A TOKEN FOR A FORTUNE: risks of Gambling

I guess there is an addiction to gambling. Gamblers usually feel the urge and nudge to try again, and the worst scenario is when they win a few bets; they intensify efforts to aim for the crown of winning, which is often hundreds of thousands or millions. A little diversion to risk and probability. Gamblers go beyond 1:10, probably, but can go as high as 1:1,000, 1:10,000, 1:100,000, or even 1:1,000,000 at winning. The winning ratio to losing is very low, and there is a high disparity in comparison with the efforts that were put into it, which goes beyond the finances but also the emotions and even time. I know a lady friend who surprisingly engaged in gambling about a year ago. I rebuked her fervently back then, only for her to tell me yesterday in passing that she was in a big trouble sequel to betting, which she involved herself in. All I could say was 'alright,' determined not to flog the issue she had been forewarned. Perhaps the addiction of gambling yet got a grip on her. In a similar vein, my friend came visiting some months back and used my number as a referral, of which I began to receive updates as text messages.

Gambling has, without argument, enriched a few lucky ones, but what's that a success when you rob Paul, Andrew, and Mathew just to pay Paul? Leaving the majority as losers while giving a few some tiny winnings? At least I know there's a ministry, the National Lottery Regulatory Commission, probably institutionalized to promote and regulate lotteries, jackpots, and games of luck in Nigeria. Of course, ensuring tax is paid to the federal government must be one of the mandates of the organization, if I am not mistaken. This organization respects the interest of the majority who place bets with a token to get a fortune and attempts to regulate their income, tax, or maybe excesses. I believe beyond the unchecked emotions (such as compulsive disorders, greed, etc.) and desire to keep gambling, in addition to the scourging and ailing financial crises.

I know life cannot be fair to all but, the huge discrepancy and disparities in wealth distribution is significantly unfair. Dare I say that more people are being tricked or lured into worsening financial crises as a result of gambling? Money that could be channeled into feeding, tuition for the kids, or even in a legitimate investment is being put into a high-risk venture with likely unpleasant dire consequences, of which some can be life-threatening, such as suicidal tendencies.

Thus, without prejudice, bias, or disenfranchisement, I would readily agree that gambling should be made illegal, as the ills of the majority far exceed the gains by a minority, often based on probability or luck.
