House Hunting: A Quest for a Better Place

(Edited)

For a while, the thoughts of leaving my present apartment have been going through my mind, and that is because of some of the challenges I have been facing at where I am. From the bushy compound to the scarcity of water and many other inconveniences,

My Thumbnails (33).jpg

My apartment is not bad at all, but where the problem lies is that we don't have good management. The owner of the building had died, and since then, the family has not taken the responsibility to finish what he had started. So what do I mean?

IMG_9381.jpeg

This is the compound of the apartment I stay in. The landlord was building another building just beside it before he died, and since he died, it has remained that way. I didn't know the landlord in person or even ever get to meet him, but from what I heard from my neighbours, they said he was a very rich man, and if he were alive, he would have completed it.

I guess you can see how the compound is bushy. I have tried my best to complain to the tenants that we need to pay people who would help us clear off the bushes in the compound, but nobody is ready to contribute towards doing this.

I have gotten really frustrated, so I decided to go house hunting to see if I could find a better place to move to.

One of the places I got attracted to was the "Rahkaz Modern Hostel". The place looked like an estate and was well maintained. I had to go in to ask the security if there were still rooms available and how much they were worth.

IMG_9313.jpeg

To my surprise, a single self-contain i.e., just a room, kitchen, and toilet, was $400 per year, while a room-and-parlour was $500 per year. That was a lot, and it was more than what I could afford. My budget was $200, and I didn't plan to go any further, as if I tried, it would affect my finances and possibly hurt my Hive Power.

So I decided to move on. I was with an agent who was taking me through different apartments, and there was one he suggested for me that I would like. Earlier on, he had sent some videos and pictures, and I happened to like what I saw. I just need to see it in person; maybe it is the same as what I see in the video.

The few things he told me about the apartment were that it had a personal transformer, so I would not need to worry about low voltages, and also that it has a powerful solar panel inverter powering the house, which is also strong enough to pump water into the house.

So in general, I would not have any problem concerning light, and the price was $220. With all the descriptions, I had fallen in love with the hostel without even seeing it, so I had to check it out to see if I would still remain in love with it.

I went along with @creativepearl; she accompanied me in this house hunting, which made the journey not boring as I had someone to chat with. When we got there, we took some pictures.

Finally, I got to this place. I was a little disappointed about the compound, and it is quite painful that I don't have the picture on my phone. But let's move on to the things I found out that I don't like about this place.

First, they had way too many rooms. I dislike places that have too many rooms, and I always have the feeling that too many people mean more problems. The whole apartment alone would have nothing less than a hundred rooms, if not more.

So I went inside the room to check it out, and here is what I found.

IMG_9328.jpeg

The kitchen was too small and not well constructed. I cannot imagine myself having to cook in such a small place. This leaves me wondering where I would place my tabletop gas cooker or where I would place my fridge.

IMG_9331.jpegIMG_9325.jpegIMG_9324.jpeg

The rooms were too small. My bed alone is too big to fill the whole space of the room, leaving no space for my workstation. I had to check all the rooms in the building, but that was how all of them were constructed.

I could not understand the reason why the place had so many rooms that people had not taken them because the people who came by to check the rooms were probably discouraged by the way the rooms were small.

I was laughing at myself while imagining how I had fallen in love with a place that I ended up not liking one bit after visiting.

The truth is, I actually fell in love with the place because I had imagined how much I would save if I moved there. I would not have to worry about money for electricity or money for fuel to run my generator.

As much as running my generator on gas is cheaper than fuel, I still spend quite a lot of money per month, which is about $20–$35 and can be less if the power holding company in Nigeria decides to be nice by bringing power very often in that month.

We checked quite a lot of more hostels, which I would have loved to share, but I have to stop here. Thanks for reading through.

Most hostel owners just want to milk students and their money. This particular one is a little over priced for the small spaces it has. $220 is not small money.

Find a good place for yourself, man. E gats dey spacious so we no go fight when I come around. 😁

exactly, most of the hostels are overpriced. After I went out and I saw hostels they were calling for $185 and $190... I was beginning to appreciate my $120 hostel oh because mine is more spacious and comes with a wardrobe.

All the ones I saw were up to $200 and does not have a wardrobe and I am like why would I get the place $200 and no wardrobe is there.

Finding a new place is not always easy, I know what I went through when I couldn't stay a year in the hostel and had to find a lodge outside school to stay in.
It wasn't easy to find a house with complete essential facilities.

The fact that this house has solar panels that could pump water is enough to make anyone want it. There will always be light and water.
It's sad the rooms are not big enough for your taste. I hope you find a good place soon.

Agents and their sweet tongues, I remembered the time I was searching for an apartment in Abeokuta, I met this agent that promised to get me suitable apartment, he sent all the specs of the apartment which I loved so much.

It is when he took me there that I realised it will cost me about ₦1200 to go to school every day. I was so pissed, I ended up cursing him 😂😂😂

They will never talk about the difficulties and challenges of the apartment, I mean look at how the kitchen looks like, like a wardrobe 😂😂😂

House hunting can be stressful. I feel if you hammer on the management of your current apartment, your neighbors will get the memo and join you. Anyways, I hope you get a perfect apartment

Wouldn't you be able to easily pay a year of rent
just by saving Hive Dollars?

I know you don't like to Power Down but it's just an idea ;<)

I clearly understand why you didn't go for that tiny apartment in the too many apartments building.

True... You know me so much 😅😂...

But if hive enter $1 today I may power down some hive to keep in HBD savings.

Actually my plan initially was to get a friend to borrow me that amount and then pay back within two to three months.

I know you a little bit, by now haha!

200 usd per year, you said, right?

I pay around 300 per month, for my apartment
and that is considered cheap.

Things are looking good again, for crypto.

Give it some time and we'll reach the 1 dollar per Hive.
You can already start your powerdown though,
it takes some time ;<)

Cheers!

I get pissed each time I see or hear of a hostel with high price but small room, like wtf!.... what value or offer are you trying to sell to students, Just a fine compound?

Nah.... that hostel with solar inverter that can post the whole rooms has the biggest offer for real but they messed up with space. Imagine the space is now big, students would fight to get such hostel with big room and solar inverter.

You'd have to go for another house hunting.

$400 for a room self contained, some landlord or caretaker won't make heaven. Has the place been furnished already or what?

Thank God you went to check the place because even from the pictures, one can tell that the place is very small. Too bad you have to leave that apartment, I knew the stress you went through with that place.

I believe you will find a perfect apartment soon.

Lol... You sef see how expensive it is... They are taking advantage of students. It's not their fault, these students have money.

Are there tenants in the house? It baffles me why a student would pay so much money for accommodation when there are handout to buy and others.
