Of all the romance anime I've seen so far, very few have a plot similar to the one I'm bringing you today. The fact that the main character is an unattractive girl is something that already catches the eye simply because it's different from what you usually see in this industry. You know, I'm referring to the typical "kawaii" waifu with an appearance or physique straight out of a Shōjo manga. Personally, I find that these types of female characters are so abundant in this genre that it's difficult not to confuse them with generic characters. That's why April Showers Bring May Flowers caught my attention from the start when it aired last summer.

Beyond that, the anime also shares a story that is somewhat innocent and pure, as well as emotional and profound, to a certain extent. I can already tell you that it is not what it seems at first, because although it has a somewhat cliché plot of the typical protagonist who believes she will never experience a school romance with a handsome boy in her life, which is what ends up happening in the end, we can also see issues such as self-esteem problems, being accepted or rejected by society, deception, and even impossible loves. Fuera de su divertida historia de amor, también cuenta con varias historias cortas de personajes secundarios que llaman la atención.

In this case, the premise is simple, as it deals with the life of Hana Tabata, a girl with very low self-esteem, who is also lonely, modest, and even a little hard on herself. The detail of all this is that Hana ends up getting involved with Yosuke Ueno, the popular boy in her class, after the encounter they had at the beginning.

What our depressed protagonist doesn't expect is that Yosuke Ueno wants to be friends with her, despite everything she says she is. And not only that, but as time goes by, they may become something more, who knows. The dilemma in all this lies in what Hana thinks of herself and what others think of her when she gets together with Yosuke. Apart from this, Hana is not the only girl who is attracted to Yosuke in a certain way. Even so, Hana has a clear opinion of herself regarding her position and considers herself too modest to accept a romantic relationship with someone as attractive as him.

En este caso la premisa es simple al tratarse de la vida de Hana Tabata, una chica con muy baja autoestima, además de ser solitaria, modesta y hasta un poco dura consigo misma. El detalle de todo esto es que Hana llega a relacionarse con Yosuke Ueno, el chico popular de su salón, luego del encuentro que tuvieron al principio.

Lo que nuestra depresiva protagonista no espera es que Yosuke Ueno desee tener una amistad con ella, a pesar de todo lo que ella dice ser en realidad. Y no solo eso, sino que con el paso del tiempo puede que lleguen a ser algo más, quién sabe. El dilema de todo esto está en lo que Hana piensa de sí misma y de lo que los demás piensan de ella al juntarse con Yosuke. Obviously, in the West it is not the same as in the East, where social status, economic status, and even attractiveness are more important than anything else. Here there are exceptions when it comes to falling in love with someone simply for their "personality".

It may sound like a joke or even worse, but the reality is that a popular person will never end up with someone who is not attractive or well-known. Being "kind" and a good person may help a little, but that's not always the case. Although, well, we're talking about a RomCom anime, so let's not be too critical about all this. You could even say that the dilemma of the popular guy and the unpopular, unattractive girl is the source of most of the jokes and funny scenes in this anime.

Pero en realidad la sociedad actual llega a ser bastante cruel al momento de hablar de estas cosas. Obviamente, en occidente no es igual que en oriente donde se impone más la posición social, posición económica y hasta el atractivo por sobre todo lo demás. Aquí hay excepciones en cuanto a enamorarse de alguien simplemente por su “personalidad”.

Lo cliché o absurdo sería lo que vemos al final de este anime, cosa que no diré para no dejar spoiler alguno, pero seguramente ya muchos intuyen. Puede que suene a chiste o incluso peor, pero la realidad es que una persona popular nunca terminará con alguien que ni siquiera es atractiva o conocida. Puede que lo de ser “amable” y buena persona ayude un poco, pero no siempre termina siendo el caso. Aunque, bueno, estamos hablando de un anime RomCom, así que tampoco vamos a ponernos tan críticos con todo esto. Mainly in terms of the protagonist, who has a personality and way of thinking that is downright funny, in my opinion. Obviously, the story also helps a lot in seeing our favorite characters in situations that are both awkward and funny and interesting, to be honest. There are also the secondary characters, who attract attention due to one or another particular detail. You may end up hating some of them at first, but then it will be impossible not to grow fond of them all at the same time. Don't expect a high level of drama or particularly emotional or shocking scenes either. For the most part, there are moderate moments of humor, romance, and even heartbreak.

I also appreciate that there is no fanservice, something that is very common in this type of anime nowadays. The same goes for double entendres or those embarrassing scenes that only seek to sexualize the characters. Another thing to mention about the characters is how innocent they can be at times. Of course, there are a few exceptions, but in the case of Hana and Yosuke, I think the protagonist has more of a mature mindset than the popular guy, to be honest. Still, it's not like he's an idiot, since he has his moment of redemption, so to speak. As for the ending, I'll just say that it's quite satisfying, to be honest.

Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect of April Showers Bring May Flowers. Now that I see who adapted this work, I honestly expected something better. Still, I'm not complaining entirely because, although it's a bit simple, the art style and animation are at least pleasant. As for the character design, I have nothing against it, as it's fine for a RomCom. The same goes for the bright, warm color palette and visual effects. It's far from being the best animation for an anime of this style, especially given the fierce competition it faced during the season it aired.

But that doesn't take away from the fact that it's enjoyable and entertaining, and not just visually. The sound effects also do their job very well. The soundtrack doesn't stand out that much either, but it does manage to heighten the emotion of each moment to its peak. Anyway, this could be the last romance and comedy anime from last summer season that I bring you, so I hope it has at least caught your attention in some way. I wouldn't recommend it as one of the best of its kind, but if you're looking for something different and entertaining to watch one day, then you can give this anime a try if you want.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the romance and comedy genre.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene April Showers Bring May Flowers. Ahora que veo quién adaptó esta obra, la verdad esperaba visualizar algo mejor. Aún así no me quejo del todo ya que, si bien es un poco sencillo, el estilo de arte y la animación que posee es agradable por lo menos. En cuánto al diseño de los personajes no tengo nada en contra ya que está bien para ser un RomCom. Lo mismo digo con la paleta de colores brillantes y cálidos y los efectos visuales que tiene. Está muy lejos de ser la mejor animación para un anime de este estilo y menos con la altísima competencia que tuvo en esa temporada en la que se emitió.

Pero eso no quita que sea agradable y entretenida, no solo a la vista. Los efectos de sonido también cumplen muy bien con su labor. La banda sonora tampoco consigue destacarse tanto, pero sí logra elevar la emoción de cada momento hasta su punto máximo. En fin, este podría ser el último anime de romance y comedia de la pasada temporada de verano que les traigo, así que espero que al menos les haya llamado la atención de cierto modo. No lo llegaría a recomendar tanto como uno de los mejores de su tipo, pero si lo que buscas es algo diferente y a la vez entretenido para ver un día entonces puedes darle una oportunidad a este anime si quieres.

Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género de romance y comedia.
