A Wednesday Walk on Battle Isle

I had to take a day of vacation earlier this week to help out with our daughter; more specifically, I need to get her to and from school. With the new job some 30 minutes away, the "hop out of work for a few minutes and then be right back" option no longer exists. So with a whole day to myself, why not go on an adventure?

Well, for this adventure, I headed to a small town south of me called Victory, Wisconsin. More specifically, I went to check out a campground called the Blackhawk Campground to photograph a historical marker and the area around it. Some 58 minutes later after dropping our daughter off at school, I was there.

This area is rich in US history and was specifically the site of an event called the Black Hawk Massacre. During the early years of the USA, the native American population was typically hunted down and slaughtered by state and federal militias. One such slaughter happened here; I could get into the history of the event, but I'll let the historical markers tell the story...

History is filled with hundreds of thousands of events such as this...I just have always found it so surprising that this key historical incident to be found so close to home, you know? The battle happened almost 200 years ago, and still, as I wandered the banks of the Mississippi River, I could feel the calmness in the area. Maybe it was the continued gray skies, but there is a sense of profoundness and the sacred at this place.

With more sites to visit along this historic "trail", I hope to get a few more Hive shares this year as I visit each spot. Yet at least for this #wednesdaywalk, I most certainly appreciate the space and the living and dead that once roamed these same grounds.
