fotografía. Ella es la que anima a Satsuki a buscar una nueva fuente de inspiración. Su personalidad alegre y divertida ayuda a la protagonista a probar cosas nuevas como viajar por distintas partes turísticas del país o buscar fuentes de inspiración en ciudades, montañas y ríos. Claramente, tiene también su lado rebelde en el que solo piensa divertirse nomás. También tenemos a Haruno Akiyama, la joven mangaka que les vendió la cámara de 360 grados. Ella suele estar casi siempre encerrada en su cuarto dibujando, comiendo o bebiendo. No es muy sociable, pero de vez en cuando sale de viaje para buscar inspiración junto con sus nuevas compañeras.

Tanto estas como los demás personajes secundarios que iremos conociendo en este anime tienen su personalidad y atractivo particulares. No tienen un desarrollo de personajes que sea destacable, pero se consigue empatizar muy bien con cada uno. La trama también ayuda a construir relaciones y amistades que iremos viendo a lo largo de la serie. Por lo visto, uno de los mensajes que nos intenta transmitir este anime es sobre la importancia de buscar una motivación o un objetivo en nuestras vidas. También promueve el disfrutar de la juventud y de las cosas buenas que uno tiene día a día. El salir, ir de viaje o estar con tus amigos y esas cosas que yo ya ni recuerdo.

Another interesting detail about this anime is the way it adds supernatural elements such as ghosts and haunted places. Normally, these are attributed to a particular character who is dedicated to such things in this story. But it is interesting how this blends in very well with japanese culture and current popular culture. Although they are pure parodies, there are a few episodes that stand out because they focus mainly on these themes. Clearly, all of this has a very pleasant level of humor, but it is not exaggerated or overly absurd. Personally, I really like the style of humor in this anime.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of this anime. For a relatively new and unknown studio, I admire that they have done one of the best jobs of animation and adaptation that I have seen this year, without exaggeration. I say this not only because of the attractive drawing style, which is very faithful to the manga, but also because of how fluid and detailed it is. The light tones, the vivid color palette, the use of light and shadow, the expressions, the visual effects, the panoramic and 360° views are absolutely wonderful. The sound effects are good, but nothing compares to the soundtrack, which is very moving, contagious, and uplifting. A Slice of Life masterpiece that is well worth watching.

Personally, I give it a 10/10 rating in terms of the comedy and Slice of Life genres.

Otro detalle interesante que tiene este anime es la forma en la que agrega elementos sobrenaturales como lo son los fantasmas o los lugares embrujados. Normalmente, estos se le atribuyen a un personaje en particular que se dedica a esas cosas en esta historia. Pero es interesante cómo esto se mezcla muy bien con la cultura japonesa y la cultura popular actual. Si bien son puras parodias, hay uno que otro episodio que llama la atención al dedicarse mayormente a estos temas. Claramente, todo esto posee un nivel de humor bastante agradable, pero tampoco exagerado o pasado de absurdo. En lo particular me gusta mucho el estilo de humor que tiene este anime, la verdad.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora sí del apartado audiovisual que tiene este anime. Para ser adaptado por un estudio recientemente nuevo y desconocido, admiro que han hecho uno de los mejores trabajos de animación y adaptación que he visto en este año y sin exageración. No solo lo digo por lo atractivo que es su estilo de dibujo, el cuál es muy fiel al manga, sino también por la manera tan fluida y detallada que es. Los tonos claros, la paleta de colores vivos, el uso de luces y sombras, las expresiones, los efectos visuales, las vistas panorámicas y en 360° son una completa maravilla. Los efectos de sonido están bien, pero nada como su banda sonora que transmite, contagia y anima bastante. Una obra maestra del Slice of Life que vale la pena ver.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 10/10 en lo que respecta al género de comedia y Slice of Life.
