#Wednesday Walk - Enjoying Beautiful Views in Cloudy Weather.
This post is for the #wednesdaywalk challenge and the #makemesmile challenge collaboration. This collaboration initially took place once a month, but due to its popularity, @tattoodjay (of the #wednesdaywalk) and @elizacheng (of #makemesmile) decided to make it a weekly thing.
If you want to know more about the rules, visit this week's post by @tattoodjay where you will find all the rules at the bottom of his post after you've enjoyed his beautiful photos from his walk.
Sometimes we happen to visit places that don't necessarily provide the opportunity for a proper walk. Yet, the views you get from these places can be beautiful. Today I would like to share two such places with you.
A View of Inanda Dam.
The first place is not even an official viewpoint and there is no hiking trail either. It is merely standing at the edge of a suburb, Crestholme, in the Outer-West Area of the Greater Durban. From there you get a spectacular view of the Inanda Dam.
Way back in 2004, we met a couple who were living there. The guy was a working colleague of mine. We went out there to visit them a couple of times and I can remember the most beautiful views of the dam below from their property. Even standing in their lounge, you could enjoy a breathtaking view of the dam.
They have since moved inland, so we haven't been out there for a very long time.
A few weeks ago, my wife had an appointment at a hair salon in Waterfall. Seeing that you have to pass through Waterfall to get to Crestholme, I told my wife I would drop her off at the hair salon. Then, while she was getting her hair cut, I wanted to go to Crestholme and see if I could find a spot from where I could see the dam to take some photos.
According to Wikipedia, "Inanda Dam is an earth-fill type dam located on the Mgeni River, near Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It was established in 1989 and its primary purpose is to serve for domestic and industrial use".
After driving around and searching for a spot from where I could see the dam, I found an open lot between two houses. I parked the car and took a walk to where I expected to have a view over the dam.
But, before we get to the dam... Another interesting fact about the dam is that it is also associated with the Dusi Canoe Race.
The Dusi Canoe Race takes place every year.
It is run along the Msunduzi and Umgeni Rivers over a total distance of 120 kilometers (75 miles). The race attracts between 1600 and 2000 paddlers each year, making it the biggest canoeing event on the African continent. It is organized by the Natal Canoe Club. The clubhouse is located on the banks of the Msunduzi River, at the exact start point of the race.
The Dusi Canoe Marathon is held over a period of three days, with each day having a defined beginning and end. The average finishing time for top teams is under nine hours.

According to the same Wikipedia post mentioned above, the second day includes an 11km (6.8 miles) flatwater paddle across the dam.
My first photo is focused on the Umgeni River coming into the dam.
Looking to the right is the beginning of the dam.
As you can see, it was a very cloudy and chilly day.
In my last photo of the dam, I zoomed out to give you a better idea of the view that was in front of me.
A View Point Just Below Bluff, Durban.
The following photos were taken last weekend on a different outing.
We went to Ansteys Beach, in Bluff, Durban (I'll share those photos in my next post). It is a suburban area just south of Durban Harbor.
But, I wanted to find two other spots/venues that I have spotted on Google Maps.
- The Durban Bluff Lighthouse, and
- A spot only indicated as a "viewpoint" just below Merebank.
So, after spending some time at Ansteys Beach, we set off to see if we could find these two spots.
Again, it was a very cloudy and cool day.
First, we found the Durban Bluff Lighthouse.
Unfortunately, we couldn't get closer to it. Although we could see staff in a little office next to the lighthouse, the gates were locked. So, unlike the lighthouse in Umhlanga, you can't really get closer to it.
From here, we went to the viewpoint.
On our way there, we passed two points which are indicated as paragliding launch points...Durban Bluff Paragliding Launch, and Durban Merebank Paragliding Launch. But there was nothing going on there.
Shortly after passing these two points...
The viewpoint.
Looking out over the ocean, just offshore was an oil tanker busy doing its thing at the SAPREF SINGLE BUOY MOORING Pipeline.
With the next two photos, I was actually having fun, showing how small man is compared to the ocean. I always say this, but seeing it from this angle...wow! Can you see the ski boat on the water?
And this one? Can you see it? It's right in the center of the photo...
And with that, we come to the end of today's post!
Thank you for reading my post! I do appreciate it!
It must have been so cool to be a lighthouse keeper in days gone by. I think that life would have suited me quite nicely lol. Stunning stretch of coastline! Hope you wifes hair came out as she had hoped too :) - great post my friend. Thanks as always for sharing.
