Parents choosing what they get.

Hello, everyone.

Welcome to my blog and another wonderful edition of the Hive Learner's featured post. Trust me, as humans, during our free time, we go about thinking and imagining a lot of things. Some of these things sound funny, and never did we think a time would come when we would even give such a thing a thought. Reading through the Hive Learner's prompt actually reminded me of a time when I was thinking about how parents get to choose the type of trait their kids possess, how they behave, and the talent they carry. I pictured a scenario where parents get to design their kids exactly the way they want them, removing anything that will stress their child, whether genotype or anything.

Source

I have seen parents complain about their child; some complain bitterly about the child's behavior, some even because of the child's genotype and how stressful it has been for them dealing with a child with that type of genotype. The truth is that not every parent is with the child they got, and that alone takes away their happiness, as there is nothing they can do. The child is theirs, and they have to take whatever stress that comes with the child.

That day I was like, since many parents regret having the type of kids they have and go about either blaming God for the type of child they have or looking for who to put the blame on, why not let them get the chance to actually choose and design how they want their child so that if the child decides to do otherwise or things go sideways, they will have themselves to blame and not go about looking for who to shift the blame to?

After giving it a thought, I then asked myself if it is the right thing to do and also how it will end. And I came to realize that there are no two ways about it, as it will end badly. Humans are selfish, and once a thing like this happens, they tend to showcase how selfish they are, and they won't even mind who is at the receiving end.

Will allowing parents to choose traits and talents for their kids be an ethical thing to do?

As much as it is a good thing, I think it is unethical. One thing I know for sure about humans is that it is only a matter of time before they start doing too much and going the extra mile just to get the best for their own child, not minding how it affects the child of another. Giving parents such room will also give room for a lot of unethical things to start happening. They will cheat just to get the best for their own child; they will be dishonest and will only care about having all the best for themselves and not bother about others or how they get it figured out.

God has a reason why he did not permit such a thing; probably by now we would have run out of what was needed to give a baby talent, or, assuming if it were in a basin, the talents that will be left in it will be those that the parents don't like because they will only pick what they feel is best, leaving the rest.

I get what you’re saying. A lot of parents do wish they could choose how their kids turn out, especially when things get tough. But if everyone could design their child, it would just bring more problems. People would always want the perfect child, and it could make life harder for others. Some things are just not meant to be controlled by us.

Exactly, somethings are not meant to be controlled by humans at all.

Thanks for stopping by..

Each human being has "free will" to do things, says the same religion, so it makes me so funny that it is mentioned that it is not ethical. If I had choice, of course I would prefer to have a child with diseases resistant to disease and with great intelligence, I definitely believe that it would lead us to have a better world, but as I have said in other publications, I respect the faith of people in their religion, and I think that each other should also respect the choice of each one to decide a genetically or not altered child.

Indeed, the idea of being able to 'choose' the traits of children raises many ethical questions. At first glance, it may seem like a positive thing, but as you rightly pointed out, it could further intensify human selfishness and create deep inequalities. Not everything that is possible is actually right

It might seem like the right thing to do at first, but on the long run will give rise to many unethical things.
