Retro Anime: Witch Hunter Robin 🧡🔥 [ENG/ESP]
Greetings to everyone in The Realm Anime community. Today I'm joining you with a new anime review. This time it's "Witch Hunter Robin," an anime from 2002 produced by Sunrise studios. Much like Ergo Proxy, the anime has an austere and melancholic style, but it's imbued with a special charm in its aesthetics and storytelling that will captivate you from the very first moment. Or at least that's what happened to me, as I stumbled across this anime completely by chance while searching for anime similar to Vampire Hunter or Ergo Proxy. I didn't hesitate for a second to watch it for these reasons: aesthetics, year of release (I like older anime), and story. Here it is.
The story of this anime follows Robin Sena, a young woman who arrives in Japan from Italy to join an organization called STN-J; a squad of detectives tasked with investigating, hunting, and subduing individuals known as Witches. And by "Witches" they mean people with "Craft," meaning they possess all sorts of supernatural powers (bending metal, mind control, insect control, moving objects, etc.) and usually use their abilities to harm ordinary humans... or other witches. As we'll see in the first few episodes of this anime. The good thing is that STN-J only neutralizes them, never kills them.

En esta oportunidad se trata de "Witch Hunter Robin" un anime del año 2002, producido por los estudios Sunrise. Muy al estilo de Ergo Proxy, el anime tiene un estilo austero y , melancólico, pero cargado de un encanto especial en su estética y forma de narrar la historia, que te cautivará desde el primer momento. O al menos así me sucedió a mi, pues hallé este anime por pura casualidad cuando me encontraba buscando animes que fueran similares a Vampire Hunter o al mismo Ergo Proxy y di con él. No dude ni 2 segundos en verlo por estás razones: estética, año de publicación (me gustan los animes viejitos) e historia. Aquí se los presento.
La historia de este anime va sobre Robin Sena, una joven que llega de Italia a Japón, para unirse a una organización llamada STN-J; un escuadrón de detectives los cuales se encargan de investigar, cazar y someter individuos conocidos cómo Brujos. Y por Brujos se refieren a personas con "Craft", es decir, que tienen toda clase de poderes sobrenaturales (doblar metal, controlar mentes, controlar insectos, mover objetos, etc.) y que usualmente usan sus habilidades para causar daño a humanos comunes... O a otros brujos. Cómo podremos ver en los primeros capítulos de este anime. Lo bueno es que STN-J solo los neutraliza, nunca los mata.
STN-J assembles a team consisting of Sakon Karasuma (a woman with psychic powers), Michael Lee (a computer expert and hacker), Haruto Sakaki (a young, energetic hunter), Kosaka Shintaro (the group's leader), and Amon... the squad's leader and veteran, who will star alongside Robin in this story. Together, they must work in the shadows to stop these beings and fulfill the organization's objectives. But there's an important detail: ironically, Robin is also a "Craft"—a witch. This complicates matters, as she has a partner who is also potentially a threat.
Beyond the stereotype of what we know as witches, the series quickly makes it clear what kind of character it's referring to. And it's not someone with a broomstick, candelabras, or anything like that, but a completely ordinary person. The series also acts more like a squad similar to the one in the anime "Psycho-Pass" or something like the FBI in "The X-Files." However, at a certain point, this situation is re-evaluated when another organization called Solomon emerges, one that does kill Witches. As is common in this type of anime, it prompts us to reflect on whether the organization's objectives are truly ethical or righteous, and even more so... are they hiding something?
STN-J reúne un equipo conformado por Sakon Karasuma (una mujer con poderes psíquicos), Michael Lee (un informático y hacker), Haruto Sakaki (un joven cazador con mucha energía), Kosaka Shintaro (jefe del grupo) y Amon... Líder y veterano del escuadrón, quién protagonizará junto a Robin esta historia. Juntos, deberán trabajar tras las sombras para detener a estos seres y cumplir con los objetivos de la organización. Pero hay un detalle importante y es que, irónicamente, Robin también es alguien con "Craft", es decir, una bruja. Razón por la cual las cosas se verán complicadas al tener cómo compañera a alguien que es también, potencialmente una amenaza.
Fuera del estereotipo que pueda existir sobre lo que nosotros conocemos cómo brujas, la sería nos indica rápidamente qué tipo de personaje se refiere. Y no es alguien con escoba, candelabros o algo por el estilo, sino una persona totalmente mundana. También la serie actúa más cómo si se tratara de un escuadrón similar al que se presenta en el anime "Psycho Pass" o algo así cómo el FBI en los "Expedientes Secretos X". Sin embargo, en un punto dado esa situación se replantea ya que existe otra organización llamada Solomon quiénes sí matan a los Brujos. Cómo es común en este tipo de animes, nos empuja a reflexionar sobre si los objetivos de la organización son realmente éticos o correctos y más aún... ¿esconden algo?.
The series also has its touch of romance, as Amon is also Robin's love interest. This relationship, initially fraught with prejudice on Amon's part—he dislikes witches intensely (especially given his responsibility as leader to watch over her and ensure she doesn't pose a threat to STN-J)—transcends into camaraderie and something more. Both characters are unique. Amon, with his reserved, calculating nature that leaves no room for error, harmonizes with his sense of duty and justice. Robin, with her mysterious and ambiguous air, yet also innocent and noble, always sees beyond the obvious. To be honest, this is one of the reasons I chose to watch the anime.
Finally, it's a very beautiful anime. It unfolds at its own pace, unhurried but not too slow either. It's perfect calmness in animation. One can feel immersed in that urban atmosphere where it always seems to be the same season. A desaturated color palette, practically in shades of gray. And the music... I'll leave you with the opening so you can fall in love with that song called Shell. It's beautiful. Things like this, I feel, just aren't made anymore. It's one of those anime that warms your heart, takes your breath away, and makes you want to watch it all immediately. There are only 26 episodes, but they're all very enjoyable and leave you wanting more. I hope you give it a chance, and with that said, thank you so much for stopping by.
La serie también tiene su toque de romance, pues Amon es también el interés romántico de Robin, por lo que esa relación que en un principio se ve cargada por prejuicios por parte de Amon quien no gusta ni un poco de los brujos (más aún por tener la responsabilidad cómo líder de vigilar de ella y velar porque no sea una amenaza para STN-J) transcienden a la camaradería y un poco más. Ambos personajes son únicos. Amon con su carácter hermético, calculador y que no deja espacio para los errores, armoniza con su sentido del deber y la justicia. Robin con ese aire misterioso y ambiguo, pero también inocente y noble, que siempre ve más allá de lo evidente. Siendo sincera, esta es una de las razones por la cual elegí ver el anime.
Finalmente, es un anime muy bello. Corre a su propio ritmo, sin apuros pero tampoco muy lento. Es la perfecta calma hecha animación. Uno puede sentirse inmerso en esa atmósfera citadina dónde parece ser siempre la misma estación del año. Una paleta de colores desaturada, prácticamente en grises. Y la música... Les dejo el opening para que se enamoren de esa canción llamada Shell. Es preciosa. Cosas que yo siento ya no se producen más en la actualidad. Son de esos animes que te regocijan el corazón, que te quitan un poco el aliento y requieres de verlo todo inmediatamente. Son solo 26 episodios pero todos ellos muy disfrutables y que quedas con ganas de más. Espero que le den una oportunidad y sin más que decir, muchísimas gracias por pasar por aquí.
