Reality Check: Is It Expensive Or You Can't Afford It?
It's funny how we can find something sensible in a fool's talk or find something great from a small situation. It's funny but it's actually one of the things I use to believe the saying "Everything happens for a reason" and that's totally true if we take our time to think deep on it. I had one of the experience, learning something great somehow.
It may not seem great to you reading this but from my life's perspective since that encounter, I think I stumbled upon something great that day. We may not know the use of a new knowledge until we are faced with a situation that calls for it in our brains. It happened to me and now, I can't keep it to myself. It's my first real talk here hehe.
Is it expensive or you can't afford it? This was a question I got from a seat partner I met some months ago during one of my travels. We had just met and sitting close to each other as we travelled to our different destination but I noticed he was into a skill I had been wanting to ask questions about so I asked to know his own cost.
I gave a small scream and replied, "Wow! That expensive? I think I'll pass." I was totally hoping to get a respond like you could get cheaper cost somehow but he gave me a reality check question, hitting me hard on the fact that I wouldn't have actually say it's an expensive skill if I had the money to pay for it. I was speechless.
A lot of times, people complain about how things are so expensive and somehow, some still go ahead to buy while some keeps waiting for a cheaper option or earn more money to get what they thought was expensive. Let's be honest, a billion dollar net worth individual can not say a 5 million dollar car is expensive, why is it like that?
He has a lot where that 5 million dollar will come out from, he won't see the need to check if he's even being scammed. But from a 5 million dollar net worth, that will look expensive but honestly, it's not the product that is expensive, it's on that individual who is not able to afford it yet. It's a hard truth that many myself included, will accept.
While there are things that are obviously expensive as the guy explained to me, they are actually expensive because we measure them to our financial strength and honestly, a lot of us make the mistake of limiting how much more we can earn in that time of pronouncing something "expensive". A product worth is totally on you.
Imagine if you had way more than you do now, won't you go for the car you've always seen as expensive? Or if you had more, would having a house of your own be too expensive to dream about? I'm pretty sure your response is a NO and I want to believe you understand what I'm trying to point out here. It's not to change your thought on spending wisely but to upgrade your thought.
Our reality should always be in our head so we don't let wishful thinking take us out. Things are expensive to you now is because you can't afford it. Instead of tagging that item as expensive, focus on upgrading your financial strength so what you thought was expensive will be just right in it's price tag because you can afford a lot of it.
Images used are mine.
You are actually right the thought of us buying that things expensive limit us to belittle ourselves but if we actually look beyond surface of how much we spend in a year we know we can afford such thing thats why they say the way a billionaire think will always be different from the way a poor man think thanks for sharing
That's right. Thanks for stopping by.
You welcome
But to be honest, some people can afford it still, yet they’ll say it’s expensive and walk away. At times, it’s not about affordability it is about how much value they place on that thing. What feels expensive to one person may be seen as unnecessary by another...my take though
Yeah, that's another thought around it.

Totally understood! Things are only expensive from our own relative sense on how we view the world based on our financial pocket. I remember going to a restaurant recently and this person sitting across from us looking at the menu and then saying out loud "But this restaurant is very expensive!"
It's inherently a mindset thing :)
Indeed, it's a mindset thing.
Obviously I will consider the price depending on my financial situation. Why should I think about it from other's prespective. If I say expensive, that means it's expensive. My prespective matters only.
Lol of course, you have to look at the worth of a product from your perspective.
Yes, I have been in situations where something looks expensive to me because I couldn't afford it, and I would have to work towards earning more to afford it. Also, I would see it this way again: Just because something is expensive doesn't always mean someone cannot afford it or they should try to upgrade their financial capacity, but sometimes, one needs to understand if it is what they actually want or not. I can't just say because I can afford something expensive, I should go for it without asking if it is really worth buying, because most times, they end up becoming useless when we don't use them.
Of course, it's important to buy only what you are in need of. You can't buy something expensive because you are trying to prove that you can afford it.

This was such an eye-opening read . I love how you turned a simple conversation with a seat partner into a powerful life lesson. The shift from “it’s expensive” to “I can’t afford it yet” really changes perspective, and you explained it so well with relatable examples.
A very inspiring first Real Talk entry practical, thoughtful, and motivating. Well done
