Walking for Apple Picking
Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to share one of my favorite things to do: apple picking!

Walking for Apple Picking
Apple picking has absolutely been one of my favorite activities my whole life. I've been doing it since I can remember, really. My parents have been bouncing around to a few different farms but we settled on one farm that is about an hour away from where I grew up and although I've gone to many different farms throughout the area, I think that this one is definitely my favorite for picking apples!
I was a little surprised, the apples this year weren't that big. A few years ago we had a significant amount of rain, similar to how we started out the summer with basically 2 entire days without rain in the month of June lol it was one of the wettest June's I can remember, though I do remember some others that had a considerable amount of rain. No don't give me that climate change dog shit, thanks.
The apples were pretty normal size, I wonder if it was because we went from a lot of rain to some pretty hot temperatures for a little while, but then it cooled off and was a pretty mild bit of weather towards the end. Don't get me wrong, the apples tasted delicious! We were just looking forward to some that were ..bigger I guess haha.
I love standing in the rows of all of these trees! They have such a cool look to them, completely full and bursting at the seams with the apples waiting for people to come by and swipe a couple. I know that I didn't see any deer in here, but deer are certainly apple lovers! Some hunters with less scruples than they should have bait deer by dropping down a few dozen apples and within a day or two there are deer dropping by to eat some snacks. Thankfully I think it's illegal to do that, since it is trapping them unfairly compared to all of the other hunters who are standing in blinds and stuff to get one.
With the farm here, there were hundreds of rows of apples and they cycle through them depending on the day and how strongly they are getting people to come by and harvest for themselves. They certainly employ some visa workers to come by and harvest for them but they mainly rely on the tourist attractions of people flocking by the hundreds or thousands to the farms for some delicious fresh farm treats.
When I was growing up, I was a little misinformed when it comes to apple varieties. I thought that McIntosh were my favorite species of the apples but it turns out that it wasn't the case! Cortland has now become my favorite, though McIntosh is a close second. They have a delicious bitter yet sweet taste to them and damn do they have a loud crunch! I love the sound of a nice crunch bite into an apple haha, delicious stuff!
There is another variety that I think I was mistaking Cortland apples for. Empire apples are ones that are wicked sweet and they are quite honestly fucking disgusting. Those are the apples you frequently seen sold at convenience stores and stuff, where people don't normally buy an apple but they occasionally will. Those apples are just gross lol I don't know if I would eat one if given a choice between that and something else. Sorry to y'all who love Empire apples, but that's not my jam! :D
We were sandwiched happily between a row of Cortland and a row of McIntosh apples and we picked a bag full of them. In years past we would get the gigantic bag but we also have the farm share that we get food from as well. The farm share that we have gives us about 8-10 apples a week for the last 2 weeks since it's prime apple picking season, so we've got lots of apples roaming around the house. The key for me is to make sure to eat them all before they go bad! I missed out on some and that makes me sad, because apples are definitely one of my favorite and healthiest snacks in the autumn time that we are in.
Sadly we've had a decent bit of rain as well these last few weekends and I heard someone say that the farms were losing out on many thousands of dollars of revenue because of the damn weather this year. Ah well, we've made sure to get out to the farm a couple times to pick some apples and enjoy the weather, so we will try and go for some late season apples as well in a week or so. Those ones aren't as much my favorite as the early to middle season ones but the only apples I'm discriminating against are the Empires LOL and they don't have those around here on the trees. We are McIntosh and Cortland regions that's for sure!

To be honest, apple picking is one of the activities I dream about. I haven't seen an apple tree yet; I can only imagine how beautiful it is to pick an apple and eat it under the apple tree.
It's one of my family's favorite outings! It's a wonderful thing. I hope you get to do it one day! It is great to be able to pick lots of apples and eat several of them while you are out in the fields.

I had no idea there were different species of apples. The only type I've eaten are the Empire( I figured because of your description)
Seems fun to be able to pick your apples yourself
It is a lot of fun indeed to pick your own fruit like apples!
There are actually 400+ varieties of apples if I remember correctly! There are so many!
400 varieties? 😯, woah! That's a lot!!
If I see myself in such environment, apple picking will be my best hobby. You guys are living life with apples🥰
The photo of apple with teeth cut got me salivating. I need to go and buy one to quench this urge
Haha ya the apples are a wonderful thing for sure! We didn't realize how lucky we are until I started posting these things on hive and talking with people like yourself who haven't been able to go apple picking. I know that I appreciate life so much more now!
I wish I could just be picking apples here like you do over there
Apples don't grow here but do you think the seed will grow if I import it from your country?
There's only one way to find out! I was reading something a few weeks ago and it’s amazing that we have so much food that we consume but don’t save or use the seeds and throw them away. We should plant them all!
In Nigeria, we only have one specie, and people rarely eat it. They prefer the imported ones. I think it's a delightful thing, looking at that apple farm
Thanks dude yeah fresh apples are awesome and like I've said to others I never knew how lucky I was until posting these things on here. I don't think of a life without an apple farm to go to!
If you ever get the chance to try an imported McIntosh apple I highly recommend it!
Brings back memories of when I worked in a Market Garden, and would pick apples was hard work doing it for 10 or more hours a day but we had a fun group of people so it was fun for the most part
Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk :)
Yeah I'm sure dude! I bet that as long as you had a good group it was pretty enjoyable. Glad I was able to stir up a nice memory!
👍🙂👍
This procedure is very fun to do when one goes into the orchard, plucks the apples and then eats them which are very good for one's health.
For sure! I love apples and really glad that I get to eat them!
Good.
