My 'Big Bro' Role: A role I happily play to a tee.

I've heard people narrate their experiences about how it feels to be an only child in a family and this is an experience that has a bittersweet taste.

On one hand, it's almost as if people like that have a very special relationship with their parents and the younger version of myself will surely envy the kinda love and attention they get for being an only child. Haha. You must have seen how their parents buy 'everything' for them.

Who wouldn't want that?

Well, there is more to this story and I'm sure you know it. Being an only child also has a rough side to it. If you are the only child in the family, there will be no one to call your brother and no one to call your sister. I would never fully understand what it's like to be an only child, but I think it's fairly obvious that there are moments when loneliness catches up with them pretty quickly.

In my case, I'm not just blessed with a sibling. I'm blessed with adorable siblings who are growing massively in Character and knowledge.

I'm born into a family of five kids, two able-bodied & intellectually strong guys, and 3 smart and intelligent ladies. We all had the pleasure of growing up under the watchful and caring eyes of both parents and I'm still very glad that both of our parents are alive and resiliently trying to make ends meet.

I'm the first child of the family and my parents have careers which they had to take very seriously in both rainfall and sunshine. It's necessary because we can't afford to depend on the income of only one parent and they knew it. Because of the workload on their hands, a huge chunk of being the caretaker fell on me. I had to take care of my younger siblings whenever my parents are away and I had to do the same whenever we are in school or any playground.

It wasn't an easy experience, but taking up that responsibility at a very tender age played a huge part in making me the type of person I am today. Whenever I look at my siblings in their current endeavours, I'm always proud of them and I'm also proud of myself for satisfactorily playing my 'Big Brother' role to this very point.

Have I ever wished I had more or less siblings?

I guess it's confession time, isn't it? Hehe.

I love my siblings so much and I enjoy being the first child of the family, but there were moments when I pushed myself to a point where I wish there is someone else that comes before me. Yeah, there were times I wish I had an older sibling. Someone that will be the adult while I enjoy the privilege of having a Big Sis or Big Bro.

When I was in school, I had some friends who have old siblings that were already earning a living and they enjoyed the privilege of calling their older siblings for financial support, advice and other sorts of support. I never got a taste of what it feels like to be in that position. And, I know it's one of those things I will never get a taste of in this lifetime.

Guess what?

As I grew older, I began to gain wider experience and I now have a completely different view about the whole thing. I won't dig into the details (cus you know the devil is always in the details). However, I wouldn't trade my position in the family for anything. And, I'm glad about the number of siblings I have... No addition or subtraction. Haha.

No addition no subtraction......! Lolz. In a family of 5 sibilings, it is what I suppose to hear. No subtraction because we love them all. No addition because there is no more need.

Hmmmm. The best thing about you is that you are proud of what you did. I have seen cases where the oldest child has more regrets than that of pride. It is destructive.

Being a care taker demands so much and costs so much. Resilience and forgiveness are the characteristics that are needed. You have them both.

I'm so glad that we've all grown to a point where my siblings do not allow me to talk too much about anything. All of them know what's right and they do it in most cases. Haha.

Being elderly and the caretaker of the family is a tough responsibility. I 'm also holding my family when my father is in foreign. You don't want to add or subtract family members, it is funny 😂.

I understand what it feels like to be the first child, it can be really challenging and make you wish that you are either the only child or the youngest.

The wahala is too much but there is joy in the end when you see your younger ones growing beautifully under your watch.

Being the only child can indeed be boring, imagine having to do all the house chores alone because your parents are working effortlessly to give you the best life. I am satisfied with the numbers and gender, great post.

My siblings would call for support most times but who would I call ?

It was beautiful reading this.
I'm not the first born but I can relate - to some extent - with the longing to have an older sibling. Someone that has experienced some struggles before you and makes the way a little bit easier for you. I wish I had someone like that when I first started schooling in Uni.

But, as you know, the joy of being an older sibling is in the little things you do for your younger ones. Being the one to pave the way for them, or providing for them in any way you can. It just gives one this feeling of satisfaction.

My regards to you and your siblings. Being the first born and Son is definitely not easy. Kudos to you for handling the Big Bro role like a champ!

It's not easy to do all these, but like you said, the joy of being in that position comes from being the trailblazer for the younger siblings. Hehe. It's something I've come to enjoy as my siblings grew older and wiser. Their character is something I cherish so much and, at the moment, I don't need to say anything around them. Everyone knows what's right and they do that. Hehe.

I don't think there is a person with siblings that hasn't at one point or the other wished to be an only child and I'm no exception but siblings will always be a blessing to me and I'm glad to have them, even though they could be terribly annoying. Lol

Becoming the caretaker of your younger siblings is an amazing role to have. You grow old faster in terms of experience and understand more about life in general. I'm somewhere in the middle with one older sibling and one younger sibling. I more or less play the role of a mediator :)

I think I can glimpse the angel on the details but I guess the devil is a bit more powerful 😂

Being an only child is tough when you're introvert, have a limited social battery and it's even harder when you have aging parents or when your parents pass,its just you with those memories.

It's such a great thing to hear you took up all of your responsibility.

Yes ooooo. It wasn't an easy job, but I'm very proud of all of them. Every one of them and I miss having all of us together under the same roof again so we can relieve Mum of her duty Ang just have her smile and laugh while we take care of things. Hehe.
