Homework: sacrifice or benefit? [EN/PT]

Homework is a real nuisance for children. It’s boring, who would have thought we’d have to study after class is over! Is this kind of activity really important? Is it acceptable for children to no longer receive homework from now on? Studying full-time, even after school hours have ended, is a reality. Are we on the right track by keeping our children engaged in school activities while they’re at home?

I remember when the last bell of the school day rang. All I wanted was to go home, watch some cartoons before lunch, and play for the rest of the afternoon. Then, I would remember how annoying it was to have to do homework. What I didn’t know at the time was how important it was and how it influenced my life in some ways that I now see as essential to education.

First, homework encourages continuous learning, self-effort, and the pursuit of independence to complete tasks. Of course, parents often help, and that’s another positive point, as it also encourages family teamwork. But doing homework outside of school is an interesting way to seek extra knowledge. This practice also creates a habit and a psychological understanding that doing only the bare minimum is not efficient. If a child is continuously encouraged to apply what they learned in the classroom, they learn, even unconsciously, that they need to do their part, even after the mandatory tasks are completed.

I know, we all know that studying after school is boring, and children just want to play, but in the future, this has a big impact, a positive one that can make a difference in their academic and professional life. No one stands out by doing the bare minimum, no one gets promoted by only doing what's within their working hours. So, in a way, homework is just a rehearsal for what should be done throughout life. These are small "sacrifices" of time that produce results. How can we remove this from the foundation of children's education?

We can’t say that the current educational system in many places, especially in public schools here in Brazil, is ideal. Many methods are outdated and really need to be restructured. But not everything is bad, and homework is indeed important. Removing this extra activity would weaken education. Of course, this alone isn’t enough, but it’s a positive point amid so many outdated practices. Even though this practice has been in place for so long, it still works, it is still important.

Honestly? If homework were removed, my child would still have to study after school. I would personally create homework tasks because I know how much this can positively impact his future life. I believe removing something with so many positive points wouldn’t solve anything. It wouldn’t help and would only encourage the next generation to do the bare minimum and wait for the final bell to live their lives, without the ambition for personal growth.

As lições de casa são um verdadeiro incômodo para as crianças. É chato, quem diria que teria que estudar depois que a aula acabou! Será que esse tipo de atividade é realmente importante? Estudar em tempo integral mesmo o horário da escola ter terminado é uma realidade, será que estamos no caminho certo mantendo nossas crianças com atividades escolares enquanto estão em casa?

Eu me lembro de quando o último sinal da escola tocava. Tudo o que eu mais queria era ir para casa, ver alguns desenhos animados antes do almoço e brincar pelo resto da tarde. Então, eu me lembrava de como era chato ter que fazer trabalho de casa. O que eu não sabia na época é o quanto isso era importante e como isso influenciou minha vida em alguns aspectos que hoje vejo como algo essencial na educação.

Primeiro, a lição de casa estimula o aprendizado contínuo, o esforço próprio e a busca por independência para executar as tarefas. Claro, os pais costumam ajudar, e isso é outro ponto positivo, pois também estimula o trabalho em família. Mas fazer lições fora da escola é uma maneira interessante de buscar conhecimento extra. Essa prática também cria um hábito e uma forma psicológica de entender que fazer apenas o básico não é eficiente. Se uma criança continua estimulada a colocar o que aprendeu em sala de aula em prática, ela aprende, mesmo que inconscientemente, que é necessário fazer sua parte, mesmo depois do obrigatório ter sido feito.

Eu sei, todos sabemos que estudar depois das aulas é chato, e as crianças querem brincar, mas no futuro isso tem um grande impacto, um impacto positivo que pode fazer a diferença na vida acadêmica e profissional. Ninguém se destaca fazendo o básico, ninguém é promovido fazendo apenas aquilo dentro do seu horário. Então, de certa forma, essas lições de casa são apenas um ensaio do que deve ser feito durante toda a vida. São pequenos "sacrifícios" de tempo que geram resultados. Como tirar isso da construção da educação das crianças?

Não podemos dizer que o sistema educacional atual em muitos lugares, principalmente nas escolas públicas aqui do Brasil, é o ideal. Muitos métodos são ultrapassados e realmente precisam de uma reformulação. Mas nem tudo é ruim, e as lições de casa são, sim, importantes. Tirar essa atividade extra é enfraquecer a educação. Claro que apenas isso não é suficiente, mas é um ponto positivo diante de tantas coisas ultrapassadas. Mesmo que essa prática seja aplicada há tanto tempo, ainda funciona, ainda é importante.

Sinceramente? Se as lições de casa fossem retiradas, meu filho teria que estudar depois da escola da mesma forma. Eu criaria os deveres de casa pessoalmente, pois sei o quanto isso pode impactar positivamente sua vida futura. Acredito que retirar algo com tantos pontos positivos não seria solução nenhuma. Isso não ajudaria e só estimularia a futura geração a fazer o básico e esperar o último sino para viver suas vidas, sem a ambição do crescimento pessoal.
