The Science of Character: Can We Predict Who a Child Will Become?

(Edited)
As humans, we all have our individual traits and attributes. They say a child’s first point of learning is from his home or those around his that are are his first point of contact and that is very true. Most kids, when growing up learn their first words from their homes. And this is where we see some kids have their first words and sentences to be good ones while others have their to be bad words or sentences. So yes, I do agree with our background as individuals play a role in our individual behaviors.

As we grow, we start to move out into the social world and have more encounters with others. There, we also pick up a thing or two from others and then there’s the point of self discovery. Self discovery is actually a very important phase in the life of every individual because during this period, you get to reassess yourself, build yourself and your habits as well. And the good part of this is that, self discovery is a life long process. Each day, we learn new things about ourselves, both good and bad and we find ways to be better individuals. All of us have gone through that phase and are still in that phase which shows that we can change if we want to.

Speaking of behaviors, we all have our individual behaviors and we all also come from different backgrounds. To some extent, people would argue that one’s behavior is a reflection of his or her background. I agree with that. But we get to a stage in our lives where I wouldn’t make sense to attribute our backgrounds to our behaviours anymore. For example, as children, we are groomed at home and showed the right path to follow. But once we are old enough to make decisions on our own, no one tell us what to do and what not to do. And at this point, I would say an individuals behavior has nothing to do with his or her background but rather what he or she wants to be.

I know people who grew up in good homes but turned out to be drug addicts and what have you at the end of the day. And I’ve equally met people who grew up in broken homes and bad communities and ended up as the best people you’d ever meet or hear about. This to some extent has nothing to do with genetics or family background . This is to say that every individual has a mind of his own. There are some things we learn later realize aren’t good for us and so we take it out of our lives and. Regardless, Some of our traits or attitudes may be genetic or even necessary . But at the end of the day, I believe we have the power to control the narrative about ourselves. The responsibility us ours and ours alone because our life is ours and we get ro decide what we want to do with it.

It's actually very difficult to predict how an Individual will turn out regardless of how they're raised because there are lots of factors that determines their behaviours, from their choice, to their natural or how they're nurture be it by their parents, society or life experience.

I totally agree with you, people have to take responsibility for how they are and not put everything on their environment or upbringing.

What we are now is the reflection of what we should become but not what we have inherited. Our good family does not make us to be good, but we can choose to be one.
