Happy with the purchase?

One of the things you do when you have money and you want to spend that money is to make sure you are spending that money on things that are worth it.

Even if you decide to go out and sprinkle that money on some hardworking folks in the boondocks, as long as you are satisfied with the feeling you get from those expenses and you don't feel like you wasted your money, that will always tick as money well spent.

Well, I didn't even know there was something called "a happy purchase" until I saw the writing prompt from the Hive Learners folks. I looked it up on Google and I have a lot of experience to share about that. While on it, I will also share an experience of a moment when I spent money on something that ended up being worthless.

Let's dive in already...

My moments of being happy with my purchase;

The easy things to pick in this arena are my gadgets because I pay very good attention to details when I'm getting a gadget. I also do really good research to get the best quality out of any gadget I'm spending money on. Things like phone, laptop, power bank, earpiece, and co. These are the things I use daily and they are also connected to my income.

For example, the phone I bought on 5th December 2020 is still very clean, active, and functioning well. I bought the phone in less than a month after it became accessible in Nigeria and I've used that phone every day since then until November 2023. The only maintenance I give the phone is to change the screen guard when it gets a crack. The 6000mAh battery is still very clean.

I had to get another phone in November 2023 and I will be handing over the one I've been using to someone special. Mumcy doesn't even know she will be getting the phone, but she will receive it ASAP.

For me, I don't buy fairly used gadgets. I'm always the first to use them when they are factory made and I spend huge to get the gadgets that are fit for purpose. I use the same approach when I'm getting all my electrical appliances. Remember when I bought a deep freezer in November 2023? What about when I got a new laptop in the second half of last year?

All of those have been fit for purpose. I'm happy with that purchase.

The moment I made disappointing expenses;

Does house rent count?

I once paid a yearly rent for an apartment but ended up spending just 6 months in the place before relocating. I sure didn't do my research well before paying for that and the property owner turned out to be someone that has a vicious sense of humor when telling lies. I faced a lot of damage before finally decided to go on a house hunt. I'm now living in a place that is so much better and more comfortable.

Here's is a recent incident; The chair in my working space became unfit for purpose and I had a lot of expenses piling up because Christmas was around the corner and I had a lot of things I wanted to buy before then. I also had to travel back home and do some stuff for my family. I knew I needed to get a chair I would use in my working space, but I wasn't ready to squeeze out #40,000 at that point. I ended up using #8000 to get a plastic chair. Lol.

That was the worst spending decision I made last year. The chair was a mismatch to my working space. Aside from that, it also wasn't fit for purpose. I could only use it for 2½ months. Immediately New Year came, I went on 2nd January and got a proper chair for my working space. I paid #53,500 for it and I'm sure it would have been cheaper if I got the same chair a few months back.

That's pretty much all I will be sharing for now.

Thanks For Not Missing Any Full-stop or Comma.

We've one thing in common for sure... gadgets!!

Wait, I bought phone for my mom recently... Looks like we have more than one thing in common. Kene, we living in a simulation. 🫡

Man we don't have yearly rents here... That sounds like a bad experience, why didn't owner returned money? Like you spent 6 months, so get the money back for the extra 6 months..

Hahah... You also got phone for your Mum? Haha. Brother. This must be a parallel world 😂😂. That's a very good gesture.

I'm looking forward to sending the one I have to my Mum. She needs a phone very urgently and I need to send it across a 12 hours journey from where I am to where my Mum stays. Hehe.

We pay yearly rent here in Nigeria. It's really tough. I will have to renew another yearly rent in June. I'm already saving up for that. Hehe

Yeaaah, just last month.

Man I'm sure she will !LUV that phone and seeing mom smile is the priceless feeling.

So, you're also going to see her? Or ya at work?

We gotta become rish to buy our own house and get riddance from paying rents.

Haha... I really have my eyes on buying my own house. Rent is too much and it comes so fast. Once I get enough money to buy a house, I will do that ASAP.

About Mum's phone, I can't even travel back home any time soon. I would have to send it through the courier service of a transport Company.

Haha on the plastic chair.

I did that when I moved into my first apartment as the previous tenant left nothing. They even took the lightbulbs!

I can guarantee that a cheap plastic chair makes absolutely no-one happy with the possible exception of if its the only chair available in a hot, humid waiting room. Then perhaps its acceptable :)

Still thinking about buying only new tech. I certainly understand your point on that. Buying 2nd hand and old tech means you are often getting something "behind the times" and of questionable value. Having said that in Canada I think buying second hand devices can be a better option than in Nigeria. I got a Samsung S20FE for my wife about a year and a half ago. At that time I was able to pick up a mint condition 1yr old phone for about 25% of the price of new ($1200 new, purchased for $300 in Canadian dollars). The seller gave a 6 month warranty and my credit card doubled that to one year -- the same as if purchased new. Even today the S20FE holds up nicely as a device. It links wirelessly to watch movies on the TV. It has Samsung DEX so I can use it with keyboard, mouse, and printer as if it was a computer. Battery holds a good charge, camera takes good pictures, etc.

I think the economics or people buying and trading in perfectly good premium phones after only a year changes the economics of buying used here. Couple that with strong warranties even on second hand units...makes things a little different.

From what I've heard about Nigeria....its very much pay your money and take your chances. In that situation I think you are right. Get something with a pedigree and warranty...save the hassle later.

Thanks for posting.

Exactly. Over here in Nigeria, even when you buy something new with carton and they offer a year warranty, it's best to hope you won't ever have any reason to make use of the warranty. Most of the time, the warranty offered for products are mere marketing strategy. It doesn't really work and a lot of us are not financially built to take legal actions. That's why we all have a "buyer beware" approach to everything we buy.

It makes things even worse for second hand products. Most of the time, second hand gadgets are usually stolen items. You may buy one at a very cheap price in Nigeria, but that can land you in a lot of legal problems on the long run.

There was a time when I enjoyed buying gadgets online, but I can't even risk that anymore. Haha. A lot of transactions done over here are filled with dishonesty. We just hope to, at the very least, get things that are fairly worth the price we paid for it.

Its a human instinct that sometimes we got a very perfect thing but sometimes we don't. And we have to fix them later.

Getting a better gadget is the best, not the fairly used one that can shock the living life out of someone, I am happy for your Mum at least she will be on all social media. #dreemerforlife

I think we all have had bad days. What do I do? I bury the memories to minimize the pain. Hehe

There is nothing as sweet as purchasing something you are so pleased with. Each time you remember, it gladens your heart.
