Delicious Ogbono Soup For Creative Sunday.
Welcome the Hive Learners Creative Sunday Initiative with George Dee. As usual, I will show you guys something special from my kitchen.
For this creative Sunday, I made Ogbono Soup. It is popularly referred to as draw soup and many Nigerians enjoy it with different swallow meals. The slippery nature of the soup makes it favourite for many kids as they enjoy how it helps them drive their meal down into the stomach without any struggle.
I love Ogbono a lot but there are times when I choose Okro over it because draws better. The soup originated from the Igbos and from my experience, they prepare it better. There are different approaches to preparing the nutritious Ogbono Soup and I will show the simplest of them all which is a low-budget Ogbono Soup.

- Fish
- Cowskin
- Crayfish
- Onion
- Chilli powder
- Palm oil
- Seasoning
- Bitter leaf
Preparation
As usual, the first thing to do is clean all our recipes properly. Let’s remember to keep proper hygiene so that we can have a sumptuous and healthy meal at the same time.
I started by blending the crayfish, chilli powder and onions.
It’s not necessary to use chilli powder, you can use the normal red pepper which is even better because it would make the soup very thick. Blending the three things I mentioned earlier is what I used for my pepper and it was good.
I heated the pan and poured some Palm oil into the hot pot, I added onion and the cowskin to fry for about a minute under low heat before turning the pepper into the hot oil as well.
I added the fish and stirred gently to make sure the fish sat well and also doesn’t get broken. I added salt, seasoning cubes and pepper soup powder and covered the pot for the soup to cook.
After a few minutes, I poured the Ogbono powder and stirred again. I didn’t cover the soup after adding the powder so that it doesn’t lose the slippery nature and also reduced the heat.
I added the bitter leaf exactly a minute after and turned off the heat about thirty seconds later.
Ogbono is simple to prepare and cheap depending on what recipe you choose to use. Instead of fish, you can use beef or chicken, you can add stock fish and lots of vegetables if you prefer it that way.
The soup is nutritious and having lots of protein in it will definitely take things to a whole new level. A lot of people are just in for the slippery nature not knowing how rich the soup is in calcium, iron and other nutrients.
As I mentioned earlier, it goes practically with all swallow meals but it is best served with fufu. I started losing interest in Eba at some point for some reason and Ogbono or Okro are the soups that would make me eat Eba. I just need to put the meal in my mouth and let the soup handle the rest.
I know quite a few people who don’t eat the soup because they have attached some spiritual stuff to it and all I can say is that they are missing a lot.

My siblings wouldn't take it if not properly washed for the bitter taste to reduce. You can also use pumpkin leaves, it's nice as well.
