How cool VR is?

  Not long ago, I started to see video game platforms starting to sell Virtual Reality (VR) headsets. That is something that I saw in many sci-fi movies. One movie that I remember watching in VR that appears a lot is Tron. A hacker who gets stuck in the virtual world. So I always made an association of VR technology and an upgrade to the video game experience. Before you had joysticks and a TV in front of you. Now you are inside the video game, being part of it. But I was shocked to see VR usage in other areas.

  I am accustomed to taking a visual campimetry test every time I visit an optometrist. The test is like a video game and tests the accuracy of different angles of your vision. You sit and put your face in a machine with one of your eyes closed and start clicking the button when you see some light spots. I was surprised when I changed the optometrist that I had been going to for 3 years. In this new clinic, they had this exam made in a VR device. You use a headset and you see a 360-degree environment instead of putting your head in a static device. It works similarly, still using a button when you notice the lights, but it is more comfortable.

  Another usage for VR in the professional world is the capability of training in simulated worlds. When I was younger, I was amazed when they released a game called Flight Simulator, which was a 100% accurate flight simulator, and we could fly a Boeing in a computer in a real-time flight. Now this simulator can be used in VR devices, so you can be trained to fly with a similar game, but using the headset, feeling like you are in an airplane. That should be a nice experience. It can also be used in other careers where we play with life and death, like a surgery in medical school. Now, students can simulate surgeries without killing real beings. Military and police using it to train tactical strategies in special operations is also another advantage; if you fail, you won't die in the real world.

  VR headsets are also being offered at zoos and museums to give visitors other types of experiences. When I last visited the Calgary zoo, they had a VR experience in one part of the zoo where you could choose the experience. My daughter and I chose to experience scuba diving with sharks. We sat in a chair and we wore the headset. The chair started to move in multiple directions following the video experience. It was an interesting experience. I know that there is also an exposition in Calgary, as well they have changed the VR experience. Recently, they had a real walk into a pyramid using VR, so you wear the headset and start walking inside an Egyptian pyramid. The same exposition had a dinosaur-era VR experience in the past. It is expensive, but maybe one day I will try it.

  Still owning a VR device isn't on my list to buy, but I am already using it in medical exams or even in zoos or museums. Maybe in the future I will own one to play some games at home, but now I am too busy with my small kids who demand a lot. And for sure, VR technology has changed a lot the training for certain careers without risking any life. It is indeed an interesting technology and willing to see more around.

Um filme que me lembro de assistir em RV aparece bastante é Tron. Um hacker que fica preso no mundo virtual. Então, sempre associei a tecnologia de RV a uma atualização da experiência dos videogames. Antes, você tinha joysticks e uma TV na sua frente. Agora você está dentro do videogame, fazendo parte dele. Mas fiquei chocado ao ver o uso da RV em outras áreas.

  Estou acostumado a fazer um teste de campimetria visual toda vez que vou a um optometrista. O teste é como um videogame e testa a precisão de diferentes ângulos de visão. Você se senta e coloca o rosto em uma máquina com um dos olhos fechado e começa a clicar no botão quando vê alguns pontos de luz. Fiquei surpreso quando troquei de optometrista que eu frequentava há 3 anos. Nesta nova clínica, eles fizeram esse exame em um dispositivo de VR. Você usa um headset e vê um ambiente de 360 graus em vez de colocar a cabeça em um dispositivo estático. Funciona de forma semelhante, ainda usando um botão quando você percebe as luzes, mas é mais confortável.

  Outro uso da RV no mundo profissional é a capacidade de treinar em mundos simulados. Quando eu era mais jovem, fiquei impressionado quando lançaram um jogo chamado Flight Simulator, que era um simulador de voo 100% preciso, e podíamos pilotar um Boeing em um computador em tempo real. Agora, esse simulador pode ser usado em dispositivos de RV, então você pode ser treinado para voar com um jogo semelhante, mas usando o headset, sentindo-se como se estivesse em um avião. Deve ser uma experiência agradável. Também pode ser usado em outras carreiras onde brincamos com a vida e a morte, como uma cirurgia na faculdade de medicina. Agora, os alunos podem simular cirurgias sem matar seres reais. Militares e policiais usando-a para treinar estratégias táticas em operações especiais também é outra vantagem; se você falhar, não morrerá no mundo real.

  Óculos de realidade virtual (RV) também estão sendo oferecidos em zoológicos e museus para dar aos visitantes outros tipos de experiências. Quando visitei o zoológico de Calgary pela última vez, eles tinham uma experiência de RV em uma parte do zoológico onde você podia escolher a experiência. Minha filha e eu escolhemos experimentar mergulho com tubarões. Sentamos em uma cadeira e usamos o fone de ouvido. A cadeira começou a se mover em várias direções após a experiência do vídeo. Foi uma experiência interessante. Eu sei que também há uma exposição em Calgary, pois eles mudaram a experiência de RV. Recentemente, eles fizeram uma caminhada real em uma pirâmide usando RV, então você usa o fone de ouvido e começa a andar dentro de uma pirâmide egípcia. A mesma exposição teve uma experiência de RV da era dos dinossauros no passado. É caro, mas talvez um dia eu experimente.

  Ainda não estou pensando em comprar um dispositivo de RV, mas já o utilizo em exames médicos ou até mesmo em zoológicos ou museus. Talvez no futuro eu tenha um para jogar em casa, mas agora estou muito ocupada com meus filhos pequenos, que exigem muito. E, com certeza, a tecnologia de RV mudou muito o treinamento para certas carreiras sem arriscar vidas. É realmente uma tecnologia interessante e que ainda precisa ser mais explorada.
