The Garden files 02 - sand sculpture
It's that time of year again and we are all excited about who is coming next week. The letter has been written and we even got to meet the man himself in person before he starts the busy season. My eight-year-old is still clinging to his belief in Santa. With hopes that he will get all he asked for. I had to take him aside and tell him that whatever Santa doesn't bring I would make up the difference. I think it is only fair to split the costs as neither of us is made of money.
Today I bought him a ukulele, just from me. I think it will be a good starter instrument to go along with his great voice. He did a solo in the school play this morning and I will admit that Clodagh and my heart melted to the voice of our angel singing Edelweiss.
I look forward to taking some time off work to do some work around the house. There will be no rest but, a change is as good as a rest for me. I have an extractor fan to install and a truckload of logs to cut into firewood. Domestic bliss.
I like Christmas mainly because from the 21st of December the days get longer and it means we are starting to see the other side of winter. I think it is nice that we have formed all these stories to go along with the changing of the seasons and even though it has been hijacked by commerce it is good to remember that it is all about family and our ancestors trying to make sense of the world in which we live.

Continuing on from my last post this is the second sculpture I made in my Radiologist friend's garden. It was from 2011 so, a long time ago in my sculpting years. Nothing too special about it except that it was cold as I made it. Christmas was coming and he wanted a themed piece for the children. I made their request for a Santa.
He looked sweet enough and was funnily enough coming out of the present bag. This was an element I made to give support, so I didn't have to give him legs and the presents added more support.
Apart from the hands that looked like something AI would have carved, he turned out OK. But over 12 years later I think I could do a better job.

Ps
Thanks for reading. I use PeakD to document my work as an ephemeral Sculptor of sand, snow and ice, amongst other things. This will hopefully give it a new life on the Hive Blockchain.
I hope you'll join me again soon
@ammonite
I am also starting to create NFTs of my sculptures and welcome you to my gallery where you can own a bit of ephemeral sculpture history.
That's a great idea for a gift to start him off with music. That's amazing to hear about his solo in the play, it's great too that he's at the perfect age to really throw himself into hobbies like that.
My boy is only 8 months old, but he has a set of lungs on him, and he seems interested whenever he see's me playing bass, so music could be on the cards for him.
Also, yeah I'm happy that the days are getting a bit longer now too. Winter is nice, but it gets dark too early. The main thing I'm looking forward to about Christmas is the fact that it's my sons first one, and also the get togethers with family. It's also the fist Christmas me and my partner will be spending together. We live in different towns so prior to this, we'd meet on Christmas Eve, and then after Christmas.
That's a great sculpture! Yeah, in the 12 years since you've most likely gotten better, but that's the great thing about looking at past work in any art form. I do polymer modeling, which when I started were pretty rough, but with practice I can see a big change in my skills.
I wish I could teach him how to play but unfortunately, I never got around to learning any musical instrument. He is on his own but maybe in the new year, he will get some lessons.
It is exciting to have a baby at Christmas. Probably a bit young to know what's going on but is great for the magic of Christmas. Nice that it will be all of your family's first Christmas together.
As I go through documenting all of my work on the blockchain there will be many ups and downs in quality. but hopefully, people will see a gradual improvement in my work.
So sweet! Well done 🤗
Thanks, Caroline, Happy Christmas to you.
There's a fun project for you, teach an AI how to carve XD
I showed this one to sibling dearest and she was amazed and what you could do with sand.
So cute about the child's solo ^_^ bet he was amazing! Is he enjoying the ukelele or is that a Christmas present?
I have often thought about using AI for sculpting. Maybe I could train it will all my own work and see if it can give me some new ideas to carve. I am a bit like AI in that I always have an issue with hands.
I hope you showed your sibling some of my later work. This is so old Santa was a young man.
Happy Christmas to you and yours.
LoL hands are just hard. I'm sure the AI will probably get there eventually and then we'll have to find something else to differentiate it with.
She's seen your work from all over the joint, she sees all the cool things when we're sitting next to each other and when I'm back at my other home I'm sending her the cool things XP
