The adjustments that will improve our academic standards.

pexels-photo-8199140.jpeg

Trying to discuss with students on a sensible topic is similar to watching a computer glitch. You've probably been on a glitchy website and you know that it's not an inspiring experience. Yeah! That's exactly how it feels to talk with some students and even some graduates.

An insane number of those in school don't know things you would expect a student at a specific level to know and even when you try to have a random conversation that involves reasoning, you will notice that they still don't have any clue of how to make a point.

Now, if you've noticed any of these, you will be forced to ask; What in the world are y'all learning in school? What do they teach y'all?

I think I'm going to be blunt while talking about Nigeria's educational system because it's a big mess and there is a big need for several sides of it to get refurbished.

At this very moment, several schools in the country are filled with teachers who do not have any business being around school premises. They are just not good enough and they don't even care about giving their best. And that's in addition to the fact that schools now have low academic standards. This is why it's not a surprise that the quality of students in schools is generally becoming worse with each passing year.

So many things are getting messy in the country, but I think the educational system got messed up even before the rest of the systems. This isn't to take away the fact that some schools have a fairly high academic standards. Some teachers break themselves in half just to get their job done. However, most of the schools are heading down the wrong path.

Examination Malpractice is something I want to root out from our educational system.

There is an exam we call WAEC in Nigeria. This is a West African Examination and anyone who finishes High School need to get good grades in that Exam before applying for a Higher Institution. That Examination has been a joke for over a decade and it's a very dirty joke.

This is how it works;

Schools shamelessly compel students to pay an examination malpractice fee before seating for each subject in this Exam. Paying this fee means that on the day of the Exam, you only need to show up and all the answers to the Exam questions will be printed out and shared for students to copy and paste into their answer sheets.

pexels-photo-3862130.jpeg

Yeah! You heard that right!

If you think I'm making this up, think again! Nigerians in here can tell you all about that. This is the trend and that practice is a big disgrace. Also, it can cause a really big downtrend in our educational system. Due to this, students who are in high school no longer pay attention in classes because they know they will just pay for the examination malpractice and all the answers they need will be handed out to them by the same people who taught them.

Now, schools promote that act. Teachers play along. Students love it. Parents pay for it and some parents even withdraw their students from a school once they notice that the school doesn't have that examination malpractice framework.

You see? As far as I'm concerned, rooting out examination malpractice is one of the major things I would like to do in Nigerian schools.

Is there anything I would like to add to our school system?

At the moment, most of the courses we study don't even guarantee an improved standard of living after graduation. If you are not going to school to study a very professional course like Medicine, you probably won't have a good job to do after graduation.

The school system has a knack for regurgitating the same old syllables which offer a parallel knowledge to folks. These syllables might have worked a few decades ago, but a lot has changed in the way of the world since then.

Since that's the case, how about we start teaching students the new trend? It will be nice to update the syllabus and adopt a way of teaching that will encourage students to engage in activities that will shape their minds differently. Teaching them to be avid learners and articulate would surely change the way they see things and make it easier for them to avoid chasing disciplines that are redundant.

By the way, whatever happens with the quality of schools, it's still important for parents to pay good attention to their kids. Every parent has to make sure they play a big part in homeschooling their kids even if they go to the most reputable school in the world.

Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop Or Comma.

That Examination has been a joke for over a decade and it's a very dirty joke.

At this point, I couldn't help but laugh out my worries 😂😂😂

Such a dirty joke🤣...kene, you are just too funny eziokwu..lol
Even students in SS1 already know that they will be helped during waec with just a token. This information alone makes most of them to be lazy...most schools encourages this honestly, even the school I graduated from to the fact the 98% of my clammates was frustrated in one of our waec paper when the external examiners visited with all strictness till Everyone submitted their papers. Come and see failure in that subject..if not for NECO, most of my set would have retook waec.... really a shame!

That's the reality Oooo. And this is feeding the kids a very poor narrative about taking their studies seriously. They won't even pay attention in class because the same teacher teaching would still be the one to come and give them answer in Exam halls.

Examination malpractice is ruining our educational system. The damage is too huge to be imagined.