Yes, I think it must have been so special! I'm glad you enjoyed my photos! And my wife was extremely happy with her hair, thank you😄👍!
Thank you for your kind words, @ma3str0! Have a great day!
See looks fantastic
Good morning dear friend @jacoalberts how are you
what a lovely place you have visited, the aerial shots are really beautiful, the dam looks great, as well as the viewpoint.
Great photos, I appreciate you sharing with us.
Good day, @jlufer! I am well thanks for asking! How are you?
I'm glad you enjoyed the shots in my post!
Thank you for stopping by! Have a great day!
such a beautiful area the views are fantastic
What a cool lighthouse
Ohh yeah that was a great game for the Springboks against the All Blacks, who do you think is going to win the world cup
Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk :)
The views were great indeed!
Yes, the Springboks had a great game against the All Blacks! Wow, I was hoping for a win, but in all honesty, I never expected that score...lol! However, that is also making me cautious now...I think the All Blacks are going to come back with a vengeance! They are going to be like a wounded beast now... they never just lie down or give up! They will come back twice as hard...lol.
The World Cup...? Obviously, I am hoping for the Springboks and I do think they have a good chance of winning...But I also think the All Blacks have a good chance. I hear some people speculating about some of the European teams as well, such as Italy and France. But personally, I think it's going to be a battle between the Springboks and the All Blacks.
Who do you think is going to win?
yes I thought that loss was perhaps what the AllBlacks needed to often they have gone in on a winning streak and outright favorites and lost it so this will give them a kick in the butt for sure LOL
If I am not wrong i think NZ is currently 4th in the world ranking the lowest they have bene going into a world cup
I of course want the All blacks to win, but if i had to pick another team or who I think will make the final with NZ I would go for Ireland
if your interested @welshstacker is running a sweep for the World cup and there are a few spots left open
That happens to the Springboks too... I will never forget how badly they lost to Japan in that one match...and they were also the favorites. Luckily, they came back strong after that...that kick in the butt you are referring too...LOL!
Yes, I think the All Blacks were 2nd, but they moved down to 4th after losing to the Springboks...
Ireland is a very strong contender and I think they are in the #1 spot on the ranking at the moment, but while hoping for the Boks, I still think we need to keep an eye on the All Blacks. Especially now after losing that game... They are not going to take that lying down...LOL.
Thanks for mentioning the sweep! I'll check it out!
I read today the French are trying to sych out the All Blacks saying its the weakest team they have ever fielded, I think thats just added fuel to the fire LOL
Oh my goodness! That is adding fuel to the fire...LOL! As a matter of fact, I am sitting here waiting for the game to start between the All Blacks and France!
If France is going to swallow that remark, it will bring a huge smile to my face...LOL!
Are you also going to watch the game?
Lovely photos. And the sky looks so dramatic. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, @clairemobey! I'm glad you enjoyed my photos! Have an awesome day!
A pleasure! And to you too 😊😊
Thank you, @ewkaw, and the @qurator Team, for your support by manually curating my post! I do appreciate it!
You're very welcome :)
Have a nice day!
😉👍
That lighthouse is special. Love the Natal coastline but a lighthouse is always amazing to me
I'm glad you enjoyed the lighthouse, @buckaroobaby! I have a soft spot for lighthouses too!
Thanks for stopping and for giving your feedback! Have a great day!
And a wonderful weekend
Some amazing large dams in the region, paradise for water sports, places to go away from city life nice views captured.
Lighthouses up and down the coast entry by arrangement or certain days when one can enter premises, happened since remotely attended to which is sad.
Enjoyable outings on both occasions, lots of cloud cover not enough rain unfortunately.

Yes, I took down a phone number I saw on a board at the lighthouse. I want to phone them and see what I can find out with regards to visiting the lighthouse...if maybe any others for that matter.
True to what you say about the cloud cover but not enough rain. Today was quite warm and it looks like tomorrow i going to be really warm, to drop down to 20 with possibly some rain on Monday...
Many lighthouses around the country may open specific days or times for public, each has it's own set of rules.
Weather in the upcoming week is a roller coaster ride between hot/cooler weather, hopefully a few drops of rain. Sourced from weather by local in FB....
Happy Sunday, we are being blown away on the coastline.
I will look into this...
Yes, the weather is on a roller coaster ride indeed... lol!
