Life on A Trajectory; Passing through school got me this far.
I know from experience that whenever there is a conversation about school experience, it's either going to be some fond schooling memories or some memories we wouldn't want to experience again. In today's discussion, we will be edging towards the fairly inspiring side of the duo.
Is there something you enjoyed as a Student? It has to be something you wouldn't have gotten if you weren't a student.
That's what we have to talk about and I see this as a very easy ask. I had a similar discussion with someone a few days ago and the major talking point that led us to the discussion is the current overused statement; "School Is Scam". Tell me this isn't your first time hearing that.
In all honesty, it isn't hard to see why something like this would be up for discussion. The reasons are very clear and one of the obvious ones in my part of the world is the fact that many graduates are said to be 'unemployable' by employers. Only goodness knows what they mean by that. Meanwhile, those who tick the box and are capable of getting employed end up being underemployed or unemployed in most cases.
I won't dwell too much on this, but I'm sure there are so many things that make school unenticing to folks. Some even see it as a waste of time, money and other resources. However, in the midst of all these, I'm glad I went through school and I'm glad I have a Bachelor of Science certificate although I'm not using that Cert for anything.
Now, this begs the question;
What's the thing I got as a student which I wouldn't have learned if I didn't go to school?
The ability to Read.
The ability to Write.
A Good knowledge of English Language.
Nigeria is quite sophisticated to the point that all academic activities we do in school, starting from kindergarten level to the highest academic status you can think of, are done in a foreign language. I started learning the English alphabet on my first day as a student and it somehow became something I saw as a trivial exercise after spending almost 20 years of my life as a student in the academic setting.
I know how to speak good English. I can articulate my thoughts and pen them down in English and I can comprehend texts written in English. I assumed this was something everyone was capable of doing. So, I never saw it as a valuable skill until I started travelling all over the country. During each of my travel experiences, I met so many people whose native languages are incomprehensible to me.
English was the only common conversational ground that could exist with such people and a lot of them found it hard to hold conversations in English. The language barrier had a huge impact when I worked in the marketing unit of a Commercial Bank in the northern part of the Country. You can only imagine how relieved I felt whenever I had to deal with a customer who knew how to hold conversations in English language.
The best part of my knowledge of the English language is visible in my day-to-day activity as a Content Creator. I wouldn't have even considered getting into this space if I didn't have a fairly decent knowledge of the usage of English. Now, I can earn by writing, reading and interacting with folks in English.
Would I have been able to learn these if I didn't go through school?
Nah! I grew up in Anambra State where almost everyone speaks Igbo, the native language of Anambrarians. All the friends I had while growing up spoke our native language and the same was applicable in my home. We speak our native language at home and there are so many benefits to that.
This means that the only time I ever got to speak English was in school environment. Even in school environment, many of us had to be fined for speaking Igbo before we decided to start making attempts to speak English. Up to this very moment, whenever I travel to the East, I usually bid farewell to English because most of my conversations there are in my native language.
So, I'm very sure that if I didn't pass through school, it would have been really hard for me to be living the life I'm living now which involves a great understanding of English language. I mean, look at the conversation we all have when interacting here. We certainly do what we do without being worried of language barrier because we have a fairly decent understanding of English Language.
Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop Or Comma.