Thanks so much for the curation 🙂

Examination malpractice is running in students life because they believe they will help them in their exams.
Institutions also they do examination malpractice and if they were caught the will face the panel.

When it comes to WAEC and others in its Caliber, examination malpractice has become a culture. It is a funny trick for example, WAEC does not properly mark exam scripts or maybe it is intentionally or lack of workers as a result of that there is mass failure in WAEC most times.

For schools, they don't want to destroy the reputation of their school by having their ss3 students fail WAEC instead they prefer to pay WAEC officials to have things go their way, this money is collected from the students and parents who have no choice but to pay to avoid their children resitting for WAEC. It seems like worthy sacrifice to pay for the greater good. So tell me, who is causing the issue is it WAEC, schools, students, or parents?

That's the truth. The ripple effect is already on and it's not easy to trace where the issue started. However, we can all see the repercussion at the moment.

Many students are now complacent about their studies. They know they will get everything set on the table for them during their WAEC. I can hardly imagine how it will feel for a teacher to teach and still be the one to give students answers in an Exam. I was in the teaching industry and It wouldn't have been an acceptable compromise for me.

As for Schools, they can do better. I know schools that don't compromise on that standard and their students still do well in WAEC.

Parents too... They pay for Malpractice and tomorrow they will expect their kid to turn to some genius.

The whole system is rigged. That's fairly understandable. Nobody wants to be left behind. However, what they see as a little sacrifice today usually blows out of proportion in the near future.

I'm not even surprised whenever I see a student or graduate that isn't articulate enough to share his/her thought on topics. It's the outcome of the path he/she chose, thanks to WAEC, schools, parents, teachers and also to him/her.

They all have to take the blame. Haha.

From your analysis, it is obvious that you have an experience being a teacher. I'm also aware of schools that doesn't compromise but how many of such schools do we have these days.

Hopefully some day the educational system will receive divine intervention because presently I don't see how examination malpractice will be abolished.

You are on point Bro. There are still some schools that try to maintain the high standards and I know they sacrifice so much to do that. They also face the risk of losing some of their students. The problem is that majority of the schools no longer care about this and they are moving with the trend.

It's really nice to explore this discussion with you. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this.

I went to a secondary school that had zero tolerance for examination malpractice and when I mean zero, I mean the slightest copying could get you expelled. It was terrible for a lot of people but being there for 6 years and it's something I and others who've gone through the process can beat their chest and say that they can never be dependent in any exams.

So I believe that it's something that would need dedication to implement in other schools but I know it's achievable nonetheless.

I attended a secondary school that is similar to the one you described. We even had a fail and fail-out framework in the school so anyone that fails to meet the grade required would not be promoted to the next class. In worst cases, the person can get kicked out from the school.

I only spent the first 4 years of my secondary School education there, but the discipline I learnt there made it impossible for me to be dependent on anyone throughout the exams I wrote from there onwards. Even when I wrote WAEC, JAMB... everything. I never for once looked sideways to get any support from anyone while writing Exam.

I thought it's only around my place that this drama is going on, so it's nation wide? I personally witness this in one of the centers I went to write WAEC. We were asked to pay for assistance during the examination, I and three other friends of mine refused to pay and refused to partake in the act. the school management got angry with us, some of the staff called us all sort of names. It was such an experience, like you said, answers were printed on papers and shared to students by teachers during examination. The painful part is, supervisors that are supposed to be against these things also back them up as soon as they are given little bribe.

This is part of the reasons why, whenever I see someone in college who doesn't know how to spell his/her name, it doesn't freak me. Our educational system has fallen. Now It's left for parents to put extra effort to train their children at home. Depending totally on schools to do the needful is very risky.

This is so true and it is very sad that you are one of those that had that rough experience. This exam malpractice that is being promoted in this country is a very shameful act and they end up punishing those that actually spent time to read and learn.

Both the teachers that write answers for them, the school management that enforce the practice of exam malpractice, the parents that support this by making payments, the invigilators that turn a blind eye to the practice, and even the student that flow with this malpractice... The repercussion always awaits all of them.

You did well Bro. We all cannot embrace that bullshit.
