To Break or to Keep: The Dilemma of Promises

When we speak of promises, a lot of make promises to others on a normal day around the world. But the big question is, how many of these individuals stick to their promises. What is a promise? It’s basically an assurance to someone about something. For example, promise rings assure the other party that at the end of the day, this person is going to marry you because they wish to spend their life with you. But not all promise rings get relaxed with wedding rings, sadly.

One thing about life is that people change the same way situations can also change. A promise made today can be broken tomorrow due to so many reasons and happenings. Some promises are broken for good reason while others are not. But at the end of the day, what everyone remember is the fact that promise was broken. Have I ever broken a promise I made to someone? Yes , I have. And has someone very broken a promise they made to me? Yes, multiple times! But life moves on still.

Now, how did I end up breaking a promise I made to someone. It all happened when this person I’m really close to told me about their situation. They needed something and they thought I was in a good place to help out. Honestly, that moment wasn’t a very good time for but I promised to help this person out in about two months time as I was expecting some funds then. Things were cool for the first few weeks until all of the sudden this person called me, telling me that I didn’t want to help them out. Hell, it wasn’t even up to a month after our discussion. While I was trying my best everyday to get this thing for them, this person was also in their comfort zone like a royal expecting me to work magic out of nowhere. I spoke to them and told them it wasn’t even a months time.

I woke up the next day to a text message saying that I didn’t care about that. That sent me into a shock for about 5 minutes. Because this person was being so ducking entitled, pardon my French. I didn’t reply the message. Next thing I new , I was receiving a series of phone calls get this same issue. I just eventually had to pick up and tell them I wasn’t going to be able to keep my promise anymore because this was getting really insane. I mean, I can’t lose my mind because of you one person. If you’re not patient enough then you might as well work your ass off for what you want. And that was the end of it. I did this for my own sanity.

When it comes to people breaking promises they made to me, I’ve had numerous of those but the good thing is that don’t really hold on to promises because I know that anything can happen. I remember one of my friends promising me they weren’t going lie about stuff anymore because we are adults now and no one was going to beat them for speaking the truth. But this friend kept on lying and lying like their life depended on it. At the end of the day, our friendship literally became shaking because I couldn’t handle it anymore.

One thing I’ve learnt from these experiences is that life can take different turns, both good and bad and that’s just it. Trust is broken in the process but sometimes it’s for a good cause.