Truth be told, school isn't a scam. We sometimes miss the reality that school doesn't offer everything. We're way better being educated and exposed, thanks to school. And just like you, speaking, writing, and reading English is not a problem, and that's helpful today that I would have imagined when I started going to school.
Exactly. School may not guaranteed employment opportunities, but we are way better being educated compared to not being educated.
The things I'm doing now were never in the list of things I imagined myself doing when I was studying in school. However, the fact that I'm able to do all these is all thanks to the fact that I'm educated enough. Hehe
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this 👍.
There is a great difference in speaking English language between someone who went to school and someone who didn't. Being a student has given us such a big opportunity even if we do not use the certificate to feed, but being able to express ourselves, thoughts and articulate idea is something beneficial.
That's true. This is one of the bright side of going to school and there is so much more. It's just hard for some people to see this, but there is an undeniable benefit attached to passing through formal education.
That is the truth.
Why did I laugh to this? 😂 See me thinking it's only Delta that has a "N" for the people in it 🤣
Learning English when you've lived a few years speaking your tribe, is definitely going to be a bit more tasking than those already good in it.
In all, school got it's pros and cons. We just live through it and appreciate the ones we gained.
Hahah... Leave that N alone oooo. It's meant to be shared equally, but some states are too stubborn. Haha.
School truly has its pros and cons and there is no doubt that going to school can turn out to be a waste of time and effort for some. But for others, it can help set their life straight. Haha
Enjoy the weekend.
Haha I've left it alone o 😅
Enjoy your weekend too 🙌
Education isn't a scam and people who think it is don't know what they are missing out on because they will never take education important which means they are automatically missing out on the knowledge they need to change their lives.
Education is important and being able to acquire it has helped you a lot in life. There is a difference between going to school and acquiring knowledge, you did the real thing and your content is your proof.
That's true, Bro. Education becomes ineffective in situations where someone that's opportuned to gain education ends up seeing it as a scam. But for someone that genuinely wants to see the value in it, the person will end up gaining so much through education.
I'm glad I gained something through mine. All those years of study didn't go to waste. Hehe.

Thanks so much. Hehe. You and the team are amazing
And you’re very welcome!! 😁♥️
I love this
What most people failed to understand is that, they thought going to school gives you a well paying job only, this is just part of the benefits of school
The most important benefits are the three things you have mentioned and I love them all, if not for school, I wouldn't have known how to read, write and communicate fluently. I am happy I went to school infact, sometimes I miss school
Exactly. A well paying job is just a fraction of the benefits attached to going to school. There are more benefits attached to being learned and it's sad that even those who are learned fail to see that.
School is a necessity. Just like a scholar once said "if education is expensive, try ignorance." Just imagine someone in this age who doesn't know how to read nor write, the shame of that alone would make that person regret making a huge mistake as not acquiring knowledge when his mates were.
That's the truth. School is expensive and it's getting more expensive. But like you said, being ignorant and unlearned is more expensive and it's really hard to thrive in this era without any sort of education.
You said it all, I too would havee known how to read without going to school, I think people say school is a scam because, after schooling, it is hard to get a job.
#dreemerforlife
That's the truth. People focus on the job side of getting a certificate. However, there is more benefits attached to passing through school that that
Attending school really taught one a great lot, from learning foreign language - English, being able to write and speak.
I can imagine how it was por you to work in the North where even a graduate cannot speak simful English. 😂
#dreemerforlife
Haha... I sight your Igbo greeting oooo. Udo dị. Haha
Working in the North was a a very rough experience because of the language barrier. If not for the existence of English, only God knows how I would have managed to interact with people over there. Hehe
But why are you not using the Cert for anything? Emphasis on 'anything'🤔
All your points as to why people consider school is scam are valid.
It isn't the same with other countries right?
Well, going to school might be scam in Nigeria but we still have something to show for it as you stated.
#dreemport led me here😊
Omoh... My Cert is still not put to any use at the moment. Interestingly, it also wasn't a big deal when I was working in a Bank. I didn't particularly enjoy the work so, I decided to leave that sector and dig into other areas of life.
Back when I was looking for International Jobs, the School Certificate would have come in handy. But, at the moment, it's just not in use.
Hmm, okay.
Well, if an opportunity comes for an internet job, it would be pit to good use. Right?
It depends on what someone is looking. At the moment, the international opportunities that will likely catch my fancy would be more interested in aha I can and how I speak in an interview.
Anything about bringing some Uni Certificate wouldn't be relevant to the recruitment process.

I will be honest and say School is very necessary. If not for the lectures but the environment. I grew up in an English school . Maybe that’s why I can’t speak my native tongue. But safe to say, that the beginning of learning starts from those four walls.
Came in through Dreemport
Yeah. People still see school as a scam because they want to pass through school and get a good paying job through the Certificate they got from school. That would have been a very good thing though. But, the reality is different and we just have to look beyond that to see other benefits attached to passing through school.
