My Sentiment About Private And Public Schools.
I applaud the efforts of parents who see education as a priority in the world today and the availability of public schools have made things easy to an extent for parents who can't afford the extravagant fee of private schools.
It is so disheartening that in many of the public schools, they treat student below expectations probably because the teaching and non-teaching staff feels that since it is free education, they don't have to put in much effort.
It was my wish to attend a public school in my junior school but the stigma attached made my mom turn down my wish. She always told me that she attended public school as well but not like what we had about two decades ago. During that time, what we always hear about public school was horrible. I eventually made friends with public school students and realized that they aren't bad, it's just impossible not to have bad eggs among them.
Somehow, public school today has improved compared to what we had back then and I don't see anything wrong with parents enrolling their children in public school today.
I attended a private school all through my life not because my mom was rich but because she was scared of public school and there were very cheap private schools she can afford.
I won't deny the fact that I enjoyed attending a private school because we weren't overcrowded in the class and we had enough teachers. The only thing I always crave was competition because the competition in private schools isn't much.
Imagine taking the first position with 75% when there are just twenty students in the class. I find the competition really soft and sometimes, many of us weren't inspired except we were challenged.
My first term in a class with over forty students in a class didn't end well because I failed to realize that the challenge had changed.
I ended up in the 9th position with 77% and it was then I realized that I needed to sit up. I value healthy competition and that was the major thing I wish I got more in private schools.
Aside from the lack of real competition, the private schools I attended were active in practicals and social activities of all kinds. We always attend competitions and I do represent the school in quizzes, debates, and even Interhouse sports.
The schools environment were conducive to an extent even though it wasn't the best. Classrooms were spacious and we have the necessary amenities we needed. Since we weren't much, teachers were able to monitor and attend to students individually when they had challenges.
In terms of teaching, we had qualified teachers and that's one of the things my mom always investigated before enrolling her children in schools so I definitely had a good time attending a private school.
Despite the benefits of attending private schools, I see a few shortcomings that are affecting the level of education in the country at the moment.
The system of students not failing in private schools is a terrible thing and the aftermath of it is not a good thing. Today, we hear of mass failures in school and rejected results for many external examinations which I can confidently say many of the students not doing well in these exams are from private schools.
People believe private schools are the best and they made this conclusion just because of their neatness, spoken English, and results. All these things count but when you look deeply into the system, you will realize that many private schools aren't helping their students.
The fear of losing students won't make many private schools fail their students and that's not helping students to get better. They patch results and allow students who are not meant to leave a particular class to go to the next class and it doesn't bother them as long as they are getting school fees.
They go as far as patching them by bribing invigilators during exams like Waec, Gce, and others. The students will definitely pass but when they have nothing to the students anymore, it is then you will realize the true capability of the student.
The same year I paid 4500 for Waec, and some private schools in my vicinity paid 18,000 just to cover their flaws. Patching up results for the benefit of the school needs to be stopped so that students will see the need to study hard for good results.
The school we attend is not the issue, the most important thing is children getting adequate education whether in private or public school. The society today has gone beyond asking if you attend a private or public school, what many organizations ask is what you have to offer.
Sure the school we attended doesn't matter as long as we have the kind of life we wanted.
But I still prefer public school anyways not because of anything but because there are lots of lesson a child can learn there
Everyone is free and the fee is affordable for those parents that are not financially ok.
Unlike public school that is expensive in every aspect
Both public and private comes with their benefit, I wouldn't want to condemn any because I have seen through both system and I hope that the people in charge of the school can take the necessary measures into improving the standards of education in the country.
That's true anyways
You are so right, competition in private is not much compared to public schools where there are like hundred students in a class and they are competing to be the best, it's not easy,I love private school and public school too, they both have their advantages and disadvantages.
There are brilliant students in private schools but during my time in some of the private schools I went to, it was easy for me to just dominate the class.
I didn't have any reason to work hard since I was getting the first position but when I went to a private school with lots of students, I saw the need to study hard.
Competition for grades is healthy among students and it helps them to work hard on their studies.

Private schools are good but I don't like too much restrictions and rules of the private schools. In our country, students need to compete to admit in a public school. Those schools don't provide huge facility but they always choose the best students and that things create differences between a public and private school here and the result of public school is always better than private school.
I love the competition in the public setting and that's the major reason why I wanted to attend a public school while growing up.
Without doubt public school is the best considering the fee, challenge that prepares students for the future and the government just need a few patching improve the quality of things like learning environment and others .
