My perspective on Leadership

Leadership has been a great challenge in my dear country Nigeria. I have said this time without numbers that if we would get it right in our structure of leadership then rest assured of a good society where things will thrive better. When I saw the theme for this edition, I marveled because the present predicament that has befallen my nation is quite alarming and synchronized with the current reality we have. The question says should citizens suffer for the decision of their leaders? Is this fair? Hmmmm I have so much to say and I hope the space will be enough for me to express my thoughts in this regard.

In my journey of life, I have come to realize that leadership is a focal thing that can't be taken for granted. It begins from home and could end anywhere. Leaders can build and also they can destroy individuals or society at large. Do you know we would have been better and advanced than where we are? My country is gradually decaying and shifting from the current reality which is getting the right leadership style. There have been many principles and theories about leadership but implementing it to fruition has always been a challenge. I have seen the curriculum of the school changed and restructured to fit in novel things but yet it hasn't yielded the required results that is needed.

True leadership that would consider the well being of its citizens as a major priority is very scarce in the present world. What we see today is the leadership of selfishness and game of blame amongst many so-called leaders whereas others focused on the money they have accumulated so that they can infringe the citizens rights and privileges.

True leadership is supposed to be the one that includes all social strata in the society. Genuine leadership considers the citizens more than everything else but the reverse is the case in the present world. Citizens aren't supposed to suffer the consequences of the decision of their leaders. In a situation where the followers suffer the resultant effects of their leaders, it would present a good and balanced society. As a true leader, you have to be very careful in making decisions. Don't be tasty and don't be quiet. You need to be wise and diplomatic in handling issues. Most of the time what results in a bad decision made by leaders towards their followers is the selfish desire that filled our hearts.

In my dear country now, citizens are really suffering from the issue of security. It appears as if only the elite and those with financial muscles enjoy certain benefits of having a security aide while common keeps struggling and suffering from kidnapping etc. Why most leaders fail and boomerang on the citizens can simply be summarized in three folds....

  1. Where there is no vision definitely people will perish and suffer a lot. As a leader try and define your vision and pursuit in black and white so that the followers will have a concrete direction of what you are pursuing.

  2. There should be an alignment between your vision and what to achieve. Most leaders find it difficult to make their followers align or synchronize with the visions even though most leaders focus on achievements not minding what it would take to actualize the visions.

  3. The third thing is achievement.

Citizens shouldn't suffer but are supposed to enjoy the dividend of good leadership.

Thanks for reading through.
