One Zemun, one Wednesday, one walk

For many years, for me, Zemun was just one part of Belgrade, a continuation of the city on the other side of the river, until I delved a little deeper into the history of Zemun.

On the right bank of the river, Zemun was just a few kilometers upstream along the great Danube from the part of Belgrade where I lived.

As a child, I almost never came to Zemun, but that started to change as I grew up, when I made acquaintances with people who lived in this part of Belgrade.
And I always had petty quarrels with them, claiming that Zemun is part of Belgrade, while the natives of Zemun claimed that Zemun is a town next to Belgrade.

And I have to admit, without joking, that Zemun with its rich history in the past was indeed a great city.
The city, which was located on the border of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, represented a metropolis for a small town on the other side of the river, which later grew into a large city.

Although both Belgrade and Zemun are located on the banks of the Danube, they have always been separated by the Sava River, making them parts of two empires in the past.

As I grew up and started to move around my city more (and I consider Zemun my city, even though the people of Zemun claim that it is another city too), I began to discover its beauties.

Almost every walk in Zemun includes the banks of the Danube.
The beautiful large promenade simply beckons you to walk along it, buy popcorn and sit on one of the benches, watch the wide Danube and listen to the seagulls flying over the river.

Flocks of white swans give the coast a special charm. Sometimes I go down to the water and enjoy the beauty of these beautiful creatures.

When you find yourself on the cobbled streets in this part of Zemun, it is clear that you are approaching the old town center and if you follow the road uphill, it is quite certain that you will reach the Gardoš tower.

The fortress on the hill above Zamun is the symbol of this city.

Needless to say, the view from this place is fantastic.
Pin worthy place in #worldmappin 🙂

I always like to look down the Danube to look for the red and white chimney of the Dorćol heating plant, which is located in the part of town where I grew up.

As if in optical visibility from the Gardoš tower, the neighborhood 🙂

The crowd was big, so instead of resting on the wide walls of the tower, I walked further down the street.

In the immediate vicinity of the Gardoš tower, there is the old Zemun cemetery, where I took a short look and took a few photos, so that I would have a reminder that I must return to this cemetery, in order to take photos of some interesting monuments for #tombstonetourism

From the cemetery, I went in the opposite direction, down the big stairs that I had never passed, and found some interesting details on them - the walls of the old part of the fortress, a cat that was walking (like me), and on the stairs, that is, on every step, the name of the country of the world was written.

I went down the stairs, walked through the famous streets of Zemun and ended the #Wednesdaywalk at the Zemun square, where the people of Zemun, as well as the visitors of this beautiful "city" enjoyed a warm autumn day.

IF Zemun is part of Belgrade, it's my favorite part! I know maybe 5% of it, but I love it! I have a lot more to explore around it, just need a bit more time to do it...

Thanks for the virtual tour, btw! 🍻

For me, who spent more than 35 years in the old part of Belgrade, the area around Kalemegdan, and the central city streets, the pedestrian zone and Dorćol is still number 1.
But Zemun is also very interesting, because of its rich history, but also because of its proximity to the river.

You're welcome, I'm glad I shared a couple of pictures that you liked.

I'm waiting for some pictures from Wroclaw, I heard that the central square is beautiful?
